Jams aplenty
First of all, I want to thank all the readers for paying attention to this blog and to those who wrote comments in the previous post for their support. It’s good to see so much people caring about what I do. I even enjoyed the comments from the haters!
Let’s go to basketball… Well, it’s been a nice ride for me since the last time I blogged here. I’m probably playing my best basketball right now and the team has been doing pretty well too. We won like eight or nine games in a row before we lost to Panathinaikos, who is the best team in Europe. At halftime, I thought we had a chance to beat them, but it was not to be. Anyway, I had a good game so at least I was happy with that.
Right now I’m feeling way more comfortable playing. People here were telling me it would take me more than a month to get used to the type of basketball that’s played over here and I guess they were right. It’s like I’m finding my niche – being active, rebounding and shooting well… One of the toughest things is adjusting to the new rules. Travelling… Aww. Refs here call traveling a lot. Sometimes you take the first step on the fast break thinking it’s going to be an easy basket and then you hear the whistle! Well, I guess I will have to adjust to that.
Another difference? Fans. They are just incredible. They come early and cheer the whole game no matter who we are facing. I played in San Antonio last season, you know. And no disrespect to people there (they are very loyal and all that), but Spurs fans are so used to winning that they are a little bit spoiled. They sit, watch and cheer sometimes. Here is a whole different story. There’s just much, much more passion.
Life off the court hasn’t changed much for me. I don’t go to a lot of places and it has a lot to do with the area of the city in which I live. I’m in the Asian part of Istanbul and most of the places to go are in the European side. That’s a big issue since the traffic here is absolutely crazy. If you want to go to the hot spots, you have to cross the bridge. And if you get unlucky you can get stuck in a traffic jam there for three hours. I’m not feeling that!
One last thing: You’d never imagine how much you miss American TV living abroad.
Talk to you guys later this month. Keep those comments coming.
Bye.

man I know you are having the time of your life. There are some fine women over there and you can have fun playing basketball. I would definetly cross that bridge and hit those hot spots cuzzo! I used to kick it wit Blue Edwards, David Vaughn and other hoopers at the Greek hip-hop spots. It goes down in a major way! As long as your team is paying you on time! Enjoy your experience my dude, once in a lifetime.

Hi James,
Glad you’re doing okay. You just have to deal with the hand that has been given to you. This will only make you a better player, and is probably better than being on some team now and hardly getting any minutes. You seem to be upbeat in your blogs, keep it up like that man.

Hey man, keep your chin up and make the best of this situation and just try to enjoy the culture and new experiences you encounter living somewhere like Turkey. While I’m sure you’d rather be playing in the NBA you can use this opportunity to practice and bring your skills and your fundamentals to a new level. You have a great amount of talent and natural ability and if you want to get back to the NBA then its entirely in your hands. Don’t really know much about Euroleague but hey go Fenerbahce. As a student of the game, players like yourself, Dee Brown, Jamario Moon, Ronny Turiaf, Tanoka Beard (shout out) etc. are the players I love to watch aside from the superstars. A lot of people are blinded to the fact that you a PRO. They believe that because you not in the league, you’re game ain’t nice, you’re sorry, or whatever. But those are the same haters who spend all kinds of money to watch you guys night in and night out. It’s not their fault though….The average person doesn’t understand the grind and what it takes to play in NBA or pro ball period. It’s hard to make it in the D-league, overseas or the CBA even. the fact that you hoopin’ and gettin paid for it is admirable and says SOMETHIN about you all. At the end of the day whether it in be in the NBA or wherever, you’ll be in A league! Keep doin’ what you doin’; there are people out there who appreciate and understand what you guys bring to the table. Keep grindin’.—-TYSON

If you plan on staying long term in Europe I would recommend you to change the country sooner than later. Why?
For example, if you would play in Spain for just 3 or 4 years and be willing to continuously invest time to learn the language you would be able to speak it fluently sooner than you think… and you know everybody has to think about the time after basketball at some point. Speaking the language will make life more comfortable…
Turkisch is way too hard to learn. But French, Italian, German and Spanish are languages that are very similar to English in Grammar and Vocabulary and therefore not that difficult to learn.
Think about it.

It should tell you something, when everyone talks about you dunking and not acknowledging your overall game. You are a dunker and you always have been. Your game may improve in other areas but then again maybe it won’t. In any event, your are doing what you love to do and the NBA isn’t the only place that you can make money. Remember that!!!! Just like I said on the last blog, you know we keep it real in DC. Work on your entire game. Forget about the dunking, everyone knows that you can do that with the best of them. You are one of the best dunkers to ever dunk a basketball but not is not going to get you paid. Remember, we got your back (Barry Farms) DC stand up!!!

I hope you are taking this time to improve your game and become a much better player. I think you have amazing potential to be a definite impact player in the NBA so keep working at it. Try and experience the culture in Istanbul as much as you can even if it is a little daunting. You never know what you can learn/experience. I wanted the Mavs to get you ever since you came out of college. When the Pacers traded those three 2nd rounders for you I got upset, and then I was really upset whenever you signed with the Spurs, my least favorite team. Next summer call up the Mavs, look at JJ Barea and Marquis Daniels as guys who made it somewhat big from not being very well known guys.
Best of luck!

Man, enjoy your time in Europe. As someone said, this is your only chance to really feel the life in here. I know you miss the TV and all those american thing (I did it only after a year spent in the States), but give it time and you’ll see that Europe is way cooler than the US. Now, you are going to prove yourself (we know you have the talent) and go back to the NBA, so you should look forward for this Euro adventure to end soon.
And, yes, your team is good, so try to take advantage of that too. Fans in the city would never forget your effort!
And finally… I see that clubs in here are paying more and more money to players. Players like Ilyasova, Jackson, Jaskevicius chose to play in Europe instead of the NBA, and I suspect they get payed a lot of money. Just make sure not to play REALLY good here. Someone may offer you big €s :). And the curency iz strong, so for you being an American payed in €s, it must make a difference :).. and when you think about it, many great american players stayed here for good (Langdon, Penn, etc.), so, who knows, maybe the greatest dunker of all time will be an european one day ;-).
Take care!

Remember, you have more “talent” than 80-90% of the NBA players now. If you keeping working on your game, there is no reason why you shouldnt be balling in the NBA.

I just want to say that you really should have a spot on a team this year, with your slashing ability and athletism, cant believe that someone didnt pick you up after being released.
My best advice is to get out there and eat as many Kebabs and stuff as you can, work the hell out and fill out your frame man, need some muscle bulk…………that and keeping on keeping on will get you back in the league for sure.
Take care bud,
James

I saw the game against Rome and i think that in 2 half you’ve played 5 minutes, he prefered to play with the fat guy with the red beard, anyway you had a great win

Dear James,
I’m the kid who met you on the turkish airlines flight going back to istanbul earlier this month. I just wanted to ask how you got drafted in to the NBA and how you ended up in Europe. If its ok, could you send me an e-mail, if it is not too much work for you. I understand if it’s too much with all the traveling…

Hey James,
Just wanted to wish you the best of luck, and hope to see you back here in the NBA. I can still see you wearing the sombrero on stage at the Spurs championship celebration last June. Keep your chin up and remember no one ever said it would be easy. Just ask Bruce Bowen. Anyway if you ever get down remember you have one championship ring more than John Stockton, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley combined. Take care. God bless.

James, we miss ya in Cincy. We enjoyed the pre-game video on the center court screen when you were here. My friend and I always got a kick out of watching you do the “shimmy” after that one dunk. It was played at the end of the highlight video.
Needless to say the video highlights are fewer and farther between these days, but brighter days are ahead. Best of luck your with current team and keep that smile on your face.

James, I sure hope to see you back in the NBA. You have 1st Round talent, that’s for sure. Also, had you been in the Dunk Content in 2007, there is no doubt in my mind you would have won. I guess the NBA kept you out of it just to give the other dunkers a fair shot. I seriously believe that if the NBA is going to keep up the stupid 4 man dunk format (it should be the top 6 dunkers in the league, regardless of experience) it should be you, Vince Carter, Kobe, and (because LeBron refuses to enter) Tracy McGrady.
It’s been many years but I still can’t get over how you lost to David Lee in the McDonald’s All-American Dunk Contest. I never get tired of watching that. I hated David Lee for a long time for not doing the right thing and giving you the trophy you so rightfully deserved. It’s a shame the Spurs (my favorite NBA team) decided not to groom you as Bruce Bowen’s successor. As great a team as they are, they lack athletic wings and yet they cut YOU. Doesn’t make too much sense.
Keep playing hard, and remember to have fun while playing. The more fun you have, the more you win. Take care James, looking forward to your next blog.

James,
I’ll never forget watching you at Cincinatti, and how amazed I was at your athletic ability. Please work as hard as you can in Europe, because you have the gift of being one of the most gifted athletes on this planet! I NEED TO SEE YOU IN THE NBA at the Sprite All Star Dunk Contest, to show the world how freakish those hops are. Oh and another thing….please don’t go back to the Spurs, they are the most boring team in the league and for someone as explosive as you, come to LA BABY!! Keep workin’ hard!

James the Flight White….mmmm what can I say. You suck! seriously dude you have so many hops that ppl would kill for. What the hell are you doing. Your massive winner of the genetic lottery and you havent developed a decent dribble or jumpshot. Either start puttin in the work or fade away in obscurity. Noone cares if your playing in Europe. You should be embarassed to be playing there. Your 25 now & dont deserve sympathy. Either put up or shutup. I agree without previous post. Your nothing but a dunker. A damn good one but in 10 years you will remembered as nothing but a dissapointment rather than the guy that dunked between his legs fro the free throw line. Cant believe you got a ring when guys like Karl Malone, Charles Barkley have not. Wheres the justice. You didnt contribute at all & should be ashamed to recieve it. hey im pretty harsh here but prove me wrong

Man, I was a fan of yours ever since the McDonalds High School dunk contest when you got robbed by David Lee. Reverse affirmative action right? but then Candace Parker and Nate Robinson win dunk contests, so what does it really mean?
Have you played NBA 2k8? I pick you up as a free agent because the game got it right. Youre like Kobe, getting to the basket and hitting the 3 pt shot.
Kick ass in Europe and I hope you make it back to playing in the NBA soon.
Whatever it takes.

What up James,
I played with you a couple times back in the day at the courts on Amity in Gaithersburg. Good to see your still ballin. Everytime i see a dunk contest durring All-Star weekend I tell everybody that I’ve seen someone who can do a whole dunk contest from the free throw line! I know you’ll get back to the NBA soon. Just keep working on your game. I grew up with Isaiah (Swann). I know you heard about him blowing out his knee a few weeks ago. Call and encourage him if you haven’t already. Stay up!

Glad to hear you are still balling. I had you pegged as the next big thing back in the day, you are still young enough to prove me right. Good luck overseas. If you perform right and keep it professional things will work out. You still have the best dunk I’ve seen, the two-hander from the free-throw line. Although VC over Weiss and that And 1 guy doing a 720 are close behind! Peace bro. One.

Also as a major streetball fan Ball4real / And1 I always would have thought you would be flying as 1 of the finishers with those guys, its gotta be close to the money you get in the Club leagues as well as you would be back in the states and you could prolly do it just for fun in your offseason any chance?
