Martin-Cuban feud continues
There’s a new Cuban Missile Crisis. It has to do with the shots that continue to be launched between Dallas owner Mark Cuban and Denver forward Kenyon Martin.
A movie was made on the 1962 crisis called “Thirteen Days.’’ The way this one is going, it might last a lot longer.
“He’s a coward,’’ Martin said Saturday about Cuban, a week after Cuban made an unflattering comment to Martin’s mother during a West semifinal series, with Martin believing Cuban has yet to apologize in an appropriate manner.
Meanwhile, Cuban admits he “made a mistake’’ in having apologized to Martin’s mother on his blog and not having yet done so personally in a timely fashion. But Cuban, in an e-mail to HoopsHype.com, wrote he wants Martin to take responsibility for his actions, which he wrote included calling a wife of a Mavericks staff member a “(expletive) fat pig’’ and making an obscene gesture.
It all heated up May 9 after Game 3. After the Nuggets won a controversial game in Dallas, when the NBA later admitted a foul should have been called on Mavericks guard Antoine Wright and a game-winning three-pointer from Denver forward Carmelo Anthony wiped out, Cuban was incensed. He passed by Martin’s mother, Lydia Moore, and has admitted saying “that includes your son’’ when a fan called Nuggets players thugs.
Martin had been fined $25,000 by the NBA and assessed a flagrant foul 1 for a Game 1 incident in which he knocked Mavericks star forward Dirk Nowitzki hard to the floor.
Following last Monday’s Game 4 in Dallas, the Mavericks’ only win in a 4-1 series loss, it has been reported Martin launched profanity in the direction of Cuban. Then, a few hours after that game, Cuban did get around to apologizing to Martin’s mother, doing it on his blog.
But that hasn’t sat well with Martin. Even though NBA commissioner David Stern has recommended Cuban apologize in a more direct manner, Martin said as of Saturday afternoon he knew of no additional apology having been made.
“He’s a coward,’’ Martin said about Cuban. “He couldn’t face it… You all read the only apology that he’s made (on his blog)… The world got to see it before the person who it was meant for got to see it. That tells you how that goes. I ain’t never known nobody apology to somebody through other people.’’
Martin on Saturday was asked by HoopsHype.com about his actions following Game 4. But Martin declined to discuss them.
Cuban then was asked by e-mail about Martin’s comments on Saturday about him, and was informed about Martin not wanting to comment about what happened after Game 4.
First, Cuban wrote he erred in how he has handled the apology to Moore.
“I still intend to apologize to Ms. Moore,’’ Cuban wrote. “I made a mistake and will keep my commitment.’’
Later, Cuban wrote he believes Martin needs to address his actions.
“I would also like to know if Kenyon is going to take responsibility for his actions rather than hiding behind ‘no comment,’’’ Cuban wrote. “Will he apologize to the wife of our staff member that he called a ‘(expletive) fat pig’ immediately after Game 3? Will he apologize to fans that he threatened to, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘(expletive) beat the (expletive) down’ during Game 4?
“Or to the fans he walked by after Game 4, (Martin) cursed and gave the finger to? Will he take responsibility for what he said and did? Is there some reason he has not?’’
Martin, though, has been willing to talk about Cuban. He said Saturday that, while he’s disappointed in how Cuban’s apology was handled, he’s trying to move past that.
“I don’t care,’’ said Martin, who said he was distracted and didn’t play his best in Game 4 because he said fans at American Airlines were “bothering’’ his mother as she sat directly behind the Nuggets bench. “Me and my mom ain’t going to lose no sleep if we don’t talk to Mark Cuban. We’re going to lay our head down and sleep well every night.
“I’m still playing right now. (Cuban’s) got time to think about all that. I got games to win right now. So give (Cuban) time to think about (what he might do).’’
One thing is for sure. When the NBA schedule comes out in August, circle the games between the Nuggets and Mavericks.
The first big blow in the series came courtesy of Martin. With the Mavericks having taken a 12-9 lead midway through the first quarter in Game 1 and Nowitzki shooting 5-of-5, the burly forward plowed into Nowitzki on the baseline, sending him sprawling.
Martin was assessed a technical foul. However the following day NBA changed the call to a flagrant foul 1 and fined Martin $25,000 while rescinding the technical.
“I think it set the tone (for the series) for sure,’’ said Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups. “Nowitzki had hit four or five shots in a row earlier in that game to start off the series, and think (Martin) took it a little personally and let him know, ‘OK, this is how it’s going to be. Yeah, you probably will play good because you’re a great player. But it’s not going to be easy. This is how it’s going to be.’’’
The Nuggets showed early they would be by far the more aggressive team in the series. While those in the NBA office did not look kindly at Martin’s maneuver, there was a belief by some in the Nuggets camp it was a well-spent $25,000.
“That wasn’t what I was trying to do, but that seemed to be the attitude it took on so I had no problem with it,’’ Martin when told about Billups saying his knockdown of Nowitzki set the tone for the series. “You do what you’re supposed to do. If we keep winning the playoffs, I’ll get that money back.’’
There is a World Wrestling Entertainment event scheduled for later this month at the Pepsi Center. But watching Martin fans sometimes feel they’ve already been treated to a steel-cage match.
“I don’t back down from nobody,’’ Martin said. “There’s not a person that has laced their shoes up and stepped on this court (that Martin is) going to back down from. No matter who you are. Championships or not. MVPs or not. Sixteenth man on the team. I’m going to treat you the same way. No matter what it is. I’m going to get after you.
“You’re going to know you played against me when you get done. That’s all I strive to do. Whether you play one game against me or 20 or whatever the case might be, my name will always come up in the conversation of who’s the toughest guy you had to play against. And I want my name to be mentioned.’
It seems Martin got some of his training from Michael Jordan’s original bodyguard.
When Martin broke into the NBA in 2000, he was tough. But he was no Charles Oakley.
But Oakley, then an aging pro who had broke into the NBA in 1986 as Chicago’s head henchman during the early days of Jordan’s brilliance, was around to show the young Martin how to throw his weight around while at least sometimes staying within the rules.
“Charles Oakley, hands down,’’ Martin said about the toughest player he ever faced. “You watch what I’m doing to these young guys, that’s what Oak did to me. (Oakley showed Martin) all of that stuff, man. He told me stuff that is legal to a certain degree.’’
Martin lives on the edge. He has received his share of NBA penalties over the years, but nobody ever hears his teammates complain about him.
“His presence is always felt on the court,’’ Billups said. “It’s never what he does offensively. It’s about his presence out there, his toughness, his grit and grind. We look for that. That’s a major component of our team.’’
With Billups providing leadership and passing, Anthony scoring plenty and Martin flexing his muscles, the Nuggets have advanced to the West final for the first time since 1985.
Enjoying the ride has been Nuggets coach George Karl, who been able to channel Martin’s aggressiveness in recent years at least toward the other team. In the 2006 playoffs, Martin was suspended by the Nuggets for launching an obscenity-laced tirade at Karl over playing time.
“I think the word we’ve used here is, and we’ve added veteran to it, is a smart toughness,’’ Karl said when asked if enforcer is the right word to describe Martin. “I think he’s emotionally involved, but I think he’s smart and I think he’s veteran. I don’t think he’s afraid of pushing the line. Bruce Bowen pushed the line every playoff series I’ve ever seen him (play with San Antonio).
“(Martin) pushed the line (against Dallas). Cuban pushed the line. But it didn’t get crazy. They professionally settled down into a way that somewhere along the way it’ll get settled.’’
The way things are going, though, it could take a while for this feud to settle down.

This whole situation is bad for the NBA. I am a Mavericks fan and do love Cuban (no one can deny how he has turned around the Mavs since buying the team), however this is getting way out of hand. Cuban just needs to step it up and apologize to his momma face to face. He should have never let his frustrations get the best out of him in the first place. Martin needs to focus on the next round and be done with this-I can’t help but notice though that every time he opens his mouth the things that come out do not help him defend his stance of not being a thug…listen to this “I ain’t never known nobody apology to somebody through other people.—what does this mean? I agree that if what Cuban says is true that Martin should also apologize to the Mavs wife–Hypocracy–If Martin doesn’t have the self-control to keep from saying these things-should he really be going after Cuban…seems to me he might need to look in the mirror before pointing the finger. This all comes down to two guys who have very inflated ego’s. From a distance this all looks like Stern can’t control an owner and can’t keep this situation out of the public.

Both need to be men, and do what’s right.
Cuban, needs to be less visible/distracting…he’s hurt his team one too many times, he’s like a 2 yr old who can’t get enough attention.
Kenyon, needs to quit acting…he’s one of those “fake” tough guys. Oak, Barkley and the others were the last of their kind, the current crop of players are literally actors now.

lol giving a hard foul makes someone a thug? The way kmart talks makes hima thug? please..don’t call everyone a thug just cuz the mavs are a bunch of softies. Them and the raptors are the only teams in the leagues that don’t have “thugs” on them and they also are the softest teams…and if you all want kmart to apologize, then make every single fan that was yellin at him and cursin apologize too.Cuz unlike cuban its not like martin just randomly went after one person. He yelled back at fans that were yellin at him. The dallas fans feed off cuban, and he acts like hes at a hockey game with all his moaning and complaing and then runs home to type about it online. Like he said, who apologizes online? he should go and apologize the same way he made the first comment, face to face. People are so gay these days, its just like the kid’s dad at the magics game askin for an apology and callin big baby a crazed animal…um no…just tell your stupid son to get off the court.

Brian Boitono is right. And, I’m not just saying that because it’s an extremely rare opportunity.
seriously though, i love marc cuban, but this is the kind of incident he attracts. on the other hand, i was at the lucky 7 club after game 4 when kenyon started flipping people off and shouting some inappropriate crap. and me and the other people around had nothing to do with his little issue, we weren’t even taunting him, just looking.
at least when cuban popped off at K-Mart’s mom it’s because she was interfering in a quarrel among men.

just wanted to say, I was at both games 3 and 4 and the nuggets fans/wives/girlfriends/mothers…were asking for this. Please do not think I am trying to defend the Dallas fans cause they were just as ridiculous, but the Nuggets people were all sitting in groups throughout the lower bowl…they were being obnoxious, standing up, turning around and sort of rubbing it in to the people behind them…things like that. So…listen, if I am a relative, or close friend of an NBA player, the last thing I want to do is stand up and draw attention to myself. Let your respective team take care of the bragging rights on the court. You are only asking to be harrassed if you stand up and start showing your ass in front of a majority of people who disagree with you. Like i said, the Dallas fans should have a lot more class as well, but the line of who cast the first stone has been blurred a little in this case.

What is this “mess” about a hard foul? First off look at Martin, look at the way he plays. I understand basketball and that things can get rough. I doubt many of you the ones that defend Martin have ever played on a team before! The fact is you do not push, knock down or hit players because they are playing well. Do not get mad because you can not defend a player. This is not Hockey! You do not check players or “set the tone” as Martin says. If this was allowed in basketball then why did he get a Tech and why are Flagrant fouls called? BECAUSE this is not allowed!! Martin is a Thug and he defends by Fear! Why would a player want to drive on Martin when the possibility of Martin Knocking the player to the ground is fairly great. The point is Dirk is one of the greatest players to ever play, and the best ever for the Mavs. Dirk Makes the money to prove that too! So why drive on Martin when he may knock you to the ground and then all of the sudden Dirk Breaks his Ankle, leg? Or Sprains his knee or worse? This is called Fear Defense and there is no place for this in the NBA. I hope one day someone “sets the tone” with Martin and KNOCKS him down and maybe Martin breaks something and we will see how he feels?

I wish the Nets had Martin still maybe if they had him, no player would be able to walk right to the basket and score. Dallas fans prob can’t respect Martin because he fouled Dirk, but I can respect him. He played for the Nets and once he left Nets went down hill. Kidd was great, but not as great as when he had Martin. And game 5 when Kidd landed hard, you could tell Martin respects him still as all these years, because he was seeing if Kidd was alright, that proves he isn’t a thug.

Here is what is disappointing to me.
Mark Cuban needs to grow up imo. He is the owner of a professional basketball team and needs to act with class, dignity and respect.
Kenyon Martin needs to go to a tattoo removal parlor and get rid of all of those tattoos and maybe someone will then show him some respect. With the signage all over his body, no one listens to him.
He is a good (not great) player, but as a former No 1. overall, he is a disappointment really.

When a player has to resort to THUG tactics there are two reasons; #1 he can’t compete with the likes of LeBron James, Koby Bryant, Dwight Howard, etc., etc., and #2 being a thug is the only way he’ll get attention. Cuban has a point that Martin is a thug, as evidenced by Martin’s profanity and threats, not to mention the sometimes questionable court play by Martin such as the flagrant on Nowitzky.
Cuban is emotional and let his emotions get the better of him after the bad call in Game 3. He should not have said anything to Martin’s mom. But I think he has done all he can to try to apologize personally.

i have no idea where or when they met. LaLa is NOT an stripper, exotic dancer or whatever from what i know. she was the lady that carmelo got into an ‘altercation’ in NY over after some people/fans/whoever got aggressive/spat at her or something.

I think its pretty funny what is happening here.
-Kenyon Martin attempts to bully dirk on the basketball court with his physical (make-up-for-lack-of-skill) on court play.
-Kenyon collects paychecks off being an athletic, skill-lacking, physical player. The closest thing to an “enforcer” in basketball.
-Kenyon has lips/whatever else tattood on his neck, creating a perception in the minds of fans that he is tuff. Often times tattoos, especially ones in places as abstract and job-preventing as the “neck” will trend towards people associating you/your look with other people who have abstract/job-preventing tattoos. ie; hells angles, ex-cons and THUGS..
-Kenyon’s girl self promotes herself as “bad bitch” and titles her album “thuglife.” Does songs with Trick Daddy whose singnature song also claims, “baby, cuz I’m a thug.”
-Kenyon’s sister/family takes it personally that he is called a “thug” on dallas’ sports radio.
-Carmello Anthony is remembered for having a cameo in such thug life movies as “STOP SNITCHIN.”
-Carmello Anthony is suspended from the league for fighting. (don’t forget it was a drive-by-and-run style punch)
-Carmellos girl, lala, who is an ex-hip-hop VJ, already has associations to gangsta rap iconism.
-Lala flicks red drink on mavs fans at game 4 and is ejected.
-Lala tries to spin the ejection scene onto the mavs fans by claiming “racism” and generalizing the whole city of dallas.
-In game 3 the Mavs get a bad call and are upset, emotional and possibly still resonating some anger/pain from the 06′ finals when a couple calls by the nba turned a game or two.
-Kenyon, who was not even in the situation with the mavs vs. the refs, decides to get himself into it with Josh Howard and the Mavs team at the end of game 3. It wasn’t his battle but he still wanted to fight it.
-Kenyon leaves game 4 with alot to say to mavs fans and alot to say about Mark Cuban.
-Kenyon is now attempting to bully Mark Cuban into another apology.
-Mark Cuban doesn’t owe Kenyon or Kenyons mom an apology. He simply didn’t say anything that is not atleast true in the court of public opinion and his words should not be taken personally as you can see much of Kenyons lifestyle is “thug life” already.
-Mark Cuban was WRONG to pull Kenyons mom into this and that is the only area where Mark can be held accountable. He offended Kenyons mom when he should have offended Kenyon.
-Mark doesn’t HAVE TO apologize to anybody.
-A man would have already dropped the subject.
-A bully would just keep on bullying
Now what is all this drama about?

Has there ever been a player like Martin who came into the league and never changed. He was the exact same player a Cinn. A little less athletic but he really has the same exact moves that he had at 18 years old.
LaLa - Is that short for something?
It is a stipper name and no doubt she will be hiring a LaLawyer when it’s time to take half of Melo’s Lamoney.
Martin is Latarded.
