The Top 25
A new NBA season is upon us and we have no idea who will win the championship. There’s a reason why… We have an abundance of teams that are more than qualified – like the Lakers, Hornets, Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, Mavericks and Suns in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference might not have as many powerhouses as the West, but there still are plenty of qualified teams. Cleveland, Detroit, Orlando, Philadelphia, Toronto and Atlanta all proved last year they can be tough opposition come playoff time to try to dethrone Boston.
Boston is the favorite until someone beats them and the Lakers are the favorite in the West, especially with Andrew Bynum back in the lineup, but I don’t want to focus on teams this early. I am targeting players and where they rank coming into this season.
Here are my Top 25 players in the league and my reasons for ranking them.
25. Shawn Marion
The most versatile forward in the game. Shawn gives a team a little of everything and a lot of solid defense. Underappreciated for what he brings, he will command a ton of attention at the trade deadline if the Heat can’t reach a contract agreement with him.
24. Manu Ginobli
The guy is a winner and a competitor. Definitely the best foreign player in the league when it comes to effectiveness in clutch situations. Led the Spurs in scoring and carried them in crunch time. The most disliked player in the league on the road due to his playing style… But every team would love to have him.
23. Tracy McGrady
The key for Tracy is to stay healthy. I wonder how committed he is in the weight room. Body has not changed much during his career, which is a negative. Definitely one the best scorers in the league, but on-the-ball defense will be huge for Houston this year. He needs to back off on deferring to the three-point shot. I always felt he is a mid-range shooter and that’s what the Rockets need him to be.
22. Chauncey Billups
He has great leadership abilities, but I think he has to step it up even more. He seemed to get along with ex coach Flip Saunders, but allowed his teammates to step out of line too often last year. I think at times he’s a little too unselfish because he is the best scorer on the team with his ability to get a jump shot or drive to the basket at will. I expect more this year to validate being 21 on my list.
21. Caron Butler
Gilbert Arenas will have to take a back seat to Butler when he gets healthy. He has become the heart and soul of the Wizards. He has an ability to create shots when none seem available and his jumpshot has improved every season. A true warrior who has battled injuries the last few years.
20. Elton Brand
When healthy, he’s one the best power forwards in the game. The Sixers now have one of the best post players and screeners in the game. Brand has a lot to prove this year and eyes will be on him all season long, but he will prevail with consistent offense and sneaky shot blocking ability.
19. Baron Davis
I will not believe Davis leaving Golden State was on his own accord. The Warriors are going to suffer without Davis and the Clippers will be rewarded. He has the most underrated on-the-ball hands in the league defensively. And we all know of his ability to change the opponent’s defense when he has the ball on the perimeter or the post.
18. Shaquille O’Neal
Quite honestly, in my opinion he is still the most dominating presence in the game today. He changes the game when he is on the floor and that makes him still one of the best players in basketball. People tend to talk about his commitment to staying in shape, but look at it this way… How many big men like Shaq have lasted this long? Zero. Give him credit for maintaining what he has with that massive body. Stanley Roberts, Benoit Benjamin, Oliver Miller… No, not great players like Shaq, but they could not stay in shape because of the bodies they had. He will produce some big numbers at times this year with the Suns slowed offense.
17. Carmelo Anthony
A combination of finesse and power. A tremendous offensive rebounder and finisher around the basket. Anthony would be higher if he developed better leadership abilities and trusted his teammates more often on the court. He will definitely wind up in the top twenty in scoring when his career is done, but championships will elude him if he does not continue to improve his overall package.
16. Tony Parker
Please find me someone who can stop him from getting to the basket? You will not find that person. Speed and underrated strength allows Parker to get in the paint and complete shots. Parker is a true winner and is the most dangerous penetrator in league history. His jump shot in the two-man game with Duncan has made him a true force.
15. Paul Pierce
His nickname is The Truth. Well, true it is. He has an uncanny ability to score on anyone off the dribble or in the post. He loves contact and is definitely one of the best go-to clutch players in the league. His leadership qualities really came to light during the championship run. That has elevated Pierce among the greats in Celtic history.
14. Allen Iverson
The toughest player pound for pound in the history of the league. A medical marvel that never runs out of energy. I often wondered if Iverson would last five years in the league, but I understand now why he has endured. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the country when he decided to focus on basketball and now we understand the ignorance to pain when it comes to him. He is downright relentless and a joy to watch.
13. Steve Nash
Every time I see Steve Nash I ask God why couldn’t I have been born 10 years later. Nash is the most unselfish player in the league. He honestly dislikes taking a bunch of shots. His enjoyment comes in the form of an Amare Stoudemire or Shaq dunk or a Raja Bell three-pointer than actually scoring 20 points a night. That’s why he won back to back MVPs and that is why he is still one of the best players in the league. Nash will be counted on to use that stroke more this year because he will play off the ball more than usual. That’s a great move because he is the best shooter in the league.
12. Dirk Nowitzki
He is the best shooting big man in the league, but needs to improve individual leadership on a team in need of it. He also has to stop deferring to the three-pointer and become more assertive around the basket, which he can do with ease. (I apologize to Dirk and all Maverick fans for the oversight. He clearly belongs on the Top 25).
11. Deron Williams
Williams will do something unheard of in Utah if he continues to improve every year. Yes, I will say it… Make people stop thinking about John Stockton. The Jazz are right back at the level Stockton left when it comes to a point guard that leads and produces victories on a consistent basis. Williams is definitely the strongest point guard in the league and equally as smart when it comes to making decisions in a Jerry Sloan offensive system.
10. Dwyane Wade
Would be higher if he could just stay healthy. I mentioned a few years ago that he would not last long in the league if he continued to hit the floor 50 times a game. Wade was fantastic this summer in the Olympics and showed me that he could possibly lead the league in steals. He has really gotten himself into great shape so I expect him to get back on track to becoming the great player we all expected him to be when he led Miami to a title.
9. Chris Bosh
Reminds me of Bill Cartwright, but athletic. I would be terrified to guard him because his body seems to be going in twenty different directions when he attacks, but it works and gets him to the free-throw line consistently. Now with Jermaine O’Neal beside him, he should take off even more. He really needs to develop a go-to move inside and stop trying to incorporate a thousand moves, which I think gets him in trouble at times.
8. Dwight Howard
Can be as good as he wants to. He has the body to maneuver anywhere he wants to on the court and that is huge at this level. His rebounding ability and presence on the court alone warrant Howard this spot. Must improve free-throw shooting if he plans on moving up any further.
7. Amare Stoudemire
The most feared power forward in the game because of the embarrassment factor. He is what I call “dirt strong” and it’s deceiving because of his slender build. His shooting stroke is picture perfect and consistent. Terry Porter’s new offensive system will allow Amare to get more post-up opportunities, thus improving his trips to the charity stripe, where he hovered around 80 percent all year. He should average 25-plus points again this year and improve defensively.
6. Yao Ming
Injuries cost Yao last year, but before he left for the season he was playing like the best center in the league statistically and one must wonder if Houston would have broken the Lakers’ 33-game winning streak if he did not go down at the beginning of it. He is difficult to guard when in top shape. I expect him to have a great year leading the Rockets deep in the playoffs. Ron Artest will keep him from picking up cheap fouls with his great one-on-one defense.
5. Kevin Garnett
Kevin is the here because he finally got a chance to combine his talents and leadership with All-Stars Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. He is the most persistent player I have ever seen. I have never seen Garnett take a night off emotionally. If you have watched Garnett over his career, he is in constant dialogue with himself for 48 minutes and 82 games. That, my friends, is special in itself and now he is a champion.
4. Tim Duncan
This guy is pure professionalism. I would love my son to live with him for a summer. His demeanor and unselfishness with his teammates is pure gold. He could average huge numbers every year, but understands winning championships is more important. No way does Ginobili lead the team in scoring without Duncan allowing him to. Give credit to David Robinson for instilling that in Duncan.
3. Chris Paul
He is here because I personally think he is the best leader right now in the NBA. He has admitted studying Steve Nash and it is obvious when you watch his interaction with his teammates. Paul is a clone of Isiah Thomas and he showed it last year. The best pick-and-roll guard in the league.
2. Kobe Bryant
The closest in talent to Michael Jordan and in a lot of ways better than MJ. Dislike him if you want, but he is the perfect example of preparation when it comes to basketball. He is the smartest player in the league and makes the game look easy.
1. LeBron James
The best physical tools in the history of the game. He has the smarts of Magic Johnson, the brute strength and athleticism of George McGinnis and the speed of Ricky Green rolled into one massive body. I have said this since he has been in the league… If he continues to improve his jump shot, he will become the best ever.

It’s nice that Nash is selfless; it’s nice that Shaq is a beast; it’s nice that Amare is feared; what is not nice is that the Suns will be worse than anytime under D’Antoni.

Paul Pierce not in the top 10? This guy now has a ring (and more to come) and guided the Celts to the banner despite guarding LeBron and Kobe! He does it all- defense, offence, passing and rebounding. Just a total complete All-Star, unlike someone like Iverson who plays no defense and has not led his team to a banner.

Kobe should be #1 due to the simple fact he is an all around player with multiple achievements and especially championships won, let me refresh your memory its 3
Lebron = 0 and in your own words you said quote ” If he continues to improve his jump shot, he will become the best ever.” and he is rank #1??
Kobe is there ( no need for improvements, all around player, check the stats) and he is the best since MJ left!

This list can easily change with only half the season. Lot’s of talent in the league. The east is lacking in PG’s right now. Arenas is out. Billups is the only lock on that all-star spot. Derrick Rose might actually be an all-star if all goes well.

Kobe Bryant is the best in the game right now, and the rating should not be if player improves a weaknesses (there is no guarantee that the player will e.g. Shaq’s free throw problems, Michael Jordan’s three point shot, etc). Currently he cannot shoot the ball outside the pain on a consistent basis, nor is he an average free throw shooter. If Chris Paul was Lebron’s height he would be completely unguardable and if Lebron was Chris Paul’ height Lebron would not be in the league at all.

No Dirk? Are you crazy? So Dirk doesn’t make the first team All NBA last year…so that means he sucks? Basically the voters are saying, “no, we don’t think Dirk is top 5 anymore… but he’s obviously top 10.” (Yes he did make the 2nd team last year.)
Oh, there is a 3rd team too. Guess who made that list last year - Carlos Boozer, Paul Pierce, Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and Manu Ginobili. You put all 3 of them on this ‘top 25′. So, of last year’s “top 15″ players, all of them but Dirk are on your “top 25″ list. And… JOE JOHNSON made it… dude has only one all-star appearance!!! You are such a Dallas hater it’s sick. There is no phase of the game where Kobe is better than Jordan. With multiple scoring titles and defensive player of the year awards to his credit Jordan never played with a dominant big man like Shaq. You did get one thing right though. Lebron is probably better than Kobe. Lebron may be quick but he is nowhere near as quick as Ricky Green.

When I first saw this article I thought ot myself, Kobe has to be the #1 player on this list, and I’m glad I read the entire article 25 to 1, to see how you ranked the players. I understand why you chose LeBron, I watch his act as much as possible, you never know what this guy is going to do next, and for a guy who is 6′9 250 or 260 lbs, it’s simply a freak of nature to see him do the things he does. His unselfish play contibutes greatly to his success and I see why he, at the end of his career will be the best player ever. Some of the other players on your list I’d rank differently, but I respect your judgement.

Jon, no way is Kobe better than Lebron! It’s as much about physicality as anything else. Lebron is a monster, look at him standing next Ben Wallace next time you watch him play, he is nearly the same size with the speed of a guard. His passing skills are out of this world, and he can guard any position. In my opinion, in the end the intangibles is what puts him over the top. Lebron is a better leader. People want to play hard under him, and he commands more respect from his teammates. When things get rough on the Lakers they fall apart mentally because Kobe generates animosity. Not so with the Cavs.

Okay, he´s evidently not cool when it comes to the Playoffs.
Let`s compare him to number 25: Joe Johnson
Carrer JJ: FG 44,2 3p37,7 FT 78,0 R 4,2 A 4,2 ST 1,0 B 0,2 PPG 16,6
Career Dirk FG 47,1 3p37,9 FT 87,0 R 8,6 A 2,7 ST 0,9 B 1,0 PPG 22,4
Dirk`s better in every Category except for assists and steals …

You would pick a player like LBJ, kobe, nash, duncan who can carry a team throughout all phases of a game and season. Dirk would come second as a robin to the previous players batman. If the mavs are to have any success this season it will be because of Kidd, not dirk.

Kobe should be number 1 not Lebron, Lebron at two would be alright, but he could also fall at 3 with Paul going second.
Lebron - the best ever? i don’t think at this point, even if he does improve his jump shot dramatically, that he could take the title of best ever from Michael Jordan. first, Jordan became the best ever not only because of his individual achievements but because of his dominance of the NBA. sure he has great teammates but that is also because he brings out the best in them. but still, Lebron have a lot of playing years left and i ought to see what kind of a player he becomes.

If you watch the game he only worries about getting his. So is attitude changed this year because he is not losing. He still the same chum wanting to be traded. Eddie,
Pretty darn good list if I may say so myself. Here is my problem with your list regarding Duncan’s ranking, and by the way, I appreciate the kind things you said about him and The Admiral. If it’s true that Duncan defers to his teammates instead of putting up numbers like Kobe and Jordan, then wouldn’t that make him the best overall player? He (along with Shaq) is the most consistent winner of NBA championships since Jordan retired. Duncan still puts up 20 and 10 a night AND still manages to win championships and defer to his teammates. Wouldn’t those overall qualities make him the best overall player? Sure, he doesn’t have the flash or athleticism of Kobe, LeBron or KG, but like you said about Nash and CP3, he makes him teammates better. That is something LeBron does a little bit and Kobe only started doing last year. CP3 is the best in the game right now doing this at the point, but what does he have to show for it? Nothing yet.
So Eddie, if you’re basing your rankings based on athleticism or taking over a game, I can see why you have Kobe, LeBron and Paul above Duncan. But if you’re basing it on everything - skills, dominance, clutch play and making your teammates better - than The Big Fundamental is no doubt No. 1 on this list.

Eddie its been a while but lets get it popping.
You are right Bron is number one…cause only Bron stops Bron, last night was evidence his blown free throws cost the Cavs the win but his talent on the court was above everyone incluind Pierce and KG. The Lakers against the Celtics is still a mismatch of heart vs style…also Lakers dont make it out the West as they got too many guys playing for contracts this year…Odom, Bynum even Kobe (opt out on his mind), …
Lastly, mano a mano….Lakers vs Cavs look and see if Kobe even dares step to Bron and look at see whose team looks more hungry and ready. The rest of the list seems debateable though about right, but your “Bosh reminds me of Cartwright” was a crazy comparison….good but one dimentional offensive center vs a beast of a versital 4-5 player with a deadly mid-range jay and solid post up and shot blocking skills..Bosh should sue you for slander.

Sorry Kikin Gasol v. Marion okay, I’ll grant you a stalemate
Nowitzki better than Butler I absolutely agree.
Stojakovic better than Joe Johnson, Okay so you’re doing stand up now? Stojakovic is a one trick pony and that one trick isn’t as good as it used to be. Stojakovic shoot threes that’s it, he doesn’t rebound, assist, defend, set picks or even lead practice. Stojakovic better than Joe Johnson three words Hah Hah Hah.

Good list to get a conversation going, but biy do I disagree with some of your choices. Chris Bosh ahead of D-Wade??? Ask all the GM’s which player they would rather have and I will bet that at least 29 of the 30 GM’s will take Wade. Ginobili is way too low. The guy is the go-to guy for a team that has won 3 championships. How you rank players like Caron Butler and Baron Davis ahead of him is beyond me.
Fun list though. Keep up the good work! Thanks

Kobe is the best player in the NBA. He is ice water in the clutch, he has more credentials, more skills, better defense, and a better shot than LeBron. As far as people saying Kobe isn’t as good as MJ in any aspect of the game… ridiculous. Kobe is just flat out a better ball handler and a better outside shooter. He is an equally good defender.

Any List with Saha in the top 25 is suspect at best, Saying Kobe is Better than Mj, which MJ the one with the Wizards? Parker better than Melo in what aspect? paul Pierece 15? this list is trash Here is a real list
1. If want Kobe ok whatever, what has is won without Shaq
2. LBJ- no one betttter at 23
3. Ducan- consistent
4.Pierece- The best player people love to hate
5. Paul- He had 1 great year, lets calm down, KJ had a simillar run
6. Wade- penalized for coming back to early to help his team repeat
7.KG- The new Scottie Pippen
8. Daron williams- as he goes so goes Utha
9. Melo- The best smallforward in the West
10.AI- could still lead the league in scoring, not a fit with Melo
Im out of time
But Amare cant creat his own shot, Yao cant get out the first round, Howard is one dimensional, Nash couldnt defend some highschool point guards

simmsimma Said,
October 29, 2008 @ 2:33 pm
Lebron is not the best player in the NBA. In fact, until he discovers himself, I wouldn’t even put him in the top 5.
If we are strictly talking potential, then #1 is fine. But he doesn’t have a 3pt shot, his mid-range is sketchy, and he can’t hit a free throw. Hack a Shaq is going to become Hack a James. Anyone watch the game last night? Garnett and Pierce wrapped up his arms so he couldn’t get the shot off and waited for him to choke at the free throw line. And he did.
The kid has unbelievable talent. He can literally draw a foul whenever he wants because of his ability to attack the basket. Unfortunately, until he fixes his shooting it won’t do him any good. And he doesn’t attack the rim every possession, rather settling for a long jumper far too often. The Celtics played him perfectly in the playoffs. Put 4 guys in front of him and let him shoot every 3 he wants. Until he doesn’t allow himself to be so easily defended, he won’t be the best in the game.
Richard Smith III Said,
October 29, 2008 @ 4:12 pm
I don’t have a problem with this list and I can’t argue it but the order I have a slight issue with. I would rank Ginobili higher than some of the guys on here for nothing else but pure ability to kill the last 2 minutes of a game and he’s a better defender than some of the guys before him.
He has to be in the top 5 2 guards in the league, should have gotten atleaast a co-MVP with Duncan for the 2005 Finals because the last game is the only game that mattered and he was steady and kept them going when Duncan had no one else. He also sliced that Piston’s defense.
I like guys you can depend on late in games and he’s one of the best, he can take you off the dribble consistently, hit the three ball consistently, play defense, hard to anticipate, clutch and excepts whatever role the coach asks of him. You can’t penalize him for injury because like Shaq he is there when it matters and it matters in the playoffs.
I could make a case for some others but this example should atleast give my mindset, if guys play defense and have good offense I rank them higher and having Tony ahead of him at this stage is a bit much only because of the things I’ve said before and they play on the same team and down the strtch Manu was the man not Parker, who I think is a top 5 pg.

MikeP Said,

Uh-oh, “Kobe better than MJ in a lot of ways”?
Mr Johnson, you definitely need to come with some justification for that statement. I’ve been following the NBA for 20 years now and seen MJ overwhelm the competition so I even daren’t think that way. MJ didn’t require as much help from his team as Kobe does, his skills were more polished than Kobe’s plus I’ve never seen MJ give in, was it a regular season game or an NBA final one. Neither did you see anybody shut down MJ in a game, he always had it his way. Toss in the effect MJ had on his teammates and you’ll realize Kobe’s never going to be that great.
For the ranking itself I’d go for Kevinn Garnett as no 1. He’s a tremendous player, extremely skilled (can do it all), plays passionately and efficiently on BOTH ends on the floor, never has an off-night (if his scoring’s low then he’ll help the team with defensive presence, assissts etc.), proved that he can be a clutch player if need be, helped his team to the championship, so…
Thank you

And Lebron potentially being the best ever…. with a much improved jumpshot???? No way man. Get him to win at least 3 League MVP’s, at least 1 DPOY award, at least 3 NBA Championships, and maybe, just maybe, I might reconsider… And observing Lebron in his games, and considering the style of play in the NBA in recent years, Lebron will always favor slicing to the hole (and always getting superstar calls from the refs). Lebron still has a ways to go to be better than Kobe. How bout playing some better man defense, how bout knowing when to take over a game if he can, how bout shooting the outside J? How about hitting some clutch free throws!!? Leadership ability? Let’s talk about it. Kobe stayed and played within the system and LEAD his team to the Finals last year while winning the MVP. Regarding #1 / #2.
Last year Kobe was the best all around player. And the year before that too. But this list isn’t about who was best last year, or who has had the best career averages or most rings.
LBJ is getting better every year and this season will be no different.
Kobe is 30 years old now - he won’t put up 81 points again, he wont go on a streak of 40+ ppg anymore. Smartest, maybe. Most respected, probably. Fan favorite, clearly. But I agree with Eddie here.
For the first time, I suspect a maturing and improving LBJ may surpass an aging Kobe (who the last two seasons has been hands down the best in the world) this year in all-around beastliness.

What you meant to say was how many FAT men like Shaq have lasted this long because there have been many big men who played well for a long time, or did you forget about a little skinny guy named Kareem who would have ran cicrles around Shaq at the same age. 3) You’ve got Yao way too high, no way he is better than Piece, Howard, or Iverson. frank - I agree with the championship for LeBron this year. I think it will be against the Lakers, too. Or, the Spurs… and he will redeem himself from the ‘07 Finals.
LeBron is the most complete package in the NBA. He’s my favorite player. But, I think he’ll be a hair under MJ when it’s all said and done.
Let’s not forget what MJ did in his career - stats AND Playoffs. He’s the best ever.
I also think DWade is just as good if not better than Kobe. Look at Shaq’s last year with the Lakers. They lost in the Finals with Payton, Malone, Kobe and Shaq. Then, Shaq goes to Miami, and Miami WINS with DWade, Shaq, Haslem, Payton… and DWade is Finals MVP. How many Finals MVPs does Kobe have? Hmm…
If DWade was healthy and at 75 games or more every year, he’d be in that conversation everyday. Unfortunately, he always had about 10-20 lbs. too much weight on him, which leads to injuries… especially if you’re throwing yourself around like he does. Now that he’s slim(mer), and healthier, I think he’ll show what he can do night in and night out. He was the best scorer on the Olympic team… and steals leader.

The simple fact that Micheal Bennett is creating a list where Dwayne Wade is Ahead of Kobe Bryant is funny. Just simply Funny. In my opinion Kobe Bryant is the most well rounded player in the League. Bar none. Probably the smartest. Next has to be CP3…Lebron is afterwards just on potential and pure beastiness alone but all it is now for Lebron is how hungry he is. He has to want to be a Lock down defender he has to want to practice hitting clutch free throws and shots. That aspect of the game is all about desire and withstanding mental fatigue. I haven’t seen it yet. Plus Kobe scored 81pts. Yeah he loss to the Celtics in the Finals whatever, it happens been there 5 times already. I just dont understand How Dwight Howard is this potential or Hype.. Because he has no Post Moves what so ever..

Lebron James has not achieved what Michael or Kobe have achieved.
As such, he is not even in their league.
He has no rings, baby. He can’t shoot. He can’t do free throws.
He has the #1 body for a small forward.
But Shaq has the #1 body for the center position. And Shaq has 4 rings, baby.
Lebron only has potential.
I see him getting more injured as the years go by.
His window of opportunity is in the next few years, not when he is 28. By then, he will be close to retirement.
Mark my words.
Lebron may look good now. But he isn’t a long-term player like Kobe. Lebron already misses games due to injuries.

I HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS WITH THIS LIST. 1ST OFF KOBE SHOULD EASILY BE #1. U SAID BRON BRON HAS TO IMPROVE HIS JUMPSHOT. I ASK U WAT DOES KOBE HAVE TO IMPROVE??? I NEVER SEEN LEBRON TAKE ANYONE TO THE BOX AND GO TO WORK. LEBRON JUS USES HIS FREAKISH SIZE & SPEED TO DRIVE TO THE HOLE AND DUNK. KOBE’S GAME IS MUCH MORE THAN THAT. AND LEBRON’S FREE THROWS… HORRIBLE….
2ND. D WADE SHOULD BE WAY HIGHER. I HONESTLY THINK HE IS BETTER THAN LEBRON. LEBRON IS MORE DOMINANT B CUZ OF HIS SIZE BUT D WADE’ S GAME IS MUCH MORE COMPLETE. AND DIRK SHOULD BE ON HERE. KICK SHAQ’S WASHED UP ASS OFF. LOL.
MY TOP 10 LIST
1. KOBE
2. D WADE
3. LEBRON
4. KG
5. CP3
6.TIM DUNCAN
7. MELO
8. PAUL PIERCE
9. A.I.

You said you were goona school me….ummmm…i think not.
It’s 1 thing to think Lebron is better than Kobe, but your on this D-Wade is better than Kobe kick…man, get a life. An opinion is fine, but your the only 1 on earth who probably thinks this. Having a finals MVP doesnt mean shit, its all about the amount of rings…and if i remember correctly Kobe has more rings than Lebron and D-Wade combined.
You throw alot of if’s out there, should coulda woulda….it doesnt mean anything….and when the season is over, the lakers will win it all. the Cavs dont have the players to take it.

CAREER STATS:
LeBron James
27.3 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 6.6 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.8 BPG, .467 FG%, .323 3P%, .728 FT%
Kobe Bryant
25.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.6 APG, 1.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG, .453 FG%, .340 3P%, .839 FT%
Kobe is better at 3s and FTs. He’s a better man defender. But, LeBron is better at EVERYTHING ELSE, including scoring, rebounding and passing… otherwise known as basketball. Kobe is clutch? Is that a joke? What have you done for me lately? When was the last time he was clutch? In 2002? LeBron scored 45 in the close-out game IN Boston. Game 7 last years Playoffs. In the Finals Game 6 close-out, Kobe had… 22 pts. 7-22 from the field. LeBron is the best clutch player in the NBA right now (and, that’s what we’re concerned with - the PRESENT). Kobe WAS the best clutch… five years ago.
CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS:
Robert Horry - 7
Steve Kerr - 5
Kobe Bryant - 3
Robert Horry and Steve Kerry must be better than Kobe - they have more rings. Way to set up that one… Number of rings means nothing. In Kobe’s case, no Shaq, no rings. Period.
I love Kobe. LeBron is just better. So is DWade.

Great list, I’d have Ginobili in my top 10, he’s too good to be above #20, plus, he’s a winner. Melo would drop. He does not play a lick of defense and I’ll be suprised if his teams ever win. One of the things that is glairing in your list is that it’s mostly stats driven. Defense isn’t in the equation. Still not sold on LeBron being a top player, there’s just some intangible missing from his game. Ming’s in my 10-20 range, does not bring enough to the table, and constantly hurt. Wade would have to work his way back up the ladder also.

His defense was better in the preseason. I take him over Elton Brand at this point. 25 and 14 for Boozer playing agaist Martin and Nene, 14 and 11 (on 5-14 shooting) against Bosh and O’neal. I know it’s early, but Boozer is sure starting out better.

James is not as talented as players like Pierce, Nash, Garnett, Nowitski. James has a great body, no question about it. But that is the only strength he have. He´s not a good shooter. He´s not good from the foul-line. He can exploed to the rim becuase of his strength and body. James only can slam hard on the breakes…James isn´t that good of defender eihter. And compering him with “Magic” is wrong if you ask me. He don´t have the eyes like Magic or the finess.

It’s pretty hard to rank these guys, but I agree with Eddie for the most part. He is looking at it from an overall standpoint with leadership being included with offensive and defensive talent. With that being said:
1) If you have 3 of the top 20 players you should be winning championships. The Suns have not done so. Shaq is not a top 25 player anymore even he commands a double team. He has no lift at all anymore. Steve Nash could probably lead the league in scoring if they just ran him off screens. Amare isn’t a smart enough basketball player to deserve a top 10 spot, he’s a great athlete but I can re-call the mental mistakes he has made that cost them games against the Spurs during the playoffs. He’s just dumb.
2) Joe Johnson is a top 10 or 15 guy for sure. I would trade him straight for anyone ranked 15 to 25. He is the only other guy in the league with LeBron type skills in a man’s body.
3) Dwight Howard doesn’t impress me. He doesn’t have any go to moves in the post. He’s huge and really athletic but he is going to need another superstar to get anywhere.

and whoever said Lebron is the best clutch player in the NBA is an idiot. For someone who was swept in the finals and can’t even make his free throws, the title of clutch doesn’t fit well. Greatness is defined by winning. That is the whole point of playing sports. Thats what makes Tim Duncan better than Karl Malone and Bill Russell better than everyone who has ever played the game. Winning is the ultimate level of greatness. Lebron has never reached that level yet. Kobe has, 3 times. If it is not all about winning, then why bother playing harder?
MB Said,
October 31, 2008 @ 7:33 pm
Well Kobe’s closest we got in terms of MJ’s style of play. Kobe is the great finisher in the clutch no doubt. If I was going to form a team the first person I would take is LBJ in a heartbeat. Well, Scuz let me get an opportunity to school you. You said LBJ Plays all the minutes and takes all the shots but little did u know Kobe is the leader on that category, dont believe me, do some homework. Kobe’s 3pt% last year was .361 and LBj’s 3pt% last year was .315, wow that really overwhelms me, and for the last five or six years this is his best 3pt%. As for your FG% last year LBJ’s was .484 and in which rear did kobe hit that mark? What kobe got advantage over LBJ is minutes played,3pt% but not by much, FT%, and turnover. As for the clutch performance last year LBJ was the best finisher when it came down to the fourth quarter dire minutes, don’t believe me go check it out. Yes LBJ was the clutch performer last year. As for the rings and MVP, last year kobe won that MVP out of sympathy, in my book that award goes to Chris Paul. Before he could get Lakers over hump he was just whinning, in LBJ’s career he never did that and never disrespected his team mates now my friend that is leadership. Kobe went to the finals with the help of Gasol,Odom and tremendous supporting cast and what does lebron has, nada. Ofcourse kobe has a better midrange but that is not the reason enough for me to take him before LBJ.

I would like to make a case here for Dirk Nowitzki for being higher on the list. I see that Eddie has put him in at Number 12 now. I think the top 12 are all extremely close together and not a lot of difference between them.

6. Kevin Garnett
7. Tim Duncan
8. Chris Bosh
9. Paul Pierce
10. Amare Stoudamire
11. Deron Williams
12. Dwight Howard
Yao would not make my top 12.
Looking at it from a statistics point of view I really like using John Hollinger’s PER and Usg stats.
To quote John: ” Nowitzki’s specialty remains creating high volumes of shots with virtually no negative plays. He led all power forwards in usage rate, but had the seventh-lowest turnover ratio at his position; he was also 11th in TS%. Combining those two and the fact he was ninth at his position in pure point rating, he used his possessions as efficiently as anyone — making it possible for Dallas to have one of the league’s best offenses even while getting middling-at-best production from the supporting cast.”
Last years top 10 PER ratings:
PLAYER PER PLAYER PER
LeBron James, Cavs 29.23
Chris Paul, Hornets 28.39
Amare Stoudemire, Suns 27.61
Kevin Garnett, Celtics 25.30
Dirk Nowitzki, Mavs 24.66
Tim Duncan, Spurs 24.41
Manu Ginobili, Spurs 24.34
Kobe Bryant, Lakers 24.31
Chris Bosh, Raptors 23.88
Chauncey Billups, Pistons 23.61
In the last six years Dirk’s Per was only one time below 23.
In regards to his toughness and him being a choker:
- 50 points game 5 Western Conference Final versus Phoenix 06 (Mavs won)
- Game 7 - Western Conference Semifinal versus Spurs 06. Forces overtime with and1, and blocks TIm Duncan next posession.
- playing with an injury last year the last few games of regular season just so the Mavs can actually make Playoffs
- 3rd place at 2002 World Champs with a German team that is very average (USA finished 6th)
- Euro 2005 semi versus Spain. Leads an inferiour team in all aspects to place in final by hitting game winning shot over Garbajosa.
-
Trade value:
Let’s assume a team would like to trade for an All-Star calibre player. Who would they rather have in their team right now Shaq, Shawn Marion, Chauncey Billups, Allen Iverson or Dirk Nowitzki? As I said the top 12 to me are all pretty even with the younger players obviously having more value then say Tim Duncan due to upside.
Versatility:
While Dirk is not the best defender and that is obviously his weaker point in his game most players in the top 12 have got weak spots. Kobe is probably the most complete player on both ends on the list.
Conclusion:
As I said at the start it is great that everyone here is got there opinion. I do find the language in some comments to be pretty bad. I am from Europe and not American but I always thought that freedom of speech and opinion are qualities that Americans pride themselves on? Hence I do not see a reason why Eddie needs to be called names just because people do not agree with his opinion.

HE’S A PHYSICAL FREAK OF NATURE, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PURE GAME HE’S NOT EVEN IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS KOBE. LEBRON EVEN KNOWS THAT, WHY U CANT U OTHER DUMBASSES SEE THAT. LOL.
AND ABOUT THE KOBE & MJ COMPARISONS. NOBODY SEEMS TO WANNA POINT OUT THAT WHEN MJ PLAYED IN HIS PRIME THERE WASNT NEARLY AS MUCH COMPETITION @ HIS POSITION AS THERE IS NOW. THERE MAGIC & DOMINIQUE…. THATS IT… YEA KOBE DOESNT DOMINATE LIKE MJ, ONLY B CUZ OF MUCH BETTER COMPETITION. SEEING BOTH PLAY I WOULD SAY KOBE, BUT I DONT BELEIVE HE WILL EVER GET THAT RECOGNITION. no way lebron is number 1. he’s just the new guy that the nba is trying to push right now. pretty weak jump shot. for all this talk of him being a team player he shoots about 30% from 3 point range and takes the most shots on the team even though he has good 3 point shooters around him. he plays little to no defense to speak of except for the occasional spectacular block, which makes people think he’s a good defender. he is definitely not clutch. he barrels into guys at the end of the game and gets some breaks, but if the game is on the line i don’t want lebron taking my team’s last shot. when you are honest with yourself and look at it objectively do you really want him to take yours. he wouldn’t even be considered clutch if he didn’t have one good game against the pistons in the playoffs a few years ago. he does have greater talent than kobe overall, but is not currently a better player. not even close. it’s like the michael and magic debate. magic did everything lebron can do now minus the explosiveness, and he did it better. it’s debatable, but not too many people think he was better than michael. same with lebron and kobe. kobe has that competitiveness and will to win that mj had. kobe is the better player and will prove it by adding his 4th championship this year compared to lebron’s 0.

casey - LeBron’s the new guys, huh? Sixth season is new? In pro sports, that makes you a veteran, smart guy.
People like you just lock into that BS argument and won’t let go. He’s actually the best in the NBA. Most experts picked him as preseason MVP. The last few seasons, he’s led his B-team deep into the Playoffs, they ride on his back like no other.
Game 2 - 22pts, 9 rbs, 9asts in … 30 minutes of playing time!!! Man!
And, bluefalcon189, I agree. The Olympics really leveled the playing field. What did we learn (what I’ve known all along)? LeBron is the best all-around player in the world. Kobe is great on both sides of the ball, but he’s a very streaky shooter who can’t “lead” a team. And, DWade is the best shooting guard in the world.

Boston Celtics
San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs
Detroit Pistons
The East’s records aren’t as good as the West’s for the past few seasons. But, the East’s best teams are every bit as good as the West’s.
Anybody who thinks the East is the “weak conference” and posts that is admitting they’re not NBA educated and are just repeating what they’ve heard somewhere.

Eddie you are a great basketball mind, but I have to disagree with your ranking. Kobe is still the top dog,and the gold medal game proved it. On the world’s biggest stage when the game got tight kobe saved team usa. There is really nothing that lebron does better than kobe skill wise. So what he get’s almost two more rebounds. He is three inches taller than kobe. His assists are inflated due to the fact that he has the ball more than kobe does. Lebron at this stage is not even better than wade. Cp3 is also better than lebron. cp3 is the second best player in the league right now. Lebron is more hype than substance. Lebron has never won anything as the first, second or third option. Has anyone else ever been hyped this long after not winning anything? Also name me another star that has ever shot 2-18 in the postseason? Tonight against the hornets he shot his team out of the game. Face it lebron is in his sixth year,he is not going to get any better. If anything once his physical ability starts to breakdown he will not be as effective.

I don’t have a huge problem with this list. Except that Iverson should be in the top 10 I think just because he can dominate a game scoring and creating for players, which Yao, and KG can’t do as well. As far as Nash and Stoudemire. Nash still not as dominant when the playoffs come around. I think he’s more of a product of the Suns original system and Amare. Suns were pretty good with Marbury as PG and a young Amare. And with some of your guys lists putting Melo ahead of Iverson. Please watch the Nuggets game. Iverson is clearly their best player especially in big-game situations. I know he’s the new thing, but as far as clutch it’s not really close. Wade needs to be in the top 5. I’d argue having Pierce and KG around 10-12. KG never wanted the big shots in Minnesota and didn’t do anything until Spreewell and Cassell got there. Not to discredit what he did in Boston, as his Defense was definitely the catalyst for their title run. And like Iverson, Pierce played with trash most of his career, but he’s still not Iverson. As far as Kobe being the best since Jordan…maybe over the last 3-4 years. I think it wasn’t until 2004-05 where he came into his own. He couldn’t take a team on his back in his first 3-4 years into the league. Duncan needs to be pushed back a little, but not much. Being a HUGE Iverson fan, I have no problem with LBJ being #1 as it’s an unbelievable accomplishment getting his supporting cast to the Finals, like Iverson in 2001. Iverson was in the top 5 for about 5 years (00-05) I have no problem with him being in the top 15 now, but his overall game has improved (assists/fg%). I just think there’s a lot of closet racism in the media. And don’t give me he hasn’t won a title shit. The NBA is the one league where having 3 stars or 2 superstars can get you to the finals by itself. And Melo and him aren’t a good fit. And yea, I’ll say it, Melo isn’t a superstar as far as big game performance yet. Hate it all you want. Too one-dimensional right now. Overall, not a bad list.
AIadvocate Said,
November 2, 2008 @ 10:02 pm
I have to say, I have no problem putting Wade or LBJ over Kobe at #1. I think just over the last 2 years Kobe has learned how to play without simply scoring. How many times did he score 40 points while taking 35 shots? How many times did he have 50 points and 0 assists? While the 81 points was amazing. There were plenty of times Iverson had 50 and 8 assists. So when people get caught up with the 81, look at the whole picture. I think over the last 2 years he has earned being in the top 2-3 players in the league. But to say he is hands down the best player in the league since Jordan, is nonsense. And the 3 rings is a bogus argument as well. As someone mentioned earlier, Kerr and Horry have more rings. So does Rick Fox have more than Iverson, guess he is better. If you want to talk about the best players since Jordan, not counting LBJ, or Wade and any after that draft. So from 98-04. I would have Kobe at 4 or 5, to Shaq, Duncan, Iverson. Notice too, how his one on one defending has gone down since he had to carry the team offensively until they got Gasol. And remember about 2-3 years ago how everyone was ripping Kobe (INCLUDING THE FALL IN LINE MEDIA) about being a ONE-dimensional SCORER. Something he learned later than Iverson, Wade, and LeBron. So the Kobe rimjobbing gets a little old. But I will give in that he has earned that #1-3 spot over the last two years. We all know Stern wants Boston and LAL in Finals every year. It is amazing to me once a great player wins a title with another great player, they all of a sudden jump up over 5-10 players simply because of the title, not considering the role they had during the playoffs and their success before or after that other great player/players are gone. We all know you’re in love with the 81. But Wade and LeBron have an argument with Kobe as to who is the best right now. Nash, Nowitzki, Yao, are not beter than Iverson either.

Eddie, i agree with 95% of your list. But i wouldn’t take Caron Butler over Vince Carter. Caron is really good but he’s not a player who can push a team over the top or become a franchise player, that coupled with the fact that he plays in Eddie Jordan’s system where seemingly any wing can succeed should be taken into account. Say what you will about VC, but the man averaged 21 PPG plus career highs in Assists & Rebounds & played his best D basically on one good ankle last season. You say he’s injury prone, but he’s played in more games than Nowitzki,Yao,Boozer,Kobe,Arenas,T-Mac & Wade over the past 4 seasons. He’s proved ALOT in 10 years in the league & 1 year he didn’t make the All-Star team shouldn’t change that.

“LeBron is the most complete package in the NBA.”
Are you kidding me?!?!? C’mon Michael Bennett Lebron James doesn’t even have a package, forget the complete package. If you were to do a pros and cons of his game, you’d be amazed he made the top 25, let alone the top 5. Let’s try.
Pros: Great athletic ability. Can drive to the hoop with speed and/or strength better then anyone. Amazing ability to drive to the hoop and get an And-1. Good/on his way to being great passer.
Cons: Poor free throw shooting. Awful 3pt shooting. Lousy mid-range jumper. Can’t guard the very good-great players. Lacks the leadership to completely take over a game when needed.
I don’t think any of those points are even arguable. Out of players who took as many 3’s as he did last year, he finished second to last. His FT% has not gotten any better since he entered the league. Nor has his mid-range jumper as seen in the Finals against the Spurs and the loss to the Celtics last year in the playoffs. How often is he criticized for giving up the final shot of the game? Or trying to get teammates involved when he needs to dominate to get them back in the game? I’m not saying he is an awful defender, but he can not play man defense against the special players. You can put Kobe on someone and trust he’ll shut them down. Not true with James. He just lacks that talent so far.
He has the best potential in the game. I don’t doubt or argue that. If he stops worrying so much about becoming a world-wide figure and a billionaire and commits his energy to ball, he could become better then Jordan, and I fully believe that. He has that much potential. But he is no where close to being the best yet. As of right now in his career, the only thing I trust him to do is be able to drive to the basket.
If it’s the last play of the game, Lebron is not the person I want with the ball. He is a poor shooter and even if he draws the foul, he is a bad free throw shooter and seems even worse on clutch free throws. The only reason I’d want him on the floor is for his passing ability or to be a decoy. But I don’t want the ball in his hands. He hasn’t developed the necessary talents or trust for that.

Great article Eddie,
I would have probably elevated Paul Pierce to the Top 10 because he is a certified killer and champion now. Offensively, I think he falls below Kobe, Lebron and D Wade, thats it. Plus, he has gotten better defensively, which says alot for a guy his age.
Now, the best player in the league question is a basically a toss up in my opinion. Kobe is the most skilled basketball player in the league, no question. Lebron is the most awesome physical specimen as you mentioned. Both players dominate like no other…..but only one has three rings right now, I would probably give Kobe the edge…but for now I would say they have to share the crown.

Whatever you are smoking Mr Bennett they don’t sell it in my neighborhood, or else I might could get as high as you are with that lofty statement.
Sasha Vujacic? Starting 2 guard? And you are thinking about winning a championship? You are ridiculous Bennett. I don’t think you believe the crap you write yourself.
LeBron James should be great, barring injury. But just because he’s big and athletic and likes to put his head down going to the hole does not make him a great player, well better all-around than Kobe.
The kid is not improving on his skills that much to me. I think he improved more his first few years than he has the last few. He’s been in the league for what 5-6 years now? At least when he first came in he had an excuse for not playing D, not shooting the J well, and making clutch free throws. It’s been 6 years and he hasn’t improved much on any of those qualities. I mean yeah he gets a head of steam and goes to the rack well and he will pass the ball easy enuff but what happens to him during crunch time? He fades away or he falters on the charity stripe.
How bout Stop somebody, be consistent closing out games, get a game with your back to the basket… do something LeBron. With as much talent\money that this kid has and being that the whole team is built around him and him controlling the ball and game how can you compare him to Kobe.
Name one year that Kobe played in a system geared towards him being the offense!!? Not a year where he took it upon himself to break out of the offense and get his but geared towards him like it is\was for Lebron, AI,Nash, T-Mac, Pierce and anyone else you want to compare to Kobe.
Kobe has never been allowed to play basketball in the NBA and be free like the rest of the Superstars he’s being compared too, even with that it’s still obvious that he is the most complete.
And please stop giving these kids all of this credit after only playing for a few years. That’s nothing but blatant disrespect to the Veterans who have been putting it down for years in this league.

erwan– relax!
lebron deserves this one. its almost like the passing of he guard when you KNEW jordan was just better than magic and bird. kobe is actually starting to show being ‘30′. i agree with almost all the picks. i would however try and find a way to squeeze monta ellis
joe johnson
pau gasol
and gerald wallace at the bottom. all serious difference makers. allstars. and all accomplished [except wallace & ellis].

and stop boosting pierce up 5 levels. he won a championship because the lakers had NObody who could play anything consistently and you could never double-team a guy who has garnett on the inside and ray [the real finals MVP allen on the outside]. pierce is great, but only lower level. where did he take the celts before anyone else got there [after antoine walker was out]?

wow. You picked Shaq over Carlos Boozer!? I don’t know about that one. His offense has nose-dived. He doesn’t have the foot-work and touch that gave him a better post-game back in the day. His defense is suspect. He basically just assaults anybody that enters the paint. I think Dikembe still wants to press charges for that NBA Finals against the Lakers. lol. Although, I do suppose Shaq brings some emotional leadership. Maybe, the Diesel may have something new for this season but until then he’s not top 25. He just has a top 25 personality.
I still think Kobe is better than Lebron. Lebron has regressed in some aspects of his game. I know it’s hard to imagine. He doesn’t get his teammates involved as much as when he came into the league. He’s becoming more like the old Kobe. Lebron is strong enough to just leap and run over almost anybody in the league. Kobe was good enough to shoot over them. They both dominated the ball at the expense of their teammates. It is hard for guys to stay motivated or in rhythm when one dude jacks up every shot.
Now, it looks like Kobe is finally trusting his teammates and motivating them as a leader on the floor with his confidence. It seems like he lets his team play as a unit and takes over when someone has to be the man.

What’s your point about where did Pierce take them by himself? Where has any basketball player taken a team by themselves? I can’t remember any player single-handedly taking a team very far. Jordan had Pippen and then Rodman. Shaq had Kobe and vice versa. D-Wade had Shaq. Duncan had Ginobli, Robinson, Parker.
Who in recent history has won anything by themselves? I suppose you could say Lebron took the Cavs to the Eastern Conference champions by himself, but winning an incredibly weak Eastern Conference doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment to me.
Pierce deserves to rank higher because he is a more complete player then almost everyone in the NBA. He isn’t the best in the NBA at anything. Can’t pass like Paul, or hit 3s like Allen, or drive like James, or hit FTs like Nash, or defend like Bryant (though, he showed in the playoffs last year he can be a very good defender if he buckles down and gives it his attention) but he can do everything very well. And because of that, he gets under-rated. Rather then being the master of something, he is more a jack of all trades.

Kobe is not a leader. A great athlete yes a competitior yes but his teams he is succesful with are stacked. As far as this East to West Debate West is way better awesome but Lebron put his team over many west team in the regular season.Kobe goes out there and just plays no regard for his team what so ever.He lead his team in scoring not to the finals.Just ask yourself this question you are playing a pick up game on the playground who would you rather have 6-8 beast with stupid hops or Kobe who will cry for fouls and when he is losing.Lebron can not afford to spend alot of energy on Defense because on his team he is 1st 2nd 3rd scoring option.Kobe has several very dependable other options watch the games Gasol is a monster Bynum is ok Derrick fisher is very good when he gets a chance.Personally I like other players better than both my opinion is as a outside prospective your guys are probably Lakers fans.oh yeah Dirk is a complete 7 foot sissy with no desire to win.Duncan has no emotion in his entire body.Is list slightly different yes but am I gonna harass someone opinion no.

Caron Butler better than T-MAC. Eddie, you were on of the best shooters this league has seen, but I know that you even question yourself with that pick. MANU should be ranked higher than CARMELO. people on this board forget that MANU has been a huge part of 3 NBA championships and led his country to a gold medal. All MELO has ever done is take sucker punches on the new york knicks and then run around the court like a coward.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, as it is clearly evident here.
Personally, I disagree with leaving Dirk out . His skills and influence on his team surpass some of the players on this list.
And, I love LeBron and dislike Kobe, but I admit that Kobe is still the more persuasive player to be ranked # 1, for now.
Omar Aberilla Said,
November 5, 2008 @ 4:00 am
Leaving out Dirk makes this list . I know his MVP award may seem like a long time ago (everybody forgets when you get ousted in the first round), but still. I mean you got players on the list who haven’t been winning a whole lot, and it’s not just about injuries. Yeah Brand can play, but he’s not ready for top 50.
Although I could not have agreed any better with your call on the top three best players in the NBA right now. Chris Paul is a magnificent player who definitely is coming for that no. 1 spot. No doubt, Kobe has a more complete game. However, with the freakish athleticism, superb court vision and team-oriented style of play that LeBron possesses, seals the deal for putting him atop the list. The scary part is that he’s years away from his prime. Still, with the game on the line, there’s no better killer than the Black Mamba.

Eddie - You should write a column about how Matt Barnes is the poor man’s Shawn Marion. And, the Suns have the best team since the Barkley days.
Then, I’ll write how LeBron is still the best and we can all go home and celebrate Obama’s victory. Sound like a plan?

Eddie you are the biggest Kobe hater. It’s funny because on your best night you were a decent ball player but Magic, MJ, Larry Bird, Isaiah Thomas, Jerry West, Clyde Drexler the mount rushmores of basketball have said Kobe is by far the best player in the game. Wake up Eddie but most importantly stop hating and get rid of that flat top I know your a phoenix honk but don’t get mad because Kobe made you and the fans in Phoenix lose half of there hair, it’s our year Kobe is the boss and if that isn’t good enough the guy you picked number 1 says that Kobe is the best player on the planet you seem to be the only one that can’t shake that haterism.

Funny how lebron and Kobe played like absolute pewp in their Finals appearances yet Dirk is the only one to recieve hate.

Why does there need to be a closest to anyone? MJ is MJ. How is Bryant better? You can say 3 pointers but Mike has plenty of 3s in big games. There is nothing Bryant does better. He is no where near Mike. Sometimes I think this Eddie Johnson is the fast Eddie Johnson, who was very good, who is on drugs.

I think people, and coming from Chicago, Eddie, you shold know better, how great Isiah was. Paul has a long way to go. Just remember the numbers he is putting up are the same numbers that KJ and Tim Hardaway put up. KJ and Timmy would kill Paul. How soon we forget. And I know Micheal Ray RIchardson would kill Paul too.

Craig….you are an idiot. To say Mike didnt have great compeition is a joke. Do you remember Sidney Moncrief? Micheal Ray Richardson? Alvin Robertson? Mitch Richmond? I would like to see Bryant against those Pistons teams. Bryant couldnt even handle James Posey and the Celtics defense. The compeition today is not all that. There is no one in the league that is near Bryant so where is his compeition. How is Bryant a better shooter when Mike used to shoot 54 percent from the field? Jordan would average 40 today easy and win a ring. Todays game is so much easier than years ago. Plus Bryant has NEVER BEEN THE MAN ON A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM. Mike was always the main guy. Bryant is a great player, Mike reinvented the game. I MEAN ITS MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!
eddie is buggin Said,
November 7, 2008 @ 10:34 am
The only way James can be the best ever is if he wins like 7 rings. Anything less than how can he be? One ring is not enough. Unless he is Brett Favre who everyone thinks invented football.

eddie is buggin:
while I agree with many of your points, Posey didn’t shut down Bryant in the Finals. Posey actually played the worst defense on Bryant of the people guarding him (Posey, Allen, Pierce, Garnett) Posey plays aggressive in your face D, but his lateral quickness does not match Kobe’s and he got blown too often. Allen, Pierce, Garnett played a step further back and more physical which seemed to limit Bryant more.
Not that I’m just trying to correct you, but it does make a difference to say Bryant got locked down by Posey, then to say Kobe got locked down by 3 future Hall of Famers. Just sayin.
And championships are not the end all be all to say who is great. Bill Wellington has 3 rings. Wilt got 2. Anyone want to argue Bill Wellington is a better 7 footer? No one basketball player can carry a team to a championship. It’s too easy to lock down one player (see James, Bryant in the last two Finals). You need a team of at least 2 good players, preferably 3. (Kobe, Shaq. D-Wade, Shaq. Duncan, Parker, Ginobli. Pierce, Garnett, Allen. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman.)
eddie is buggin Said,

I did indicate Posey and the Celtics. I just remember in the last few games he forced Bryant into bad shots.
Championships are the end all with the great players. Of course role players dont count. If you are considered great you need to have a championship because thats always the greatest achievement. You always hear Magic, Michael and Bird then Isiah then Akeem. Barkley should be but you dont mention him because he has no rings. And he was great

Hey everybody, don’t be mean to Eddie for leaving Dirk off of the list. He’s still mad about how I sliced and diced him during our Mavs/Suns email battle from 06-07 season.
I sunk my reality teeth into his brain and he surely hasn’t forgotten it.
I didn’t realize I had made such an impact. I guess I’m just an awesome dude…or maybe Eddie is just a huge homer.
Did anyone notice how current and former Suns players are the biggest and baddest of all time, but 95% of what is written about Dirk is some worn out rhetoric propaganda garbage that the media used to program NBA fans? Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming have never even gotten out of the first round of the play-offs and no one says anything about it.
You need to stop watching so much TV, Eddie.
