Turkish adventure

James White - Icon Sports MediaHi guys. This is James White blogging now for HoopsHype.com. I’ll do it a couple of times per month while I’m playing in Turkey for Fenerbahce Ulker. Hope you enjoy reading me.

Some of you will remind me for my college career in Cincinnati and my stints in the NBA last season with the Pacers and the Spurs. I was released by San Antonio in July and chose to come overseas to make a living playing basketball here. It’s not the best possible situation because my dream always was playing in the NBA, but it’s still basketball and I’m going to do my thing for a Euroleague club. So you could say it’s kind of like the second best situation, right?

I’ve been here in Istanbul only for a few weeks so I’m still getting used to the place. The good thing is I have Willie Solomon (who played with the Grizzlies a few years back) on the team. Willie has been around longer so he tells me where to eat, where to get stuff and is very helpful when the language barrier becomes an issue with the other members of the team and the coaches.

Can’t say I’m doing much outside of practicing with the team. You get home, watch movies, talk to people back home… And that’s pretty much it. At least for now.

In case you were wondering, yeah, I received my championship ring. Well, in fact my girl received it. It’s a good thing to have and it was a very cool experience going through the playoffs with the Spurs even though I didn’t play at all. Just living in that atmosphere, watching how the veterans were able to handle all types of different situations… It was great. You learn a lot just being around. No matter how tough it was when they cut me, I’m going to keep good memories from my time there.

Will be back in a couple of weeks. Peace!

Man just wanna say that I thought you could’ve jumped to the pros out of highschool, but it was refreshing to see that some one with the amount of talent you have went to college. Just wanted to know are you gonna try and go back to the NBA next year or are you gonna play in Turkey for a few years.

    thanks

    Hey James,

I remember watching your first game, I think it was against the Warriors, but anyways, I hope you are doing well. I don’t get any channels to watch the Euroleage or Turkish League, but I am sure you are doing well. I checked out Fenerbahce’s website, and saw pictures of your singing ceremony. Just stick it out, I am sure it is tough to be living in a foreign country, but just hang in there and I am sure you will do fine. And I hope you get your goal back in life, and play in the NBA once again.

    Anyways Take Care,

    Hi James,

My name is Nathan Redd and I’m a grad student at your old rival - the University of Louisville. I’m also a big Fenerbahce fan and no, I’m not Turkish. I just wanted to say congrats on signing with Fener Ulker and I wanted to let you know that I have been following your career. Also, I currently have a website that covers Fenerbahce in English. It’s http://www.fenerbahceworldwide.blogspot.com. Right now it covers mostly the soccer side of Fenerbahce, but I’m launching a new website around Christmas that will also have news on you, Fener basketball, etc. in English. That will be http://www.fenerbahceworldwide.org. Feel free to contact me if you ever need anything. I’m planning to move to Istanbul soon and I speak a little Turkish. I know it can be quite an adjustment moving to Turkiye, so let me know if you need any help finding things or just getting around. Best of luck with everything!

    hey james,
i think you’ll enjoy your time in turkey; especially istanbul. theres alot to absorb and things to bring into perspective about life and i’m sure that will affect you in a good way on the basketball court. i’m a US student thats spending a semester here, so in a way we’re similar; i’m going to return home soon and i’m assuming that you intend to get back in the nba.
I hope your time in istanbul is useful not just in terms of the game but in other life aspects that’ll give you good opportunities for the future.

    hoşçakal!

Great Blog! I was sad to see the Spurs cut you. I’ve followed your career since I was in junior high(now I’m a college grad student). They should have put you in the Dunk Contest, that would have been fun to watch. Hopefully your career in Europe goes well, and maybe someday your back in the NBA ala Anthony Parker.

    Hey James,

I first saw you on a basketball mixtape video hosted by Jermaine Dupri about 7-8 years ago. You appeared to be competing in a high school dunk contest.
That was the first time I saw anyone take off from the foul line and complete a two-handed dunk.
Afterward you said that ‘Vince Carter could probably beat you in a dunk contest, but you could ‘give him some go.’

Been following your career ever since.

Glad to see you are getting some shine and refining your skills overseas, and I’m sure you’ll be back in the league soon.

Keep up the hard work and good luck to you.

    James,

Man, I never thought I’d see you in this situation. I’ve followed you since HS. I remember the two hand dunk from the free throw line in the Mcdonalds game. I thought you would wind up being a goto man on the floor.

It always gets to me how and NBA team will draft a player to a team of veteran(like Spurs) and work with that guy in practice(because playing time is so valuable and they want this young guy to be at the top of his game before he plays) but then once he’s developed they trade/release him away without giving him an opportunity.

Almost as the Pistons did with Darko Milicic. We have come to find out that he’s soft but when he was drafted by Detroit, ahead of Melo sadly, Detroit raved about how good he was. Then he never played, they said he was developing and adapting to American culture. Then they said he’s gain like 10+ lbs. Then he still never played, next thing you know they traded him to Orlando. They never gave him the chance to prove himself or an opportunity. Like I said after being traded to Orlando we realized he wasn’t that good, but Detroit didn’t know that when they traded him. I think it’s similar to your situation, you were never given a fair shot at proving yourself in the league, if you did I’m sure there be some posters out there of you dunking on people and that’d be all the publicity you need. Almost like a young Amare Stoudemire, nobody had heard about him until he dunked on a few Vets…Grant Hill, Yao Ming, Ron Artest…the list goes on. More recently Monte Ellis, he had a few ‘big’ dunks, the one I remember mostly was when he dunked on Boris Diaw. It was all over ESPN he got his publicity, his confidence went up and now he’s contributing. I think you would have been very similar if given the chance. Good luck man, I look forward to watching you in the league again sometime in the near future.

    November 18, 2007 @ 12:23 pm

    Yo James,

Seeing you making the best of whatever situation you are in is just great. By thinking positively you’ve already taken a huge step toward success. That being said, I believe you are definitely more appreciative and thankful for the talent that you have than most players in the league. It is a rare trait in the NBA, and with your potential, hard work, and of course, the tremendous talent, there is not a doubt in my mind that you will succeed in pursuing your dream again. It is only a matter of time, and your patience and hardwork will eventually pay off.

    Good luck with everything!

    Hey James,

I’m a huge fan of yours, and was sad to see you let go by the Spurs. I’m also a huge Spurs fan. Your talents belong in the NBA. Keep working on your game and show everyone that you can make a jump shot. We all know about your athleticism, so use it to your advantage. You’re still young, so as long as you step up and play the game like we know you can, you will be hearing from some teams sometime soon. You’ll definitely be back in the NBA, just work as hard as you can, show people what you can do, have a good time, and we’ll see you back in the states soon. Take it easy!

    Hey James,

I live in Japan and it’s funny, other day I was talking to my buddy about the NBA. I’m saying “Yeah man, Lebron, Chris Paul, they gonna have HUGE years.” But then my buddys like, ‘Who is James White playing for??? The Spurs???” And I’m like “WHO!?? Ohh Ummm yeah, maybe the Spurs.” I pretended I knew who he was talkin’ bout. Japanese people don’t know much about the NBA so I was surprised he knew someone I didn’t know. And he kept mentioning “James White” for like 3 straight weeks

So man, came home thinking maybe he mis-pronounced the name or somethin’, did some YOUTUBE searching, and D-D-Damnn!!!

Hope you make all the fools like me know your name in the end.

    James,

i have been watching you play since high school. Unlike alot of people, I am going to be honest with you. Your game is made to play abroad. The guy that said you could have gone straight to the pro’s from high school was lying to you. Your game has gotten some what better since high school but not that much. You still need to find a jump shot, work on your handle and get a little bigger. You also, need to improve your basketball IQ. I think that you are an amazing athlete and with the proper training could have made millions and won medals in the long/triple jump. The good thing is the NBA has a lost alot of its luster (actual players that can play at a high level consistently)from yesteryear so with some committment to your game, you can get into the league. We (DC) love to see our guys in the league and we are pulling for you. If you never make it back to the NBA don’t worry, because you can still make millions abroad. Stay strong and positive and I will see you this summer down the FARMS!! You know how we do back home, keep it real and keep it moving!!

I was a freshman at Florida the year that you went there and it was always disappointing to me that I never got to see you play. Ever since the McDonalds game I was hyped to see you and D. Lee suiting up for the Gators. With you on that team the Gators would have won three championships instead of two. Now that you have your own blog could you take a minute to talk about your decision to transfer? Did watching the 04’s lead them to those championships ever make you wish you’d stayed? Anyways glad you succeeded at Cincinnati and you will soon be back in the league. Peace

Hey man! I saw you recently on spanish TV (Euroleague), I think you guys played Madrid. Honestly you did not look good, pretty much lost. From what I saw your problem right now seems to be your confidence. Your jumper is fine. You have been shooting jumpers all your life. as long as you do not shot to flat it looks perfect.

Read “The mental edge” by Kenneth Baum that will fix your jump shut, confidence and your game. Good luck!

  30. Omer, Tel-Aviv Said,

    November 19, 2007 @ 12:57 pm

Dude, don’t let nobody give you a hard time for that dunk contest - it was the BEST DUNK CONTEST FINALS EVER!!!
David Lee only won because he was more imaginative, but your dunks… man, that foul-liner was probably a top 10 all-time & all-players.
Besides, he’s kicking ass today so it’s not like you were beaten by a nobody.

And cheer-up for your career in Turkey. Being intimately familliar with both NBA and European B-ball, I can tell you that the Turkish fans (along with the Greeks) are the wildest and most devoted B-ball fans in the world, and I really think that you will love getting the support and recognition you were missing in your NBA games.

Good luck man! (except for when you’re playing Maccabi Tel-Aviv ;-))

Getting that championship ring is huge. Lots of players never get one. Hope you do well there AND remember it only takes 1 game against the right competition with the right people watching to get you back in the league. Play hard and stay well. 38. The Don Said,

    November 20, 2007 @ 10:31 pm

    James “Flight” White:

I remember Tedy Dupay throwing you full-court-alley-hoops passes in the Southwest Rec Center at UF, watching you dunk over and over again for about 20 of us, including Ray Ray, who called one the “Chest Dunk” (you dunked the ball with your chest).

I remember watching you and Orien Greene looking like Michael and Scottie. Slick Billy Donovan should have given you guys an opportunity. I think both of you made the correct decision leaving Florida. Both of you proved Billy wrong. Both of you made the NBA. You too must admit, Orien was also incredible.

I think you are a world-class athlete, easily among the most athletic in the NBA. Having watched you played over your college career, and having played full court with you at least 20 times, I’ve always compared you to Richard Jefferson. I think your games are similar. Draq and Fish used to say your game was like McGrady’s.

There is probably not a single individual who can pull off your foul line dunks. While Jordan’s foul-line is awesome, you jumped higher, and put the ball through your leg! That’s nuts. David Less did not beat you. His dunks were average. And, you should have jammed the freaking ball in the college dunk contest. Regardless, my point is your athleticism is second to none in the world.

    Congrats.

I have no doubt you can excel in the NBA. The two most important attributes of an NBA player is running fast and jumping high. They don’t call you “Flight” for nothing.

The greatest thing that ever happened to Udonis Haslem was France.

James, you have way more than what it takes to succeed at the highest level of competition. Continue to work hard. Good things come to those who wait.

I wish you nothing but success, and I look forward to watching you dazzle, show out, and fly in the NBA.

    The Don

    James,

I believe in you like so many other people do. If you work hard stay off drugs, booze, etc; you will definitely make back to the N.B.A. James, write down your goal of returning to the N.B.A. on a piece of paper. If you don’t write it down on a piece of paper it would just be a fantasy, dream, or a wish without any energy behind it. After you do that take action. One step at a time. Focus, concentrate, pay attention in detail to your goal. If you want to know your past look into your present condition … If you want to know your future look into your present actions.

P.S. Work hard on your defense, dribbling, shooting and all aspects of your game.
You work hard: I will be seeing you in N.J. next year. You will play for the Nets.

God be with you and your family. May all your dreams and wishes come to fruition.

    Hi, James

As the name implies, I first became familiar with you professionally when you were drafted by the Pacers. Know that several Pacers fans were disappointed when you were released. You’ve got skills. That’s undeniable. However, if I could offer my advice it would be that: 1) you mature alittle while overseas; and, 2) you improve your defensive skills. From reports, these were the two primary reasons you were released from both NBA teams (Pacers and Spurs) though the numbers game did play a part. Still, if you can improve in the areas identified above, I have no doubt you’ll return to the NBA in short order.

Good Luck to you. I wish you well.

Even though you didn’t play that much you were my favorite Spur last year, and I don’t know if you remember me, but I am Philly Billy’s son Karl, and I talked to you after your first game. I really wanted the Spurs to keep you, but when they didn’t, I at least wanted you to be picked up by another team, but hey I’m sure one day you’ll be back in the NBA, just keep up that D and before you know it you’ll be in the NBA again. i’ll also be sure to keep an eye out on youtube for some new stuff, and read your blogs.

Whats up James. My name is Oktay, I’m a first generation Turkish-American from Jersey and I’ve watched you play for the ‘Natti. Just wanted to let you know that even though the NBA is not in the picture right now, keep working on ya game and good things will happen. The Turkish league is a competitve league and gets the recognition it deserves in the Euro scene. Take Marcus Slaughter for example. He played for Besiktas not too long ago and got called back to the NBA by the Miami Heat (plus ya games tighter than his). And also I got nothing but love for you because your playing for a Turkish club in EuroLeague. Keep representing and doing your thing.

PS: If any Turkish teammates or fans are bugging, tell them “Def-ol” Pretty much means “Get the steppin”…. pc

Congrats on the ring. Even though you didn’t have a part in getting it, it’s still a tremendous honor to be part of a championship team.

The Spurs are the most disciplined team in the league so you shouldn’t feel discouraged about them waiving you. I don’t think your game is suited to their slow tempo either. Just look at your former teammate Beno Udrih, he got traded for a second round pick. Now he’s starting for the Kings and averaging 15 and 4 on 47 FG%. Goes to show you that what’s not good enough for the Spurs, can be very good for other teams.

Good luck in Turkey. You’re fortunate to have Willie Solomon as your host. I hope to see you in the NBA again. Work on your game instead of watching movies :D !!!

I’m sure your following the team over their, but its been a rough couple years, and will be next year I suspect as well. I have faith in Mick though, he’s got some serious talent coming in, it just takes time. Just keep doin’ your thing man and I’m sure you’ll get another shot at the league. GO CATS!

We haven’t forgotten how you bailed on the Cats in the Winter Quarter of your Senior Year. Hicks deserved a better ending to his Senior year. Oh well, you were a good player and we still pull for you to get back to the Association with our other Alums.

Hey James! Thanks for transferring from Florida many years ago, which feels like yesterday. You’ve got the talent to play anywhere, but think about it, right now you’re going to get many more minutes than you did last year, plus you’re getting paid to play basketball on the bottom line, so you sir, are living the dream!

    Hey James,

Archie Talley averaged 55 points per night playing abroad. He’s from Seat Pleasant, Maryland. You don’t need four years of overseas basketball. The dream, the goal, is to showcase your God given talent in the NBA. Look at Kevin Durant, another cat from our hood. Everyone can leap in the NBA. At your height, you should be or can be performing like Lebron, Kobe, and Vince Carter. Get busy and rejoin the league. There are plenty NBA teams who could use your talent. Dribble and shoot the jumper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sup James, i’ve followed you when your posterizing people @ Newport back in the day, and its good to see you found a spot where someone appreciates your skills. I’m actually coaching over at the new Neport School in Silver Spring. It’s extremely small right now, but hopefully in time I can restore it to its glory. Hope all is well. Keep doin what you do. later.

I look forward to watching you prove all the haters wrong. You can’t teach athleticsm, and you were blessed with plenty of that. I think you should come back this summer and work with a personal trainer/coach. Jordan used to swear by his trainer Tim Grover (Hoops Gym) in Chicago. I know Grover trains a lot of NBA players…I’d love to see you catch on next year.

    Best of Luck

James the Flight White….mmmm what can I say. You suck! seriously dude you have so many hops that ppl would kill for. What the hell are you doing. Your massive winner of the genetic lottery and you havent developed a decent dribble or jumpshot. Either start puttin in the work or fade away in obscurity. Noone cares if your playing in Europe. You should be embarassed to be playing there. Your 25 now & dont deserve sympathy. Either put up or shutup. I agree without previous post. Your nothing but a dunker. A damn good one but in 10 years you will remembered as nothing but a dissapointment rather than the guy that dunked between his legs fro the free throw line. Cant believe you got a ring when guys like Karl Malone, Charles Barkley have not. Wheres the justice. You didnt contribute at all & should be ashamed to recieve it. hey im pretty harsh here but prove me wrong
