Wafer Memphis bound?
Former Rockets guard Von Wafer is close to leaving Olympiakos and returning to the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, one source told HoopsHype.com. Wafer’s European agents are working today to rescind his contract with the Greek powerhouse. The 6-foot-5 guard could soon afterwards join the Grizzlies for the rest of the season, the source said.
Wafer’s departure is apparently of mutual agreement. Wafer was due to make $2 million with Olympiakos this year but the team’s coach, Greek legend Panagiotis Giannakis, wasn’t playing him for the last few games. Management didn’t want to have that type of investment sitting on the bench, according to the source, so both sides decided to come to a quick resolution.
Wafer had his best season in the NBA last year with averages of 9.7 ppg and 1.8 rpg.

I thought Wafer was going to sign with a team this summer and have a breakout year, like Trevor Ariza had last year with LA. I think he is going to be a decent player in the NBA, but the Grizz are not the team for him. He’d be great on the Celtics bench.

Just so you know he was making $5 million with Olympiacos. The $2 million figure is how much is remaining on his contract. I think you should clarify that.

Clearly he didn’t fit there. Former Nuggets player Linas Kleiza is right now the top scorer in this team. Wafer has a strong competion from Papaloukas, Beverley, Halperin and Teodosic at the two guard positions, all good players. Maybe he and his agent searched too much a rich contract, and too little a fitting team…anyway, nothing’s lost: he missed only the first quarter of this NBA season. His market value should be still good…

It’s $2 millions per year with taxes paid by the team. So it’s over $2 mil.. I am Olympiacos fan, so upset that our coach couldn’t take the best out of Wafer. Many fans of Olympiacos are..

The Grizz are the perfect team for him! They have some really good young guys there already, but none averaging 10 a game yet. He and Young will share those minutes and the best man will prevail. Nothing wrong with a little competition to boost the roster and create good trade scenarios. Nice.

Good for the Grizz. They need a reliable 3 point shooter. Another quality addition to an up-and-coming team.

[...] Via Hoops Hype The second call-up of the season looks like it’ll be going to Von Wafer. However, since Wafer’s currently playing for Olympiakos in Greece, this one won’t be Gatorade sponsored. Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype.com has the (potential) story: Former Rockets guard Wafer is close to leaving Olympiakos and returning to the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, one source told HoopsHype.com. Wafer’s European agents are working today to rescind his contract with the Greek powerhouse. The 6-foot-5 guard could soon afterwards join the Grizzlies for the rest of the season, the source said. Wafer’s departure is apparently of mutual agreement. Management didn’t want to have that type of investment sitting on the bench, according to the source, so both sides decided to come to a quick resolution. Wafer has played in 50 D-League games over three seasons, eight on assignment by the Lakers to the Fort Worth Flyers and the remaining with the Colorado 14ers. With the 14ers, Wafer averaged 21 points, earning call-ups to both the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets. Since his D-League years, Wafer’s went on to play in 92 NBA games with the Nuggets, Blazers and Rockets. Wafer had his best season in the NBA last year with averages of 9.7 ppg and 1.8 rpg. The thing is that coach Giannakis is supposed to have chosen his own players this year for Olympiacos and Von was named as one of the key players. He just buried Wafer’s talent although he was the one who brought him to Greece! Just so sorry for Von. Best of luck to come!

I dont care who was on that team because the odds of them being better than wafer are really slim. greece is great at wrestling, weight lifting and soccer, but basketball..nope. It was likely a conflict of personalities, coach vs. player the most probable.

2 weeks ago, Wafer strongly argued with someone of the coaching staff and 2 Giannakis had to send him to the locker room. After that he was erased from the national league and it was said that he’d play only the Euroleague.
Wafer isn’t very reliable (character wise), I just don’t know how Giannakis thought he was going to help, his problem is well known and if I’m not remembering bad, Adelman had already sended him to the locker room in the middle of a game.
Jen, Greece won USA to get the silver in Japan (Worldchampionship) and 2 of the best teams at the Euroleague are from Greece. Some of their players are among the best European players.
