    What a boring video.

First minute you are talking about Pau Gasol’s arrival. The next you talk about Kobe vs. LeBron, then you end with Ira Newble hogging the video til the end. No direction whatsoever. Players know better? Not suited for the video at all. The direction of the video is too vague.

players always know better, because they have played. Most analysts have never played or cant run, jump, shoot, or dribble( Dick Vitale, Skip Bayless) yet the do all the analysis and are consider experts. Then they vote for mvp.

And I promise if Newble still played for the Cavs, he would say LeBron is the MVP

The Lakers got hot and became a legitimate contender AFTER they picked up Gasol.
Then Gasol got hurt and Kobe couldn’t carry the Lakers.
Case closed. CP3 is the MVP by a BUNCH.

  11. george Said,

    April 10, 2008 @ 2:39 pm

    Brenda,

Weren’t the Lakers at the top of the West when Bynum was dominating. Oh, and didn’t that lineup whoop the Hornets easily. They were contenders before, they are contenders now. Research before you speak blindly.

  12. abc Said,

    April 10, 2008 @ 2:43 pm

Kobe has been playing hurt for the longest time, afterall, lakers have been playing without their center for the longest time (Bynum, Gasol and Mihm). We know basketball still has a lot to do with size. Turiaf is not a true center and when he’s in foul trouble then lakers are forced to play Mbenga (who they picked up late in the season because they don’t have any body inside). Hornets have 2 all-star this season, Lakers only has 1. Not to take anything away from CP3, but Kobe’s been in the MVP talk all season long, CP3 just recently surfaced. It has been Kobe vs LeBron just couple weeks ago, and CP3 just surfaced as the top 2 candidate just these two weeks. Keep in mind, ALL doctors said that Kobe NEEDS surgery, but he’s playing hurt and he’s still helping lakers winning games. They beat Dallas & Utah (at Utah where they’re practically invincible and humiliated Spurs by 26 points) without Bynum or Gasol. I wanna see Hornets do that without David West and no true center.

  13. Debbie Said,

    April 10, 2008 @ 3:55 pm

    Um, Brenda…wrong!
It gets so tiresome when people with no knowledge of the Lakers spout drivel like this.

The Lakers were legitimate contenders before Gasol, until Andrew Bynum went down. You obviously don’t watch or follow the Lakers. If not for Bynum’s injury, the Lakers may have never made that trade that brought Gasol. They are now thought to be a team that could possibly take it all because of the impending return of Bynum. Not without him. And just to clear things up for you, their record was 5-4 without Gasol.

To say Kobe can’t carry the Lakers is just more of the same old tired song-and-dance that someone with no basketball IQ spews ad-nauseum. Kobe dragged a squad made up of second string players to the playoffs two years in a row. This year, without Bynum, without Gasol, without Trevor Ariza, and with a hand injury that requires surgery, he took them to the top of the Western conference. They are still in a tie for second place. Kobe fills the seats and electrifies crowds everywhere he plays. How many times does your guy hear MVP chants for him in a hostile arena?

CP3 is an amazing talent, no question. And if he wins the award this year, so be it. It will only make Kobe that much tougher in the playoffs, and I have to admit that would not be a bad thing. But to say your guy is the MVP by a BUNCH just exposes you for the hater, and the homer, that you are.

  14. Soccermom Said,

    April 10, 2008 @ 3:56 pm

uhhh if players voted for mvp they would vote for the star on their team… DUH. what a stupid video. “Do players or media know basketball better?” gasol must have been thinking, is this guy retarded?

  15. Dave Said,

    April 10, 2008 @ 4:22 pm

It’s really simple. At this point if the Lakers can end up with the best record in the west KOBE will win MVP. If the Hornets win the best record it will be very very close with Chris Paul having a chance to take it.

I think people will see how Kobe is so great at making those around him play better and providing the kind of leadership he was once critcized for not having, especially with all the injuries this season.

Also the Lakers having the best record will mean they enter the playoffs supercharged by this and with all playing very strong.

Basically if the Lakers win the next four games and Hornets win 2 of four they will match their record. Than it will go to conference record which is identical but Lakers might be higher if they win 4/4 and Hornets 2 of 4.

Tough. Kobe will really have to just prove he is a leader to win the award.

Chris Paul - best player on a team with the best record out West. Has carried his team along with only one other star David West. Leads the league in assists. Statistically superior to all other PGs in the league. Has become a franchise player for the Hornets and an ambassador for the game for the people of New Orleans. Has exceeded all expectations.

Kobe has had a great year. But Chris has breathed new life to the league.

Kobe has deserved MVP consideration for years. But he has simply come up against better choices.

  23. Guillermo - Hong Kong Said,

    CP3 - MVP

The Hornets has the best record in the West and CP3 is the only player who hands out 20 points plus 10 assists per game in this decade. What’s more, he leads the league in steals and assists! And he shoots at a higher percentage than KB24 in all the three categories!

Friday’s game will give a better indication.

P.S.: I deem that Lamar is a more legitimate MVP for the LAL than KB because Odom just work so well with Gasol and he is the man who just pulls the Lakers together.

  24. Jay Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 8:38 am

Everyone, I have read a lot of post on who should be the “MVP”, here is my opinion, I have been watching the Lakers for 44 years and the NBA in general, I’m 46 years of age and I played this game at a very high level in school and in college. See the problem here is that Kobe probably will never win a “REGULAR SEASON MVP” for the simple fact that he is not liked by the same people that talk positivily about him on T.V. but when it comes down to voting, they vote against him, to me that’s like being racist, but the bottom line is that CP3 should win the MVP this year because he deserves it, I will give him that, but let’s really think about this whole thing, Kobe should have at least 2 going on 3 MVP’s already, just think back to the 2004-05 season I believe this is the season he average 35 points a game, 81 in one game, and set other records and believe this or not he receive less votes than a none super star in this league, and that person received two votes. So the bottom line is simple, give the “MVP” to CP3, Kobe plays for NBA Titles

P.S…JUST ASK THE BASKETBALL WORLD WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER
PERIOD. WHO WILL LEAD THE USA TO GLORY IN THE OLYMPICS, AND THEY WILL SAY KOBE!!! AND NOT CP3 NOR LB.

  25. Jay Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 8:49 am

Guillermo, think before you post, Lamar most likely will be traded when the season is over, he is so inconsistence, out of 10 game he may have 2 or 3 good games, that’s not going to cut it here in LA, it will on the Hornets, but not here in LA. This it the problem myself and most have with him.

  26. Jax Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 10:56 am

i think the idea was great! of course - the media choosing the MVP is a joke. i think that someday somehow that the NBA would consider its players vote for the MVP race. i do believe that they really know better.

with the Kobe and CP3 case… to my mind Kobe is the MVP. it’s not right to say that the Lakers “got hot” when Pau arrived, cause they were hot even before Pau came. Pau’s arrival just gave them a better chance of being one of the top contenders. also, they say the Lakers did well this season because of Bynum? hello peeps?!? what’s up with you guys? do you think Bynum would be as good if he plays for a team without a Kobe Bryant? Kobe demands double teams that gets his teammates open - the only difference that Bynum made, was that he converted shots better compared to Kwame!!!

there’s no question that CP3 is really fantastic this season, but come on… he is surrounded by better players - i am saying as a whole. the composition of the Hornets is much better compared to the Lakers, yes they don’t have a deep bench, but so does LA, i would argue that Farmar, Vujacic and Turiaf are overachieving players.

    only my pov.

Since I left, the Lakers are barely above a .500 team, losing in the first round of playoffs, when they made it. Look it up! Jim the moron, they weren’t 7-3, they were 5-4 w/o Gasol - more Laker fan fantasy. Laker fans say any BS they can make up. Here’s a guarantee for everyone - when the Lakers start to struggle in playoff games, Bean Bryant will start to criticize team mates on the court in dramatic fashion (because he’s on national TV and he doesn’t want it to look like it’s his fault, it’s his team mates fault). What a leader!

  28. angelo Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

It’s really simple. The lakers were already contenders coming into the season. What’s new? With Bynum, Odom and even Fisher coming back they would have been nuts not to be good. Bring in Gasol and they’re even better,

But where was the hornets last year? Chris Paul’s performance this year is the reason why a team that didn’t even make the playoffs last season is at the top of the Conference. Sure Kobe carried his team but surely without Paul, the Hornets would still be in the lottery now. Without Paul, David West wouldn’t have been an all star and Chandler wouldn’t be playing so well. That’s Valuable!

contenders at the start of the season? the lakers were a mess at the start of the season, with kobe wanting to be traded, bynum being an unknown comodity, lamar being as inconsistent as ever, and a bench that included the three amigos (kwame brown, brian cook, and luke walton). at the moment, the lakers the potential to be a dominant team in the league but u have to remember that they played without bynum for half of the season, theyve only had pau for about 20-30 games, and lamars only now starting to become consistent. the only underlying factor thats been there all season is kobe and thats why the lakers are 2nd in the west right now.

chris paul is great but take away david west for half the season and only give them peja or chandler for 20-30 games and theres no way that they have the best record in the west. they prolly wouldnt make the playoffs

Kobe demands double or triple team all the time, CP3 doesn’t, so.. argument about CP3’s higher FG % is not valid. Hornets aren’t a bad team, lakers have only one all-star this season, Hornets have two. They also have Tyson Chandler playing the whole season averaging double double. Not to mention that they have an ex-allstar in Peja as well. People, please don’t forget Lakers are playing without a true center for a very good portion of the season AND Kobe has been playing hurt for the whole entire second half of the season. It’s true that CP3 AS OF NOW is the best player on the best team in the West, but season ain’t over yet. Lakers were sitting at the #1 spot for quite some time as well. They’re both deserving, we’ll see how the game comes out tonight when lakers play hornets. Twice when lakers played the hornets, Lakers were without bigs and lost, the only time that lakers had a legitimate big man in the middle against the Hornets this season, Lakers trashed them.

  34. Paul Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 3:45 pm

Honestly, the MVP is a joke. What is the criteria? It’s been a joke since Barkley and Malone received it over Mike. I mean they gave it to Steve Nash (completely forgetting he’s a complete defensive liability, the first year he won the award his former team went to the chip, and Iverson, second half of the season, and Kobe both had years for the ages) and Dirk (must we really discuss how flawed this turned out)… It’s a joke… Kobe has been the best player in the league since the second Laker’s chip. His maturation, of course, has been slower because he hadnt been the man from the beginning (like Mike was). If you compare Kobe’s progression as the man to Mike’s progression as the man (i.e. singular franchise player) on the team they are about right in line. That being said although I think Paul gets exposed his first post season (all that pick and roll with Chandler, not happening in the post season), especially if he plays a pissed off Deron (he always gets the best of CP3), he is an equally deserving candidate PER THE REGULAR SEASON. Period… They owe Kobe but if they gave it to CP3 could you really be mad?

  35. Paul Said,

    April 11, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

Lastly, KOBE IS MY DUDE but I dont want to hear all about Kobe having a bad team THIS YEAR. Clearly, in years past they’ve been trotting out a division 2 women’s college team (Kwame Brown, Chris Mimh and Smush Parker, ARE YOU SERIOUS?). But, this year the Lakers are loaded (GREAT roll players), tough veteran leadership, and the bench is deep (they honestly have an 11 man rotation). The Bobcats, Minnesota, Heat, and Knicks starters couldnt beat the Lakers bench.

shaq, that’s equivalent of saying MICHAEL JORDAN IS A JOKE, he can’t win a title without Pippen or Phil Jackson. Anyways, reality is in, lakers beat hornets. They were beating them so bad that lakers were slacking off big time. Lakers put a lot of pressure on CP3 early on and guess what? his FG% is way way off. That’s the difference between Kobe & CP3, Kobe receives that kind of attention on daily basis, but still able to put up numbers. If CP3 demands the same exact defensive attention that Kobe gets, then his FG% is going to drop. Too bad, it’d be nice to see Kobe ripping a triple double on the statement night, he’s only 2 assists shy. Hornet would be embarrassed if Peja did not get a super hot hand. For a good portion of it, CP3 wasn’t even on the court, Jannergo Pargo was doing well along with Peja.

  43. Paul Said,

Ummm, Shaq is arguably the greatest center of all time and the most dominant (not the best) player of my generation besides Jordan… That being said Shaq was more responsible for the break-up of the Lakers than Kobe (all Kobe wanted was Shaq to act like he did for Wade, pass the torch, and get out of the way) and has shown an obvious lack of class in his departure from the Heat. I mean if your getting up 1000 shots a day, working on your game overtime, etc. do you want to show it or not? You’re playing with injuries and through injuries do you want to hear about a cat sitting cause of a big toe? Then, when he comes back after you put the team on your back now he gets ALL the glory again? Nah, and anyone who compares Kobe to Jordan as if Jordan would have stood for that IS OUT OF THEIR F***ING MIND! If dude could have hit some free throws he would have been one of the top three b-ball players of all time, easily. I agree with Shaq but he should never speak out on another player in the league like that. He shouldnt be asked to play with Ricky Davis (especially Ricky Davis), nobody should, but he owed Wade better than that… He rode his (and the refs) coattails to his next chip… Funny thing is Wade (and Lebron to an extent) are set to become the Kobe’s of the East without the negative P.R.

  44. Mark Said,

    April 12, 2008 @ 12:08 pm

MVP voters should take a player’s defensive prowess into consideration as well as a player’s +/- statistics, not merely his offensive statistics. If they did, they would have never voted for Steve Nash, and they would see that Kobe is more valuable the Chris Paul. Kobe makes the Lakers better defensively (their defensive rating is much higher when Kobe is playing) and Kobe has a +/- rating of about 13 points per game compared to about 12 points per game for LeBron and about 1 point (actually slightly less) for Paul. While Paul certainly makes the Hornets much better offensively, this edge is almost entirely wiped out by the fact that the Hornets give up many more points with Paul on the floor. When Paul is not playing, New Orleans gives up about 99 points per 100 possessions; with Paul it goes up to about 106 points per 100 possessions.
