Kobe is great, but get me LeBron
Kobe or LeBron… At this point of their careers, who’s the better player?
Devin Harris: You can’t go wrong either way. They are different players that can do different things. They take over games in different ways. Kobe will score, can hit shots from all over the court. LeBron can get you more rebounds, he’s more of a forward. It’s hard to choose either way… I grew up a Kobe fan, so I’ll say Kobe.
Thaddeus Young: Do I have to pick one? That’s kind of hard. I’d guess I’d have to go with LeBron because he’s a walking triple-double. He can score 40 points and still get you 11 rebounds. With Kobe, you know he’s definitely going to score, but sometimes he’s going to have nights where he gets just one or two rebounds. Kobe is a great player. He’s one of the best players ever, but at this point of time I’d have to go with LeBron.
Al Thornton: I’d say Kobe. I’ve guarded both of them and they are hard. They are both great players. But as far as all-around skills, all-around feel for the game… I say Kobe.
Al Horford: They are at different points in their career. LeBron is rising and Kobe, you know, is up there. It’s hard to say because they have not had many battles against each other, but if I have to figure this thing out, I’d probably say LeBron.
Leandro Barbosa: Man, it’s a tough question. I would say both players are incredible, you know. I love the way Kobe plays, I love the way LeBron plays… But it looks to me like Kobe has more experience and, although LeBron is rising, I’d say Kobe.
Arron Afflalo: Kobe is probably the best player as far as skill level while LeBron is superior to almost every player athletic-wise. But just from a basketball standpoint, I think Kobe has the lead.
Derrick Rose: Both are very good players, great players. It’s really tough to choose only one of them.
Who do you think is closer to winning the championship this year?
DH: I say Kobe. LeBron and his team can make progress, can make improvements… But the Lakers had a taste of it last season, so I think they have a little bit of an edge.
TY: I’d probably have to say Kobe. He has a better team and has more experience. He’s a great player, he makes his teammates better and he has been there before. They know how to get things done and I think the Lakers are a better team right now.
AT: Kobe. The guys that are with him are good and they have been there. Yeah, they lost to Boston last year. But had they won one more away, it may have changed.
AH: I’d have to say Kobe because they are on the other side and if we play Cleveland in the playoffs, I’d like to think that we might be able to beat them (laughs).
LB: The two teams are up there. They have been doing really well. Both have been doing a great job. Cleveland is doing a great job, but Los Angeles too. So I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
AA: They’re both very close. The Lakers are playing very well, Cleveland is playing very well… They are the leaders and they are hungry for a championship. It’s a tie on that one.
If you had to pick only one of them as your teammate, who do you go with?
DH: I think LeBron should be better. Just because he draws defenders and opens up the game for you, he can play several positions… And also he’s a great guy. From what I hear, he’s a great teammate.
TY: First, I’m going to tell you what kind of player I would always look for… It would be a great point guard that can get you rebounds and can get you the ball, kind of like Jason Kidd. Now if I have to choose between those two, I’d say LeBron.
AT: I think LeBron is a better teammate than Kobe, so I’d have to say LeBron.
AH: LeBron. He’s an all-around player and he’s going to score, but he’s algo going to defend and he’s going to distribute the ball.
LB: What if I say both? It would be a dream for me if I could play with them. I sit on my couch in my house and wait for their games to come up on TV so I can watch them. I’m happy just to have them in the NBA and it would be even better to have them on my team.
AA: Since I am a two guard and I want to be on the court, I’d have to pick LeBron so that I can play. I don’t think I’m getting much playing time if I’m with Kobe. I’d have to go with LeBron for that reason.
DR: I would have to say LeBron. From the times I’ve played against him, you can see he’s a good teammate and he’s a good guy.
If you have to pick one thing from Kobe and another one from LeBron so you could add that to your game, what would you choose?
DH: LeBron’s physical abilities. He’s 6-foot-8 and, what? 250 pounds? 260 pounds? He’s one of the best athletes out there. He’s so powerful, yet he can be graceful… From Kobe, his toughness. His ability to go over guys and get to the hole.
TY: From LeBron, I’d say his passing ability. From LeBron, I’d probably say his shooting ability. He can definitely score from anywhere on the court! He’s going to knock it down. So yeah, Kobe’s shooting and LeBron’s passing.
AT: Kobe has an all-around consistency and is dedicated to the game. LeBron, I’d have to say his physical impact on the game.
AH: I would ask for Kobe’s shooting and probably from LeBron… His dunk repertoire (laughs).
LB: Their defense. They do a very good job on defense. LeBron, he is the man on the defense. And Kobe is very good too.
AA: From LeBron, you’d have to say his natural physical gifts. With Kobe, I’d say his overall skill level. He’s the most complete player in the game. Just his overall game.
DR: Kobe, being an all-around player. With Kobe, his driving.

From Kobe, I would take his DEMEANOR. I love when his TM’s mess up and he looks pissed off at them. Seems like a good teammate.
From LeBron, I would take his NERVOUSNESS. I love when he steps up to hit critical free throws, and then misses badly.
Give me BRANDON ROY! All around game, great teamwork, natural leader, poise and confidence!

I think its pretty clear this article is mistitled. Almost everyone interviewed agreed Kobe had better overall skills and game. Comparing them is ridiculous, and its ludicrous the way the article is titled. Its just another example of fanboys gettings a hold of blogs on the net, and the media in general trying to rewrite history. What a shame, they will never truly know what a complete player is unless they watch Kobe or D Wade…. this LBJ hype is a shame, he’s magnificent but far from a great one on one defender, an overrated passer with his ball handling, and a terrible …TERRIBLE shooter, can’t come of screens and pop, can’t properly dribble to the whole without a crab dribble cheat… the media has ruined the NBA.

We have a Jordan Fan.
A Brandon Roy fan WTF?
A Spurs Tim Duncan Fan, so of course your going to hate especially Kobe. As far as Kobe kissing arse? Dude he’s is trying to better himself who are you to judge. And I do agree that this comparision is getting way to old. Lebron is a huge small forward thats all he is, and he has horrible coaches that have the offense giving him the ball 90% of the time. He doesnt have a post up game at all, and his shot is not that good. I have felt and feel that he doesn’t have a true traditional position on the court for his size. Kobe has refined his game and is a bit restrained in the triangle becuase he plays within the system except for he 4th quarter when he takes tons of shots and sometimes horrible. So who is better, Kobe is because of his experience. We have to wait until Lebrons career gets more mature to even ask this question.

His shot obviously is not that great, but its 100x better than it was last yr and will continue to improve. His defence is incredible this yr; he’ll def. be all-defensive this season.
About the topic, its a little unfair to compare the two (btw Winkstrap; TOTALLY agree with your TD comment); one is 24 and has not even peaked while the other is 30 and in his prime now. These interviews pretty much say it all. It explains why if you’re starting a team you want LeBron over Kobe every time. It takes more than being the best player on the court to be a leader, your teammates have to WANT to rally around you. That’s why Kobe led teams will always fall apart when the pressure is on.
Black Mamba Said,

Kobe is definitly a better player than Lebron. He will flat out score 50+ on any NBA player when he wants. But Lebron, his jumpshot sucks and he misses alot of freethrows. In late game situations, Kobe instantly beats out Lebron for being clutch. All the players say that they would rather play with Lebron because that way they wont get outshined as much. Meanwhile, put these players along Kobe and they look like Luke Walton. Its obvious that Kobe’s superiority outweighs Lebron’s and he even locked him down both times they played. So yeah, game over.

its clearly titled that because tho they agreed kobe was the best player, they all said theyd rather have lebron on their team. think about it first. secondly there may be a question as to whos better now, but kobes past his peak, and lebrons ceiling can get even higher. and frankly i think wade is at least in the conversation. and as far as teammates go, it doesnt get much better than dwade. kobes a good teammate when he wants to be, and even then he thinks of himself first. do u remember when he crashed into andrew bynum. his reaction wasnt “o shit my teammate hurt his knee, that could be bad for his career,” his reaction was “damn that really hurts my [our] championship hopes.” thats what i read on his face and from the fact that he walked away instead of stayign with bynum. class act, kobe is not. hes clearly great, but i dont think hes better than lebron or wade. one last thing, it truly bugs me to hear people say kobes game at MSG was better than lebrons. 61 points is only 9 more than what lebron got. and lebron got 11 assists and 9 rebounds. kobe had 3 assists and 0 rebounds. the difference in points is negligible when u take into account the incredible all around game lebron had. to me this shows why lebron is better than kobe. he makes his team better. kobe has the more advanced skill set, but hes not the better player
Edison Chen Said,

All Lebron’s game is penetrating to the hole because of his physical abilities and if teams try to zone or surround the rim he passes it out so his teammates can shoot the 3. People call that better skill than Kobe?

i agree that the nba is force-feeding the next jordan hype to one, a selfish player whose only skill is scoring, so i dunno how people say he is an overall player and two, to a player that hasnt proven anything yet, getting swept in the finals. Kobe is great, yes, but he was in the shadow of shaq and anyone who disagrees are idiots, i think thats why shaq was three-time finals mvp also. lebron is not as pure a shooter as kobe, but he can shoot and pass and dribble. lebron is def more overall than kobe, but still not in the class as jordan. Its funny how no one gives WADE is due credit. his career number compare almost equally to both these plaerys, but never mentioned as king of today. and yes, he won the championship for miami. hes just gonna have to win it this year again with JO as his new low post sidekick….itll be funny to see wade beat lebron in the playoffs, then beat kobe in the finals

Lebron is the best player for about 44 minutes into the game, but I need Kobe for those last 4 minutes! Lebron’s only like a Scottie Pippen, and Kobe is he’s Michael Jordan. They need each other to win back-to-back-to-back-to-back….titles! Bottom line is, I’m trading Big Z, Mo, Wally, Varejao, Booby and Delonte to get Kobe “super clutch” Bryant.

Go ahead and check on those two links below and then go cry some more. Pretty much this article told us what we already know: Kobe is probably a better scorer at this point in time, but LeBron is better at everything else including being a better teammate, and will likely be a better scorer by this time next year. He’s already better than Kobe was at this age.

The only thing i get from this article is that Lebron is the better teammate then Kobe, which is probably true but it may not be, we are not in their locker rooms. There is nothing from this article that could make anyone say Lebron is the best player in the league, because he isn’t. In fact i would rather take 3 players over Lebron. He is just a fantastically marketed athletic monster but he is NOT the best BASKETBALL PLAYER in the NBA. Also i don’t give credit to either Kobe or Lebron for those games against the Knicks. They did it against such a terrible defensive team in the Knicks and D’Antoni. Those games are not as amazing as everyone makes them. ESPN blows them out of proportion.

When it is all said and done this generations list of the greats will be:
#1(a) Lebron
#1(b) Timmy
#2(a) Wade
#2(b) Shaq
#3 Kobe
Dwyane Wade is just barely better than Kobe. He already has one championship and will certainly have two more before he retires.
Think of it this way–Kobe and Shaq were teammates for 8 years and only had 3 championships together.
If Wade and Shaq (during Shaq’s prime) were teammates for 8 years they would have more than 3 championships together.
Remember Wade and Shaq got passed the “best defensive team of all time”, the Pistons, with an injured Shaq and ailing Wade to win it all???
And this year I predict Kobe’s Lakers will lose to Parker and Timmy’s Spurs in the playoffs. But if Wade was on this years laker’s team instead of Kobe, the Lakers would win.
Kobe will eventually retire (probably before his number’s decline too much) with his 3 championships he won with Shaq.
But Lebron is just a freak!!! A freak of nature!! Not a very talented player. Guys like Shaq and Lebron are just too big and strong/fast for their opposition which is what makes them so great.
That’s why Lebron is ahead of the rest.
Scottie Pippen Said,
February 15, 2009 @ 1:56 pm
This argument is pointless. Lebron James is by far the best player in the league right now. Why?
1. He plays defense, anticipates, and is a great playmaker like myself
2. He can score like my teammate, Michael Jordan
3. He can run the floor and pass like Michael Jordan’s bitch, Magic Johnson
Only homers in California, country’s biggest state, would think Kobe is near LeBron’s talent level. Give LeBron’s the team that Kobe had last year and the Lakers would have beaten the Celtics in the finals.
LeBron was able to take the best Boston team to 7 games with scrubs. Kobe couldn’t go past 6 games with all full squad with many other star level players.

You can tell by some of these comments how young some of you are. Lebron said himself that he grew up a Kobe fan. Even when they play each other you can see Lebron is in awww of Kobe. During the summer oplympics tryouts Kobe owned Lebron…guess that was overlooked.
For the ones saying Lebron is the better teammate…who cares? After the game I dont wanna be around a bunch of dudes anyway…sometimes yall act like yall dont even like women…always wantin to be around dudes…lol. Yall want a teammate to pass the ball to you so you can miss the shot and you can all hang your heads together….as a team!!

To GC who made a prediction of how the players of today will be ranked when it’s all said and done:
IMO Shaq and Duncan are #1, you can’t put Shaq behind anyone else, I’m sorry. You say he only won 3 titles with Kobe on his team but though Kobe fans don’t like it, Shaq was the man behind those rings. LeBron, if he wins multiple titles, will earn his spot right behind Duncan and Shaq but to get ahead of them he’ll have to make a dynasty, Michael Jordan-style (I’m talking like 4-5 titles). Unless he does that, he and Kobe are tied for #2 right behind the bigs (Duncan & Shaq). And then maybe CP3 (if he continues to be so good and wins a title eventually) and Wade (who looked like the best player in the world when the Heat won the title but they haven’t been as good since).
Beaner Said,

Dwayne Wade should not be in this conversation. I keep hearing he won it by himself. Give me a break. They were on the verge of losing that series to a cupcake called the Mavericks. Does anyone think without Shaq they would have even been in the Finals?
Kobe’s championship teams destroyed their opponents. They went 15-1 one of those years. Kobe’s first championship was at 21. Kobe was already a recognized Starting All-Star at that time. Don’t penalize him because his teamate also had tremendous talent.
I would never argue Shaq was not better with the Lakers, but those Laker championship teams were far better than the Heat’s one and only championship team.

Lebron is like a scottie pippen on steroids. He is a physical freak of nature. But please don’t compare their skill level. Kobe can do things on the court that Lebron can only dream about.
Also, it should be noted that of course most the league would rather have Lebron as a teammate. He is a better teammate who shares the ball more. You know if you play with Lebron, your still gonna get your shots. Wih Kobe, everyone in the league would have to be willing to take a backseat.

Something else that never gets mentioned when comparing Kobe’s 61 vs Lebron’s 52,11,9 against the Knicks: Lebron played 8 more minutes in his game. The way Kobe was going, you have to believe that with another 8 minutes of playing time he would have finished with 70-75 points. That would change the argument a little.

As much as Lebron is a better all-round player due to his body type (you can’t expect a 2 guard to grab more boards than a 3/4 forward)…this isn’t a conversation until Lebron wins a ring, or 3. Kobe may have had Shaq, but the bottom line is that he has the rings to back up the fact that he’s the better player along with the fact that Shaq needed Kobe just as much. Did Shaq every hit a mid range jumper to win a game or series? Just like, Tim Duncan is better than KG, because he has MORE rings..he obviously makes his teammates better than KG does. Don’t bring Robert Horry into this discussion, he wasn’t the central piece of any of the teams he was on.

who cares its just another silly comparison,an attempt by the media to stir something up…its like when everyone compared Kobe to MJ,,its very funny how people go to such lengths to prove different,so what they are both amazing players who entertain us all.

Dwyane Wade indeed had sex parties. He’s a good boy though, he’d always pray to me after slaying a hoebag.
I blessed Lebron James with athleticism, size and a small weiner (trust me on that one).
Kobe Bryant’s wife doesn’t let him sleep in their bedroom. Many nights have been spent on the couch.
Tim Duncan is actually man-made. I never created him. Microsoft engineered a 7′0 robot, currently running a quad-core intel chip. They did a poor job with the firmware - couldn’t even fix that blank stare bug.

Seriously, floorseats09, have you ever played ball? Have you ever even played an organized sport? Being a good teammate has little to do with going out for beers after the game. Your description of what you think passing the ball gets you pretty much defines you as the perfect Kobe fan. Blinded by the flash, and with little understanding of the game. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that guys who play basketball for a living don’t rate teammates on how much fun they are to party with.

ok i’m from lebrons home town so i can be a homer alot. i can say from watching every game lebron has played in that the sky is the limit for this guy. his d-fense this year is off the charts. one on one he could be the best now in the nba. the cavs do have the best team d-fense. no one can guard him one on one. ask boston they bunched up the paint against lbj last year. can’t do that now cuz we got mo williams whos shows he can put up 40 in a heart beat. d west comes back watch out. we have the deepest team in the nba. we r very close this year. i think alot of people that hate lebron see him on sports center and maybe watch a full cavs game like 4 times out of 82. they have no clue.
shooting - kobe
passing - lbj
3 pointers - kobe
team player - lbj
paint scorer- lbj
leadership - lbj
defense - lbj
wow factor - both

one more thing kobe did very poor in the finals last year with this same team he has today. boston shut the paint down on him as well as they did lebron. i see sum say kobe passes better come on? lebron is a hybrid of oscar robinson and magic. he can pass with his eyes closed. he and kobe are neck and neck but now please remember lebron just turned 24 he is just getting started. watch out!!! FLIGHT # 23 or will it be #6 hmmmm???? we’ll see.

I guess the best player ever, besides Bill Russel, that should be compared to both Kobe or LeBron is Steve Kerr. Aside from back-to-back 3point shootout trophies, he won four straight championships. I could only do three straight. He’s the best in recent NBA years…

Le Bron is devoid of any effective low post game. The Cavs last game against the Lakers exposed why he is not the BEST PLAYER in the NBA outside of ESPN’s hallowed hype machine. He is Mr. Dribble Drive without a reliable jumpshot. Kinda like MR. DUNK in Phoenix - big, and strong, but offensively, leaves you wanting more than just Eddie Jones on steroids. The Laker’s defensively stifled LBJ with KB picking him up from the get go. It’s skill over strenght! Thousand of hours invested, perfecting techniques like a consumate martial artist who is never satisfied because it’s all for the love of just doing the act.

To the guy that said Wade is better than both of them: You are out of your mind! Kobe and LBJ are all-time greats already, Wade is a current superstar. He’s got a ways to go. Also, Kobe is the best in the game. Look at what his peers say.

Who’s stronger, superman or the incredible hulk?
What tastes better, apples or oranges?
Are blondes sexier than brunettes?
What is more important, a guard or forward in a basketball game?
Some of you will understand my point. Basketball is a team game. Kobe and Shaq didn’t get those rings by themselves. Lebron won’t get his by himself.
You really can’t compare a perimeter player who relies on skill and speed to a forward who relies on size and power.
Didn’t any of you watch the olympics? Kobe and Lebron (and Dwayne Wade) played great together. Their skills are complimentary not adversarial. Lebron played power forward like no one has played it since Karl Malone retired. Kobe is the prototypical shooting guard and led by example.
I think a better question than who is better, is who would you rather watch play? I can understand why people would prefer to watch Lebron.
Being a Lakers fan, my preference is Kobe Bryant.

Ok…If I understand this article correctly:
Magic Vs MJ:
Who do you want to play with?
Magic
Who is a better team player?
Magic
So, was Magic better than MJ?
The bottom of line is anyone can create its own criteria to compare players.

when the cavs lost to the lakers it was not lebrons fault. every time we lose a big game it’s said to be all on lebron. how bout the first game the cavs lost in LA the cavs did not have big Z or d west. that about 28 points plus gone so we lost big. the last game we lost in cleveland was a team lost. we didn’t rebound or defend good. so that guy that said that game showed us about lebron your an idiot. before that we won 5 strait vs. LA. it’s not lebron vs. kobe. it’s cleveland vs. lakers. how about we just enjoy both of them cuz as our dads tell us about the greats of all time , we will tell our kids wow lebron and kobe were unreal!!!

Wade blows both of them out of the water.
He has got one finals mvp, Kobe and Lebron combined have a big fat zero.
People think he isn’t in the argument, and a lot of that has to do with his injuries taking him out of the NBA spotlight for close to two years. His final performance in 06 blows anything Kobe has ever done in the finals out of the water, and Lebron got swept so lets not even talk about that.

C’mon guys, we all know that Kobe is the king right now,the swagger, the skill and the mental toughness makes him the Alpha male of the NBA. but it 3-5 years LBJ is going to be the man, and he’s gonna be downright scary . That is if he improves on his shooting, he can’t just rely on his athleticism, when the other teams starts to check his game, he has to have something else to show in his arsenal. And that is the all important jump shot, the best tool to have during clutch situations. I’d give Kobe a good 2-3 years, then LBJ’s reign will start. Peace!!!

Wow most of you guys have no clue how to read and comprehend an article. OK, first and foremost there was different categories. Who’s better at their career at this point, that better be Kobe, because he has been in the league a lot longer. The fact that LeBron is in the conversation already as far as that level proves how good LeBron is. Second, it sounds ridiculous for you guys to defend Kobe as better, when everyone around the league picked him as a teamate over Kobe, so if the guys playing the game are picking him, who the heck are you guys to think Kobe’s better? Third, most players, including Jordan in his early years, use the drive to the basket more until they develop a shot. LeBron has come a long way, and still has to develop a good consistent jumper, and a back to the basket game, and when it does it’s going to be lights out. The numbers he puts up are ridiculous, and something Kobe can only do in a videogame. Take a gander at them sometimes.

Wade is over rated.
That team won on defense. Wade has a weak defensive game.
Yea, I’m gonna believe Wade carried Shaq to a championship. Shaq only led that series in rebounding and was the biggest defensive presence on the floor. Three of the Miami wins were by three points or less, your dreaming if you think Miami would have won them without Shaq. Mavericks are soft. Following year the same young talented team got beat by the 8th seed in the first round.
Wade is leading his team to .500 in a thin Eastern Conference. Miami would be 10th in the West behind Phoenix.
I ain’t buying what they are selling. I don’t care how many commercials I see of his fat head.

Hey Octo! How about them things on Wade’s grill? LBJ can’t post up because he does’nt know how… It’s time to bust out those Dantley and Aguire video tapes, maybe he’ll devote the same amount of time and effort the way he dedicates himself in making those ESPN ads and commercials, after all he said he want’s to be the last man standing when it’s all said and done. He could be the second coming of Vince Carter, I remember they used to pimp him on T.V. the way they do LBJ now.
