Stack not ready to retire

The bad economic climate has hurt a lot of players this offseason. Many marquee free agents have had to settle for low contracts and some others have been directly left outside in the cold with training camps already under way. The most storied of them all, with Stephon Marbury’s permission, would be two-time All-Star Jerry Stackhouse, who spent most of his last season in Dallas riding the bench and now finds himself without a team in October.

Needless to say, Stackhouse is none too happy about it.

“I didn’t expect it to go like this, but with this game you never know,” Stackhouse said. “I had a foot injury last season, couldn’t play in many games and now I’m in this situation. This past summer I have been working hard, working out in Atlanta, playing in some summer leagues and getting myself healthy and ready for the season. I’m disappointed because I think I can help a lot of teams.”

While Stackhouse worked out with the Hawks late in the summer – to rave reviews from beat writer Sekou Smith – Atlanta was never a very serious option for him. There was some contact with Houston, according to Stackhouse, but the Tar Heel is mostly looking to join a contender, which obviously the Rockets are not at this point.

“That’s my final goal. I’m trying to catch on with a team that’s close to winning a championship. I think after all my years in Dallas I have proved that I can accept a role and still help a team.”

The 6-foot-6 Stackhouse got close to winning the title in 2006 when the Mavericks blew a 2-0 advantage in the Finals against the Dwyane Wade-led Miami Heat. But he could have had another shot at it had the Hamilton-Stackhouse trade not materialized. To this day, Stack remembers the move with some grief.

“That was kind of a low point for me. I felt like we were building something good in Detroit and I couldn’t finish the work off. I was disappointed, but at the same time I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason. Maybe if I don’t get traded to Washington then I wouldn’t have had the chance to play with the Mavericks and spend those great years there.

“I still feel like I’m a Piston and also a Maverick because of the great times there. From a winning standpoint, the years in Dallas were the best in my career, but from a personal playing standpoint Detroit was my golden age. I kind of have a chip on my shoulder with that because I think I could have also helped them get over the hump”

Even though not ready to retire, Stackhouse says he’s contemplating some other options for when his playing days are over – mostly broadcasting and coaching.

“I definitely want to be around the game. Being able to be work with young guys and help them develop, I would have a blast doing that.”

Another potential career choice could be singing. With Walter McCarty no longer around, the deep-voiced Stackouse is widely regarded as the best singer in the NBA. He doesn’t rule out the possibility of recording an album.

“Singing? That’s another career opportunity for me right there!” Stackhouse said tongue in cheek. “It’s something I like to do in my off time. And you know, I’ve sung the national anthem on games a couple of times and people would tell me, ‘You should do an album, you should do an album’ … And I may do it. But right now I have a other options first. I want to keep playing. I have something left in the tank.”

I watched some film of Stack in one of the summer leagues. Granted he wasn`t in shape but he looked washed up. He looked like a shell of his former self. He got dunked on by John Wall and a bunch of others. Stack says he values defense and goes after everything that gets close to the rim so getting dunked on is bound to happen. Since when did he become a shotblocker…

i’m dying to see Stack on the court. I hope he gets signed by a contender. It would be great to see him with the spurs.

Stackhouse would be a great locker room guy in a young atmosphere he should go help a young team and play and go out like that not just another player tryin to jump on the boat and get a chip.

Stackhouse is a great scorer and an experienced guy who can give a solid contribution from the bench to a contender. I see him in Denver, helping them with some needed yoff the bench (they lost Linas Kleiza) and with him on his side, JR Smith could finally develop into an All-Star player.
    George Karl, take him!!!
Otherwise I see him in Utah, they lack production from their guards and he could provide much needed shooting touch!
Stack deserves at least a possibility to show he can still play at a high level after the injury, and I think he will prove it soon!
    Go Stack!

Joey, i’ve heard and read from everyone that saw him play this summer that he looked in shape and played like he was 3 years younger. So i don’t really know what your talking bout.

Man when did stackhouse get old. I must be old as dirt now, he was my first favorite player (until i started watching Big Tick play) stack has still gotta have 15mins a game for a title contender. If he is in shape teams would be silly not to atleast take a look at him as a second unit scorer. He could join my C’s and be the best 12th man in the league!!

If stack wants to play on a contender, I can definitely see him playing with Boston.
If he wants an easy ring, he should sign with LAL.

    Joey:
Since always. Dude had some sick hops when he was younger, and this block was only 3 years ago, after all the surgeries.

He had plenty of this type of facial during his years with Detroit, Washington, and UNC. Back in the ‘05 playoffs, he was strong enough to tie Mutombo up for a jump ball, and then win the jump from him.
He’s great at posting up smaller players, and still has the handles to take bigger players off the dribble. Stack is also an amazingly good free throw shooter. He still has plenty to offer to a contender off the bench, as well as the ability to mentor younger players.

    Get him now my nuggets!!!
I like this as a cheap option to replace Kleiza. A proven star (albeit) older, with a point to prove. You can’t realistically tell me that he can’t contribute. I know he’s 35, but he played 10 games last year. This could be a veteran minimum steal. What do the Nuggets really have to lose?????????

It would be nice ( I have no idea what the cap ramifications would be or roster spots left) to see him sing with the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, or Cavs. I think he could help those teams in a very limited role. If not, going to Houston is an option or getting one last big payday in Europe by cashing in on his name.

I don’t give a darn about two-time all star Stackhouse but I do hope that three time all star Antoine Walker gets picked up. Both Chicago and Charlotte are teams that are a little light on veteran PF/SF combo type players.

The good news for Stack is as long as Larry Hughes is still playing he won’t be the most washed up player in the league.

For his post basketball career he should considering being a mason. He already has considerable experience laying bricks…

Hello Europe…..The smart thing to do is to sign a Europeean contract with an opt-out clause. For further reference call Dominque Wilkins, Anthony Parker, Mateo Basten or Marc Jackson (the fat and lazy one). The downside - he might actually pick up some passing and defending skills. The upside - an easyway to loose your entourage.

Ok, I’m tired of the portrayal that the Mavericks wasted his last good years. Shoot me down all you want but Stack was more worthless than Devean George for the Mavericks.
For one thing, he didn’t want to be here in a bench role (though Dallas has had multiple “6th man” candidates in each of the last 3 seasons, he saw that role as beneath him) and his “injury” kept him out of most of the games.

I watched all but a handful of Mav games over the past 4 years. In his tenure he took too many ill-advised shots and never offered that leadership figure to the younger wingmen. There is a reason he isn’t getting signed and it’s because he isn’t a capable NBA contributor anymore.

Stack should hang it up. At age 35 he doesn’t have anything left in the tank to give to a team. I think all of the title contending teams have deep rosters and wouldn’t have use for him. He prob may sign with a young team and be a 12th man as a locker room presence for the young guys. Thats what Portland did with the signing of washed up vet Juwan Howard. So my prediction is he will not get signed and his NBA career is done
