Players getting in the game

I’m afraid I’m the guy who defined athletes’ political activism through the words of Michael Jordan.

It was some 20 or so years ago when I was the beat writer covering the Chicago Bulls before their championship run. One of the great charms of Jordan as the guy’s guy he really most is – and I always felt perhaps the biggest reason for his amazing success – was his constant, almost relentless pursuit to make everything a contest, including conversation.

There’s rarely been anyone better at getting the last word, and making it a good one.  Jordan wanted to win the conversations, too.

Politics never has been a big priority with professional athletes, and particularly not among team athletes.

There have always been exceptions, like Bill Walton, who was something of campus activist while at UCLA. Walton once even went to deliver a letter to Richard Nixon asking him to resign. And there was Roosevelt Grier, the former NFL lineman, who was at Robert Kennedy’s side when he was assassinated. Barack Obama has drawn comparisons to the Kennedys and Bobby had several athletes with him at times, including Lamar Lundy and Deacon Jones from the NFL.

But mostly athletes, if they took sides, were Republicans based on their exceptional earnings and desire to keep corporate tax rates lower – something generally associated with the GOP. You could hold the Republican national convention in the locker room at a PGA golf tournament and have trouble finding anyone as liberal as John McCain.

In the late 80s, one of the senators from North Carolina, Jordan’s home state, was Jesse Helms, in my opinion a very bad man and whom I believed to, let’s say, have racial views that didn’t seem egalitarian. Jordan loved to debate, no matter the topic, and even on issues you would never hear him discuss, he’d have strong opinions. So I was making my case for Harvey Gantt, the black mayor of Charlotte. I said Jordan should be working for him

Jordan knew him and liked him, and his politics, which Jordan didn’t discuss often, skewed much more toward Gantt.

But there was this restraint holding him back, one that is regularly counseled to the greatest of the athletes, meaning the ones who are the most marketable: Don’t offend anyone.

And Jordan truly was the first in that field.

Sure, big-name athletes always have endorsed products. Wheaties boxes have features athletes for decades. I would buy anything I could that had Mickey Mantle’s picture on it.

But in his groundbreaking shoe deal with Nike, Jordan became the first true athletic corporate figure.

So as I droned on and on about the pernicious Helms, Jordan eyed me and with a twinkle in his eyes, offered: “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”

I did a few of those Ralph Kramden “hom-a-na, hom-a-nas,” and fell silent.

Swish!

Jordan’s imprint is on virtually every style change in the NBA in the last 20 years, from longer uniform shorts to shaved head.

And despite an occasional condemnation from an activist like Jim Brown, politics as well.

Heck, Charles Barkley for years used to ruminate about running for governor of Alabama, though he’d vacillate between which party he’d represent.

But this year, with Obama running for president, the first black man to represent a major political party for president in the U.S., it appears that in record numbers professional athletes are taking an active role in support for the Democratic ticket, which probably is most representative of their history.

While professional athletes historically have been Republican-leaning or apolitical because of their economic levels, the huge majority, other than golfers and tennis players, come from poor or modest backgrounds which align with the Democratic party platform.

Generally counseled to avoid political discussion, this year’s extraordinary American presidential contest has shaken many from their neutrality.

Among those who have been active in the Obama effort have included former great centers Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Rookie (again) Portland center Greg Oden announced on his blog his support for Obama and afterward Obama gave Oden a phone call and, according to Oden, Obama said the Trail Blazers looked strong this season with the Oden/LaMarcus Aldridge pairing.

Hey, the Democrats keep saying they needed to get more to the center. Is this what they meant?

Others who have been involved with the Obama effort include the Suns’ Grant Hill, Atlanta’s Marvin Williams, Barkley, the Knicks’ Stephon Marbury and the Clippers’ Baron Davis. Though it’s not just the Democrats getting support as the Kings’ Spencer Hawes has been an active worker for Republican candidates.

Davis has hosted events for Obama in California and declared after Obama’s acceptance speech Davis felt like “going out to Venice Beach to register people.”

For anyone who’s even been there, “people” would be a loose term.

Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod said he was at an event with Davis and was impressed by Davis’ commitment and said the campaign has been pleased with the show of support in the usually neutral athletic community.

“A number of these athletes are deeply involved in their communities and they see an awful lot of need,” said Axelrod. “Obama is a guy who inspires a sense of both involvement and possibilities for solving these problems and they respond to that.

“From a generational standpoint athletes relate to him,” Axelrod added. “There’s a feeling among some people that all athletes are selfish and disinterested, but it’s not true. There are so many who are involved in the community, give of their ti me and money, like tremendous efforts after Hurricane Katrina, and they see Obama as someone who can inspire change.”

And, by the way, yes, Jordan has been a contributor to the campaign.

The only reason there involved is simple.. Obama is black and thats it. McCain will be better.. I hope people realize that soon enough. Obama is a disaster all these NBA athletes need to stay away and not get involved. this is why I can’t stand black people they always get involved when their is a black person running for something. PATHETIC is all i can say.. you don’t see any NBA that is white that is even saying anything political.

You all sound stupid. Oden’s politics are off? Why, because he’s a basketball player? And yours are better? Stop feeling yourself that much. And I don’t care if you are black, you don’t know why these guys are voting therefore you shouldn’t speculate. Saying that that is the reason is your attempt to rationalize these guys as if you know them…and you don’t. Their specific right as citizens states that they may vote for whomever they want. It’s THEIR right as much as yours, and you’re an idiot to try and assume why they make their vote and for whom. You ALL need to stop feeling yourselves.

There are like 20 white american players in the NBA, if even that. Most of the white players are from other countries and thus don’t care. And there certainly aren’t any white americans on par with the black stars in the league. Nobody cares what Adam Morrison or J.J. Redick has to say.

Although we would like to think it’s not this way but the athletes do support Obama because he is black. I wonder if those athletes understand that Obama stands for raising taxes on the rich. They may get their black president but they’ll have less money in their pockets!

DarkKnight: You sound like an illiterate idiot.
In any case, who cares even if they are supporting Obama because he is black? And, even if they are, having a black man for president is clearly in their best interest: it could have a profound effect on the way that people view race and African Americans in the U.S.. That alone could be a big deal, and something worth voting for.

First to Mike, really not fair to say, ” THESE ATHLETES DONT KNOW WHO OBAMA REALLY IS…….. THEY ARE JUST ON HIS SIDE BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. If I am not mistaken Bill Walton is white #1, #2 I don’t feel you have given them credit for having minds and being able to think for themselves and research an individual that they support and plan on electing to be their voice for possibly the next 4yrs. And then to assume the candidate that you support, “IS GONNA DO BETTER IF ELECTED” is just that, an assumption! And to finally state that, “JOHN MCCAIN IS NOT GONNA BE ANOTHER BUSH HE IS GONNA BE BETTER”, anoher assumption, is a bit difficult to believe when Mr. McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time, seeing as this is a Blog on basketball, I don’t think any one would be for a team or a player that only was 10% in anything.

    To Don,

You, like Greg Oden are entitled to your opinion.

    To the WhiteKnight,

is this really the reason why you, ” can’t stand black people “? HMMM…

I find it comical that Obama supporters cant seem to realize that Obama is an extreme leftist voting party lines every time he votes, whereas Mccain is a moderate. It also should be noted that Obama is a puppet of the Kennedys who will have no political power after losing this election by urging democrats to support Obama over Hilliary Clinton who is by far the stronger candidate. Obama wants to increase taxes by 5 percent for incomes exceeding 300,000 and increase capital gains tax from 15-20 percent. If you are an Obama suppoter please read into his policy instead of supporting him because of his speaking skills and the fact that he says “change” every one of his speeches

Maybe this is why the support Obama.

Ask yourself how many poor or middle class white people are going to support McCain even though his policies will hurt them more than Obama’s. Are they only voting for him because he’s white? This is asinine.

By the way “the Kings’ Spencer Hawes has been an active worker for Republican candidates.” He’s white.

Then you have Blacks voting for him because he’s democrat. You also have Blacks voting for him because the guy is up-to-date. You can’t get mad MIKE, Blacks see this as a opportunity to carry out Dr. King dream and celebrate on his birthday of this historic election. Which may I ask, why did McCain disapproved the holiday of King, I find that suspect?

Some young athletes might be supporting him just because he’s black, but that’s they’re choice…it may not be a good one, but at the end of the day Obama’s platform is more solid than that of McCain and Sarah “still not up to speed” Palin.

This is a good, interesting article. I always like to read that athletes are involved in politics.

Why didn’t anybody say Steve Nash was only criticizing the Iraq war because he’s a Canadian? Or Ira Newble only championed the people in Sudan because his ancestors may have been from Africa?

Truthfully, saying that “Blacks will vote for Obama because he is Black” is racist because it implies Blacks aren’t smart enough to look at issues. These athletes have considered the issues, watched some talkshows, and visited a few websits, just like everybody here. No, they’re not political wonks, but neither are most Americans. They just like Obama’s message and plans better than McCain’s.

It’s great to see these young athletes getting involved in politics. They should learn about issues, as they have, in order to be better citizens. Everybody should do the same. Get involved, talk about stuff, and support a political cause or two.

  23. bballer Said,

the reality is, whether obama was leading the democratic ticket or not, most bball players would align themselves with democratics for reasons mentioned in the article. the reason is the policies of the democratics are more in line with the economic circumstances the athletes came from. obama being black is just a bonus.

8 years of republican rule has lent america to going from a budget surplus to massive deficits. so if people need to learn or read about policies, i think republican supporters should do so. nothing about mccain will get the us out of its doldrums. if you go to obama’s site, download the pdfs on the issues, then you will learn he has a real prescription to fix america. the pdf’s has been on his site since february but of course, republicans refuse to read. oh yeah, mccain has admitted that economics is not his strengths, yet he wants to lead the country in its worst economic crisis since bush the first.

I am an Immigrant who originally hails from Belarus, 28 years old. I got here 10 years ago to attend college, and while I love my adopted home, I am sick of the racism that goes on here from everyone. Why is it wrong that blacks will support one of their own? How do any of you know that blacks are supporting Obama just because he is a black male? It is considered to be good community togetherness when Russians, Jews, Italians, Greeks, etc get together and make a united community, but when it is black people there are problems. I grew up in Belarus, and all i heard before i got here is how bad and disgusting black people are, and when i get here, its nothing like what i hear. My first college roommate was a black guy from st. louis, and while i wont lie and say i have only black friends, i have a good number of friends who are black. I think many non black americans have hatred driven by an inferiority complex.

I love basketball and I personally think it’s a great idea that people with visibility step up.

Darkknight seems to generalize in a very rude and inappropriate way, but I do believe there are a lot of blacks who will vote for Obama based on nothing more than racial loyalty. I do not consider blacks to be inferior in any way, however I do feel there is a disconnect between how America should function and cultural ellements of the so called black community where street cred is more valued than hard work and kindness. With community organizers telling people what they want to here, forcing banks into making bad loans, other socialistic agendas.

I think Obama’s politics are un-american he is extreamly far left. He disparages coorporate america and will try to redistribute wealth on a grand scale. These ideas are not american no matter what else you want to say about the man.

As a conservative it is disapointing to me to see where the Bush admin. has taken the government, and it is easy to see why the demo’s should be invogue. Based on the failure of the current administration this race should not be even close. The fact that it is shows how far out of touch Obama is at the general election level.

I hope athletes realize that those fat checks get a lot smaller when 35% comes out for capitol gains only. Obama is just wrong sorry.

Republicans do not have a clue what goes on here. What is wrong with redistributing wealth? I came to this country to see that I can make it with hard work. Not the rich get richer and everyone else get progressively worse. To hell with that and to you if you believe in that backwards stuff.

wow Styles nice angry post I’m sure your realestate licence is proof positive of your supreme intelligence. Your so smart I don’t know why you cant seem to figure out the the housing market crumbled because of sub-primes, Cobras, and other bad loan programs pursued by ACORN and other liberal agencies or did you miss that fact while you were signing people up for loans they couldn’t afford while you pocketed the comission. A lot of people losing their homes couldn’t afford them in the first place. I feel very sorry for them and their children however living above your means is never a good idea.

Also, housing isn’t the only thing used to gauge the economy it’s one of probably several factors I think GDP, and Energy might also factor in just a thought.

And Maksim Republicans don’t get it? You’re new to the country and your going come here and tell us that the republicans don’t get it. Let me give you a little history lesson. Our founding fathers believed a man should keep (most of) the gains of that which he has planned for and secured through his own hard work and risk managment. Keep working hard when you get a nice pay check you will feel the pain when 42% is taken out before you even see it. Your other point what’s wrong with wealth distribution well personally I feel like I know how to spend my own money better than the government does. I also admit that one day I would like to be rich and buy a large ski condo, and eat steak when ever I want. Their called dreams they motivate most people and if the government redistributes wealth well it’s harder to dream. If you don’t like it please feel free to go back to the country you came from.

You’re dead on regarding race and the scary-sounding phrase “redistribution of wealth”.

The highest marginal tax rate in the history of this nation was 96% (in the age of the Robber Barons) yet people making $40K are going to vote for McCain because Obama will raise the marginal tax rate 5% at an income level they can only dream of achieving. People of moderate means, and even some fairly well-off folks (an annual household income of $299,999.99 is nothing to sneeze at) will be voting against their financial interest if they vote Republican to say nothing of the social and foreign policy implications of the nightmare McCain/Palin ticket.

    Styles,

Your ignorance becomes apparent by your vicious attacks at me because of my point of view. Take stock in what Tyler Maughn wrote. Both of us intelligently showed evidence to why Obama in our view is not the right person for america. You are entitled to your opinion but your argument is weakened by your references to Mccain as mclame, as well as your attacks toward me. Also, since when has it been in a countrys best interest to redistribute wealth from higher earning individuals to lesser earning individuals. Capitalism allows any person to go from rags to riches in their lifetime. Obama is punishing wealthier americans for being successful and making them pay for everyone else. Capitalsim will falter under Obama’s tax plan. Why work harder than your neighbor if you are going to be taxed higher. Higher taxes will make america even more uncompetitive in business.

Styles, McCain’s tax plan benefits every down that makes 112K per year when compared to Obama. McCain will cut everyones taxes, but won’t cut taxes as much as Obama will for people making less than 112K pe year. Obama wants to increase taxes significantly on anyone making over 603K. That isn’t THAT MUCH money. People that make that much work very hard and shouldn’t be taxed as if they are “rich” because they don’t live the stereotypical rich person life (mansion, great car) or anywhere near it.

Which go figure will energize conservatives. “Dictator Palin” what is that based on. There is no doubt that Obama is worried about her you should be too because her presence just might cost Obama this election. We can only hope at least. Athletes, and specifically black athletes are entitled to vote for whomever they want as long as it benefits them. If your black, and your voting for Obama because he’s black- it’s okay. He will help african americans so what is wrong with that??

Secondly, in the past 8 years we have all seen the Bush Administration destroy the American Economy, cause other countries to HATE us, and we wonder why 9/11 happened. American soldiers are DYING every single day in Iraq and Afganistan… for what?? For the shitty economy that we have now? Freedom.. my a$$, the 3% of America’s population own 97% of the weath- thats a fact. Without redistributing wealth, how the heck can a dude making 50k become wealthy?

I am white. I am Australian.

However, I really wish that I could vote for Obama. Not only does your decision affect the country within which you live, it also affects the rest of the world. The US is the most powerful nation in the world and its media influence is colossal in terms of scope, reach, and impact. That Americans CHOOSE not to vote is absolutely deplorable to the rest of the world. So many nations and individual groups within nations (including the USA) have had to fight, struggle and die for the right to vote.

The rest of the world does not want its citizens to die in wars waged for no reason and forced upon them by unintelligent cowboys who like to blow people up in the name of ‘peace’. World War 1 was not really all that happy of a time for a lot of people. I also heard a rumour that a few people died in World War 2. World War 3 isn’t really going all that well so far either. Perhaps you guys could vote for a leader that has learned from the mistakes of the past. I beg you to please vote not only for yourselves but for the rest of the world too. Please vote for Obama….. for the sake of human rights, racial equality, a less polarized distribution of wealth, the restoration of America’s global dignity, and a decrease in bloodshed. Please…..the world needs it.

  39. Maximus Said,

You guys lack an understanding for how a country works and operates. Taxes are a necessity. Mccain says he’ll lower them, but how will he do that if hes trying to boost education and send more troops into Iraq. You people fail to realize how expensive that is. Its you republicans who should be paying the $170 billion that was spent on the Iraq and Afghanastan wars last year. I’m sorry but we need the rich to carry a larger burden. Too many recent presidents have promised so much for the present and delivered by mortgaging our future (financially and environmentally). We need to dig ourselves out of this hole by taking a step back and then going forward in a different direction, the right direction.
Also you guys need to chill on the race issue. It works both ways. There are a lot of people who are going to vote for McCain because he is white or more specifically because he isn’t black. There is no denying that the country does still have some racial divisions and thats why the election is even close. The people finally got it right in picking Obama over the big political machine candidates that we seem to get every year. I used to think Mccain was above it, but why would he pick Palin as a running mate if not just to win the election. Having her as a vice president is such a liability with such a health risk sitting in the oval office. She seems power-hungry but I get the feeling shes really just reading the script and playing her part. If she gets in office, the GOP machine will just take over again like it has the last 8 years. We need candidates that are bigger than their parties and Obama is that.

P.S. Matt, I hope you realize that a higher tax on 603k only affects the money that you make past 603k. you get taxed by each bracket. So everybody gets their first $8950, earned for the year, untaxed then they begin to get taxed on the next bracket for every dollar made after that. So if you made 604k, you’d only get that harsh tax on $1000 of the 604k. People making over 604k probably only represents 5% of our population at most.

This is my last post on this blog. Everything is Bush’s fault he didn’t destroy the economy all by himself. The housing failure is not his fault at all. Bush is responsible for increasing inflation (rebate checks from Chinese money), and fighting an expensive war. That is about it. Get a grip Mark remember who controls the congress with their whapping 8% approval rating.

Usually, in my conservative brain that invokes fairness I feel like the best person for the job should get the job regarless if he is black white purple or pink. It violates common sense and justice to say that blacks can vote for a black man just because he is black. Do we also remember that Obama is only half black I suppose that is enough. Mark obvioulsy a guy making $50,000/yr isn’t going to become wealthy on that income alone. He will have to either improve his salary or save and invest. Sorry I don’t feel like it is fair to redistribute wealth from the private sector to government. The government isn’t going to give mr. 50,000 enough to become wealthy they’re going to waste it on pork.

And white dude from Australia keep in mind blowing up stuff in the name of peace is better than doing so in the name of Jihad. Thank you for telling us how we should vote next election next time include some non pacifisct substance. War is a last resort for America, but it happens and unfortunatly it may become more common place so you and the rest of Australia better cowboy it up because your one of our main allies.

My opinion is that we as black people believe in what he says the same way we believed and loved Bill. Nothing to do with the skin color. I’m so glad I know that all people of a race are not ignorant because one person opens their mouth and removes all doubt. That’s why our country is falling off some people can’t handle diversity.

To criticize Baron Davis and others for getting involved politically and state that they are only voting and supporting Obama because he is black, is really stupid and racist.

John McCain personally tried to destroy the UFC. That’s enough of a reason not to vote for this war monger.

He’s an old man with even older ideas.

He made a highly political pick with Palin.

A 71-year old man who has had 4 serious bouts with cancer and he has the nerve to pick Sarah Palin to possibly the next president of the United States? This is as wild as some of the presidential movie comedies. Is this some wild Manchurian Candidate scheme which the North Vietanamese hatched while McCain was a POW???

8 years of Bush has been bad for America. Well, not for the Halliburton, Bush Texas oilmen set. John McCain is more of the same.

McCain’s pick of Palin should call his lack of judgment into question.

And as for the celebrated “surge,” I don’t believe a word of it. We will still be screwed in Iraq and Afghanistan. All they do is spend billions and billions on the war machine (Bush/McCain supporters in the defense industry) while also getting thousands of Americans maimed and killed hitting in a war that is wrong.

Can you imagine how much stronger our American economy would be if we weren’t pissing all that money away in Iraq and Afganistan???? This generation’s Vietnam.

This is the first time I’m voting and I’m all torn up about who to vote for…I like Obama a lot, he reminds me of MLK, and although I don’t know him obviously, McCain just doesn’t come across like he’s sincere, and also I worry about his temper and re-instituting the draft. But at the same time, abortion is HUGE for me. I don’t want women having any back-alley abortions but to me it’s obvious that life starts at conception and so that baby’s got a right to his or her life, even if they’re deformed or will be put up for adoption. As far as the tax stuff, capitalism is a game and just like any game there have to be strict rules to make it fair. All these tax loopholes and other cheating ways that the rich are dominating the game should be done away with for good- however for government to unequally and discriminatory-ily take money from the rich people is not fair, that’s not how the game is supposed to be played either. I may be poor but I know that two wrongs don’t make a right. And there’s a lot more to life than money- I don’t need to be rich to be happy or make an impact on society.

I think the big problem with America is that there is no longer any sense of community. It’s not supposed to be this way, with the government playing Daddy and forcing everyone to share and get along. We’re supposed to be helping one another- when somebody in the community doesn’t have shelter, then the whole community should be working together to build him a house; when there’s a single mom who’s broke then the whole community should be baking her apple pies and baby-sitting her kids, you know? I think that we’ve all become self-centered, thinking “it’s not my job to help [whoever needs help]; they can get government aid”.

So I just have no idea who I’m voting for. There are legit points on both sides; no candidate is 100% right, so how do you decide what are the most important issues? Do you trade off abortion and babies getting killed so that we don’t have World War 3 with McCain? Do you forgo “pure” capitalism so that people who need help and aren’t getting it from their family and neighbors and community will at least get it from the government? I just don’t know.

I’d like to see a black president in office; I think it would do our country a lot of good, hopefully help a lot of people to mature. But I’ve got to do some more research and a lot more praying to get my bearings on what’s the right call, because I’m taking this seriously.

Peace, y’all- and stop with the hate, on both sides–we’re brothers and sisters b/c we’re children of God, not republicans and democrats

Has anyone ever heard of identity politics? A number of republicans voted for George W. because he looked just like them. A number of Americans are appalled at the notion that young African Americans in this country are voting and rallying behind Barack because he is an articulate, well educated, AMERICAN, who happens to have a certain level of hue in his skin that resembles what they see in the mirror. Don’t you realize that Democratic women voted for Sen. Clinton because she “looks” like them? All this brings me to my point America is an identity nation. A number of older whites do not identify with Americas youth whether black, white, or hispanic. This brings us to this reality, Obama didn’t get the Democratic nomination because rappers, “ballers”, or entertainers voted for him, he received the nomination because as a whole, whether you are white, black, jew, or gentile, America is thirsting for change. America is thirsting for the sort of change that doesn’t articulate the point that middle class America has a per household income over 2 million dollars. If all of these NBA players only made $250,000 each year they might feel differently. That is the minimum amount you have to make for Obama to raise your taxes to an even-higher-than-the-all-time-high amount. I hope they realize that their vote and support for this guy makes it more difficult on the middle class by doubling the taxes of small business owners, thus crippling the opportunity for those business’s employees to advance. How does a small business get rewarded when the owner’s taxes are doubled? That only results in higher prices on products and lower wages and potential downsizing.

I appreciate the involvement of all of these athletes, and I hope it doesn’t have a racial origin, but I also hope that these athletes do their homework and realize the real affect of Obama’s policies on the groups that they care about most.

Anyway regardless of what anyone of us feel about mccain or obama. it boils down to one thing RACE. Its unfortunate that in the year 2008 that we are even have these remarks posted on blogs and chat rooms. I know racism still exist and may will never go away, but you would think some people would have enough SENSE to try to heal the past instead of putting more SALT IN THE WOUNDS.
Simply if Barack Obama was name Tom Jones and was white we wouldnt be having this discussion on who to vote for. Thats the truth. Face it people some of you cant imagine, much less bring yourself to the place where a Black person is running for President. I know its a shock to some, but we live here too. You think we should have the same privilages, but from the tone of MIKE AND TYLER AND OTHERS I GUESS NOT. I reliaze that is not the CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT thats bothering people ITS THE CHANGE OF THE FACE ON THE TICKET. EVERYONE knows the country need to change. Just look around you. The ones who dont see that are the IGNORANT, SAME OLD WAY people who just like to be set in there old ways of thinking and refuse to want to make adjustments. I may have my OPINIONS (and I do), and I might NOT KNOW everything, but one thing I do know is that this economy is not cutting it, and it hasnt been for the last 8ys,. Maybe others may say different because you have ALOT MORE MONEY, but for my family and I it is HARD. I have a business and I work hard (dispite what others say about realtors who dont know JACK about the busniess) just to pay my morgage and bills AND AT TIMES I dont see the light at the end of the tunnel, so I think just as how the PUBLIC gave Bush a chance for 8 yrs, who some may say is and was clueless and disoriented, and compounded problems after problems with NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT. I think the PUBLIC should have the right to choose if they want change. I believe SOME PEOPLE dont like change or to make changes. I know its hard, but its something that we all have to do at some point in our lives whether we like or not. So CHANGE should come because of the ecomomy not RACE. Everyone is making it about RACE and ignorant ideas that makes no sense. ie: Barack is MUSLIM- this is the most IDIOTIC COMMENT EVER. What if someone hate you or call you something because your name is spelled, or sound different. Is that how you like to be judged. I guess if you are MIKE I can see the answer to be NO because he has an AMERICAN NAME. GET A LIFE.

Off topic, but some months back there was speculation that Chicago would try to use MJ and Obama to help push their 2016 Olympic bid; I do wonder if MJ would jump on board to support such a thing.

Just glancing through some of the ignorant thrashing here is exactly why athletes have typically kept silent on politics. I couldn’t care less what an athlete’s political stance is but so many people look up to these celebrities that they can and often do have influence on the public.

The writing is on the wall. It’s not just a coincidence that for years and years athletes from the NFL, NBA, etc. voted predominantly for Republicans because of their income levels. Do you really think they are all jumping to the Democratic side because Obama is THAT good? That’s a joke, the NBA is a mostly black league many of which, and this includes white athletes as well, don’t know s*** about politics. I understand that McCain is not the greatest opposing candidate; I personally don’t like him either. I’ve heard numerous black people say things like, “He’s the next MLK” which shows their ignorance even more. There is a big difference between the human rights activist that MLK was and the duties and agenda that would be required of Obama as President. I am certain that if you asked Obama his answer would be very similar. Statements like that clearly prove that there is a good majority of black people voting for him for the wrong reasons, thinking that he is going to have black rights movement on his agenda. I am sorry but this day in age I simply do not see any more prejudice or racism against blacks than I do against whites, hispanics, asians, etc. Ask any big corporation to list their top three company philosophies and 9 times out of 10 “Diversity program” will come up. In many respects there are more opportunities for minorities than white people, just go ask the residents of Los Angeles. Mark my words; if Obama is elected he’ll either be hated by whites if starts to hold true to black rights activist’s views that most blacks seem to think he has. Or he will be hated by his own kind for purposely making political moves that are either in the opposite direction or “neutral.”

The Runnymede report identified eight perceptions related to Islamophobia:

    1. Islam is seen as a monolithic bloc, static and unresponsive to change.
    2. It is seen as separate and “other.” It does not have values in common with other cultures, is not affected by them and does not influence them.
    3. It is seen as inferior to the West. It is seen as barbaric, irrational, primitive, and sexist.
    4. It is seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive of terrorism, and engaged in a clash of civilizations.
    5. It is seen as a political ideology, used for political or military advantage.
    6. Criticisms made of “the West” by Muslims are rejected out of hand.
    7. Hostility towards Islam is used to justify discriminatory practices towards Muslims and exclusion of Muslims from mainstream society.
    8. Anti-Muslim hostility is seen as natural and normal

One-third of the worlds population is Muslim so mike if you think that they are going to be running the world than guess what you already lost so you might want to move to pluto or something. Also, yes there will be people who simply vote for Obama because he’s black, but aren’t there also people who will vote republican because they are christians and dont believe in abortion? The reason doesnt seem any more correct either. Now, I belive that athletes actually talking politics is benefiting our natuon because they can inspire the youth to actuallt go out and vote. But voting for someone is something that has no right or wrong answer, the point is to just vote and get your word out there.

Did I hear correct that your not IGNORANT MIKE…
Well here is the meaning- lacking general education or knowledge an unlearned group; incapable of understanding complex issues lacking sense or awareness; lacking information or knowledge; Destitute of knowledge; uninstructed or uninformed; untaught; unenlightened; Unacquainted with; unconscious or unaware; Resulting from ignorance; foolish; silly . I could on and on, but I think the last few words suits you best, FOOLISH and SILLY.

As a BLACK man this might give you and all those who are reading a little insight if you seem to forget the reality we live in enjoy the read:

    Just Because He’s Black

A white man asked his black friend, ‘Are you voting for Barack Obama just because he’s black?’

The black man responded by saying, ‘Why not? Hell, in this country men are pulled over everyday just cause they’re black; passed over for promotions just cause they’re black; considered to be criminals just cause they’re black; and there are going to be thousands of you who won’t be voting for him just because he’s black! However, you do not seem to have a problem with that! This country was built with the sweat and whip off the black slaves’ back, and now a descendent of those same slaves has a chance to lead the same country, where we weren’t even considered to be people, where we weren’t allowed to be educated, drink from the same water fountains, eat in the same restaurants , or even vote.&nb sp; So yes! I’m going to vote for him! But it’s not just because he’s black, but because he is hope, he is change, and he now allows me to understand when my grandson says that he wants to be president when he grows up, it is not a fairy tale but a short term goal. He now sees, understands and knows that he can achieve, withstand and do ANYTHING just because he’s black!

THIS IS OUR REALITY. BLACK MAN

I guess we’re still in the era that perceives the black athelete as the “dumb black jock.” Nobody mentions the fact that with the small number of ballers that came out of highschool aside, most of these guys have college level education. They are all in a much better position than the average american to make an informed deciasion on issues that pertain not only to themselves but the poor communities that most of them came from. With all the community work these atheletes do in the name of their franchises it’s only fitting that they align themselves with the party that truly has other’s problems at heart which is the Democratic party.

  75. Jay Said,

The money first athletes should be more concerned about the overall health of the economy rather than taxes. Being only concerned about taxes is not seeing the forest for the trees. Taxes are high for most people. Yet if you’re rich enough then you can hire tax experts and invest well enough to recoup those taxes unlike the average person that doesn’t have enough wealth to reap the full benefits of compounding interest.

The athlete can leverage their millions or hundreds of thousands to gain significant income with compounding interest. More importantly, poor fiscal policies and torpid regulation masked as free market economics destroys the value of their assets and cash not to mention create budget crises that make future tax cuts irresponsible. Also, it reduces disposable income with spiraling cost of living expenses and eliminates jobs of the people that support their balling out of control lifestyles. Also, if the owners are losing money at their day jobs then their struggles will become the franchise’s as well.

Fighting over the internet is like competing in the special olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded. This blog has turned from expressing opinions and ideas to bashing people and preaching each others ignorance. Truth of the matter is, as Americans we all have the right to vote for whomever we please. I will say that I am a McCain/Palin supporter. I don’t trust Obama and I think his campaign is vague and full of empty promises. He says he stands for change but expresses no means to get there. His whole campaign is based on promised change and trying to convince the American people that we will have 4 more years of Bush is McCain is elected. This is assanine. McCain is about the closest to Democratic than any recent Republican candidate we’ve had. And even if we was just as conservative, they are not the same people. Does Obama think the American people are robots and he can train them to believe anything he says? As far as race, I feel that has little to do with it. Yes, there are people that will vote Obama just because he is black, and you have white people that will vote McCain just to see a black man not get elected. This is stupid, but if you all live in the same world as I do, I hope you have noticed, there are stupid people out there. This is ust as stupid as voting democratic or republican just because thats what your parents were. As an American citizen it is your right and civil duty to research these candidates and to vote based on knowledge and not just because you think republican or democratic is the way to go, or mommy and daddy believe this. Ok, McCain might be old, Palin might be inexperienced. But how much experience does Obama have? His voting history is very vaque and he got bashed for that earlier. I support McCain because he isnot afraid to even go against some of the Republican beliefs and fight for what he thinks is right. This is the kind of person America needs as a leader and not someone working for reelection or public favor with every move they make. I am really worried that the race is this close, I feel the Obama campaign is based on a lot of lies and just hoping Americans are stupid and it might pay off for them. I wish people could take the blindfolds off and see what he really stands for and forget his fancy speeches and ” I sound intelligent” talk. Do some research and see where this guy comes from, watch that movie posted here earlier and ask yourself is the man America needs leading our country? I will post the link again. Some of that movie is just bashing and trying to make a play on words, but some of that movie clip is very true and should raise concerns in each and everyone of us, unless you choose to keep that blindfold on and wish for the best of luck. I urge you to awake and realize Obama can promise change all day but will it be for the better…..OR WORSE?

How you expect me as a BLack man to listen to something like that and say well Damien your right???? dont make no sense at all. Furthermore these people and you who created something like this has COMPLETELY DISMISS ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL THE YEARS OF WHAT BLACK PEOPLE WENT THROUGH. you want me to just forget that didnt happen…oh wait thats what everyone wants us to do.. to:
    1 forget the torture
    2 forget the hangings
    3 forget about the rapes
    4 forget about the lynchings
5 forget about the cutting out of babies out of pregnant mothers

7 forget about the back of the bus
8 forget about the N word
9 forget about seperarte bathrooms and drinking fountains
10 forget about the seperate schools
11 forget about the OPORTUNITY TO VOTE
12 forget about the racial profilings
13 forget about jobs we were passed over for….
and I can go on and on and on.., but you want me to vote for a man who spent 26 years in the senate office and all i hear about him is when they were talking about steriods in baseball.. wow. Yes he’s a war hero, but how many war heros we have???? and where are they, bet you dont know,

little research for you sir Mccain history before he was a “HERO’ was one full of trouble until his RICH ARMY DAD got him in the military school which an AVERAGE PERSON with his back ground and behavior would have NEVER GOT IN, and from that point FAVOR went his way. No one respects him they only TOLERATE HIM, AND THATS FROM HIS OWN PARTY. So as reckless as he was in the military , reckless in chosen Palin, you want him to be reckless with this country. gimme a BREAK.

Atleast Obama gave up the money to go help the poor, help the needy, and want to see change. Atleast Obama worked HARD to graduate from Columbia University, worked as a community organizer, and went to Harvard. Gave up the BIG BUCKs to WORK FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE. Mccain nobody is talking about his education background are they??? all they are mentioning his is navel career which HIS DAD AND GRANDFATHER PUT UP FOR HIM… Typical, but everyone is killing Obama his father is DEAD for God sakes whom he hardly knew and on top of that his mother is WHITE… YOU NEED TO DO YOUR RESEARCH.. you know what I’m sorry for the fact your ancestors might have been treated unfairly. But you werent so get over it. In fact now all you see is the white man being discriminated against in fear of discrimination law suits. I’ve been passed for jobs for black people, homosexual people, etc that I was more qualified for, all because companies are afraid of some pissed off minority sueing them. Its pathetic. You have a miss white america or WET television, or White only magazines that all are so blatently racist against everyone except blacks and you’d have jesse jackson knocking down your door. Dont get me started on him, only thing i got to say is hes always a part of the problem but never the solution. No, I ont want to vote for a president that has been going to a church for the last 20 years being told how white people are the enemy, and whom refuses to wear the flag pin, or put his hand over his heart, whose family arent proud to be american citizens. If they werent proud before this they should have left and tried to take over and ruin someone else country. I hope that you arent voting for obama just because you are black, I hope you are more intelligent than that. And if you have other reasons, I’m not quite sure what they would be. Maybe you just like to:
-pay outrageous taxes becuase we arent smart enough as citizens to decide where our money goes. We need more government to step in and encourage more lazy people to sit on their ass and collect benefits from the people who do pay taxes.
-or maybe you like the fact that even though this country was founded in the name of God and we use to have morals, we should throw all those out the door.
-or maybe you just think Obama is a great way to “get back” at all those damn white people that treated your family members so wrongly
-or maybe you want a president that has no love for this country and for whatever reason also has no respect for it either.
-maybe you want a president that is for lifting the ban on meeting with terrorist leaders and making deals with these kinds of people.
-maybe you want a president that wants to eliminate all our weapons pointed at these countries that threaten us on a daily basis.
-maybe you have other reasns i dont knnow about. But did you see a top Fundraiser for Clinton and the democrats backed out of her party and now endorses McCain.

    How racism works

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said ‘I do’ to?
What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama were a member of the ‘Keating 5′?
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

    Damien,
Bro. you are absolutly CLUELESS. Your statements are the very epitome of whats wrong with this country, and for me to even answer back to your remarks is REALLY belittling myself to your arragance. You and everyone else who claim we must get over it.. how dare you tell ANY BLACK PERSON to get over it. Did you tell the jews to get over the HOLOCAUST, did you tell women to get over being treated like a piece of MEAT over the years even though they are STILL struggling to this day with women’s rights. MR. Damien you talk about being pass over for jobs, guess what buddy you might be the very fewww from your class that you are in to have been passed over on, but that is a EVERYDAY thing in my race, an EVRYDAY THING, but I bet you still got a good job even though you got passed over, that doesnt happen much in our race. The BAR IS SET WAYYYYYYYYYYYY HIGH for us to achieve anything. Some of us fail because its too hard to reach, or the ROAD to get there is too hard, but some of us do get there. To this day there is only one BLACK owner in sport did you know that ONE. When the jobs were posted for the presidents of companies in this weeks Wall Street collasp and I say the people who are making over $20 mill a year NONE WERENT BLACKS. why you say because THE BAR THAT WAS SET BY YOUR FORE FATHERS, AND UNTIL YOU CAN LIVE IN OUR SHOES EVERYDAY, AND GO THROUGH LIFE as people judging you simple because you dont look like their color, then come and talk to me. You might not be the prototypical person who gets everything, but I’m pretty sure 9 out of 10 if you and I went for the SAME job, APPLYING FOR THE SAME LOAN from the same bank, try to Buy a house in the same neighborhood, 9 out of 10 Damien you will get it FIRST. Thats the real deal, thats living in this world as a black person. So don’t make me out to be a person SOBBING or Crying over spilled milk and I should just get over it, and that its not me that was treated that way.. How SLOW you are.. basically your saying this doesnt happen anymore (things about black people i listed above) yet your WILLING to look at a man judge him because of his name and color, and not who he is as a person and a senator that sounds like racism to me or maybe its just FEAR, FEAR of the unknown.
    ie:
If Barack Obama name was Harry Matthews with the same credentials and took the COLOR of his mother and not his father we wouldnt be having this discussion would we DAMIEN. Everyone is up in arms over his name and his color, and that he his muslim, and about his church background, which is it, is he a MUSLIM OR A CHRISTIAN even you cant get it straight, they are called EXCUSES. His COLLEGE EDUCATION alone should be enough for ANY JOB, but you rather have some BAFFON who relish in fighting and robbing the middle class, HAVE NO FORMAL COLLEGE EDUCTION, No family values and and and is un knowledgeble of the state of this country. PLEASE. If you had a better candidate then your arugment would be valid. After weighing the options Obama is the better candidate. OPEN YOUR eyes and stop this nonsense about YOUR FEARS, because thats what this is about PEOPLE BEING FEARFUL OF THE FACT THAT A BLACK PERSON CAN BECOME PRESIDENT. FEAR

I have absolutely no problem with voting for a black president. I dont knwo where you even got that from. I am the furthest from racist you will ever meet if you met me and knew me. I have many black friends along with frieds from other races. I dont judge anyone by the way they look, what their religion is, etc. What I have a problem with is radicals. People who take things and twist them into other things so far from what it originally was. I have no problem with muslim but radical muslim, yes. I am not even saying Obama is a muslim or a radical muslim. But if you go through his past his father was a radical muslim, he has gone to a radical black liberation theology church for the past 20 years, and he utters words like “typical white people”. Like I said I have no problem seeing the first black president but dont get too anxious to give it to this man just because hes black and you think its time for one. The guy is obviously racist and even says it alloud. He has radical views as his church has pounded into his head that basically white people are the enemy. I will not vote for this man for the same fact that I wouldnt vote for McCain if he came out and wanted to destroy all the black people in this world. Every race should be treated equally. And again I apologize about what was done in the past but lets not try and mae up for it by punishing a population that wasnt even around when these things were happening. I dont know where you live, but where I live as a white person I feel like I am the one that is being discrimiated against. You know I tried to take a loan out to open a business. I have excellent credit. I was told straight up that I would recieve no government assistance because I was a white male. I wish just as much as ou that the past could be changed but it cant. Lets not ruin the future though for what happened in the past. When it comes time and we have a legitimate black presidential candidate I will have no mixed feelings about voting for him. But not this man, not a racist, radical, man linked to terrorist networks, corrupt, I could go on and on. You are telling me I am making this an issue of race. But sir, I feel you are actually the one doing that. Please dont vote fo this man simply because the color of his skin. One day we will have a black man running for president that deserves to be president.

look Damien I some WHAT, KINDA UNDERSTAND what you are talking about.. u see things that way and I see it different.. this whole race thing is very unfortunate. I truly dont want it to be a race thing, but if your in my shoes and many others you can read through the inuendos and the smart comments that folks make.. Now i dont know his father only what the media TELLS US. When they did the documentry on him on cnn that was the ideal opportunity to voice that same concern to the public that you have, but when you have little extremist groups who is out for there own agenda that bothers me. The question I asked you , you have not responded to it, and that is If he was white with the same characteristic would those same extremist bash him the same way they do now?? how many leaders we had in the past with all sort of issues heck mccain is one too, but you know it depends on what people want to see and what they want to hear. I can go on and on to talk about the relationship of Bush and Bin laden, the fact that the same man who bomb the towers and admitted to it has his family living on madison avenue in nyc… Thats a problem…. WHEN THE CURRENT PRESIDENT AND HIM IS buddy buddy, thats a problem, when before the bombing they had dinner in the white house thats a problem.. , but no one talks about those things . which raises the question why cant they find BIN LADEN..UMMMM. so its all what they want you to hear and believe.. the question is what is truth and what is fiction we will never know all I know is the little know fact about my HISTORY and how problamatic it has become for us as a black race to acheive SUCCESS in the THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

  91. Leo Said,

Race should never matter in an election. the only things that should matter is what the candidates have done to better our country and how much experience they have as leaders. If you look at both of these things then you will realize that mccain is the better choice. I’m not saying he is great because he does have his faults but obama cares nothing about this country or you. he wants your money and the power. Our country is going down the drain with the economic crisis right now and we DO NOT need someone like obama in the white house who will raise taxes and give away a butt load of money. obama is not christian, which if you didnt know our country was founded on christianity. I respect how people choose to believe, but we do not need him in the white house. Obama has relations to all these terrorists leaders and other people who are against this country. Why in the world would you want this man for president. Yes he is black, who cares. I could care less what color he is . He is pro abortion ( aka. murder) he is anti gun, he is anti christian, and he is anti AMERICA. I am 15 years old and I recognize this man is a liar and an idiot. If you ever watch him speak, count how many times he studders in a speech. He doesnt have trouble speaking he is a great speaker HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. If he becomes president you need to be prepared for anything that isn’t good cause it is coming. John McCain isn’t the best candidate but compared to Obama oh I hope he kicks Obama’s ass.
