Can MJ make the Cats claw?

Michael Jordan - Icon Sports MediaMichael Jordan is undoubtedly the best player to ever lace ‘em up. Or if you want to count a Bill Russell or a Wilt Chamberlain for that distinct honor, then you have to at least say MJ was the very best player under 6-foot-9 inches.

That being said of his Airness as a player hasn’t necessarily translated to championships in the front office. Jordan tried his hand at being a GM/player with the Washington Wizards. That didn’t work too well. However, Jordan did help Detroit win a championship. His trade of Richard Hamilton for Jerry Stackhouse gave Joe Dumars and the Pistons just what they eventually needed to get over the hump in building a championship caliber team without a superstar.

That fiasco ended rather abruptly and angrily as Wizard owner Abe Pollin offered Jordan 10 million dollars to basically go away; only to have Jordan reportedly refuse in anger.

After a failed attempt to become part owner of the Milwaukee Bucks (owner Senator Herb Kohl is said to have reneged at the last minute), Jordan is now a minority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. For Jordan it’s a homecoming. Although he was born in Brooklyn, New York, Jordan was raised in North Carolina, where he attended high school and college. There he led the Tar Heels to a dramatic NCAA title in 1982 as a freshman.

Jordan’s inaugural draft pick for the Bobcats was small forward Adam Morrison out of Gonzaga. He rewarded Jordan with an 11.8 scoring average while playing in 78 out of a possible 82 games with 23 starts. Not too shabby for a guy that has to shoot himself with insulin while sometimes on the bench (during games, he’s playing in) because he’s diabetic. Besides, he was a rookie so there has to be a learning curve.

But will this year’s version of the Bobcats be better? Bernie Bickerstaff left the coaching sidelines to pry his trade in the front office. So Jordan hired his buddy Sam Vincent to take over the coaching reigns. The Bobcats drafted North Carolina’s 6-9 forward Brandan Wright with the eight overall pick and then subsequently traded him to the Golden State Warriors for athletic and explosive swingman Jason Richardson. That set in motion the type of team the Bobcats were looking to form. With Richardson pairing with budding star Gerald Wallace (who was wisely re-signed over the summer to a long term contract) the Cats’ could soon be clawing their way out of the Lottery.

But that would also hinge on the Bobcat bigs.

Yes, the big guys – Emeka Okafor and Sean May – that always seem to get hurt or injured throughout the course of a season. Neither one has played a full season in the NBA. In fact, May is out of this season coming up after having micro facture surgery recently and is said to be looking at a 6-to-12 month rehab stint.

The Bobcats are laden with swing guys, especially if you count sharpshooter Matt Carroll, who was also signed to a long-term contract. But for the men needed in the 6-9, 6-10 regions, the cupboard is getting barren. There was talk that they were about to sign free agent center Marc Jackson, but he elected to go overseas. Seven-foot one center Primoz Brezec and 6-9 forward Walter Herrmann won’t be scaring too many people.

Perhaps another trade could be in the offing.

The bobcats severly need a big that can bang and play defense. May i suggest Cherokee Parks. He has been waiting in the wings for a quality contract offer. From what i understand he has opened up a tatoo parlor and is in peak physical condition. Pairing him with Omeka its not to unlikely for him to avg between 20-25 points with 12-15 rebounds a game. If Cherokee is not available I would recommend giving a shout to another quality big like Bryant Big country Reeves

I disagree about your thoughts on Walter Hermann — he WILL be scaring some people. He’s actually a really great (offensive & international) player that will have his break out season this year.

Did you watch the end of last season? Hermann and Carroll were not only starting, but they were killin’. Jordan gave Matt Carroll his freedom to shoot, and that he did, averaging close to 20 ppg in his final ten or so games. And, Hermann played very well, making nightly highlight reels with his dunks AND 3 pt shooting.

I think Jordan and Bickerstaff wanted positions 2-4 to be almost indecipherable, and they’re very solid at point (Felton) and great at C (Okafor).

Look for the Bobcats to win around 40 games this year, and possibly make the playoffs in a tough East. They might miss it by a hair, but this year promises to give us a lot of excitement out of the Southeast Conference.

Hey Jerald, nice article! I bleed Piston’s red, white and blue, but I’d rather watch the Bobcats than my adopted home-town Sonics. It’s fun to watch a team without a great many expectations, versus the attachment fans often feel with their favorite teams.

Anyway, what do you think about Esteban Batista in Bobcats orange? He was was just waived by the Celtics. I don’t know if he can adapt his game to the NBA, but he managed a very respectable 20.8 points and 12.4 rebounds in the FIBA games this summer playing for a weak Uruguay team. I understand that he isn’t likely to produce NBA numbers even close to that, but another solid body with some toughness is something the Cats desperately need.

Just a thought. I think I’m going to like watching J-Rich (former Spartan) play without Baron Davis and the rest of the Golden State team. A healthy year as the go-to guy for a new team that desperately needs him could be very exciting.

I think the cats are screwed for a long time. Gerald wallace is good not great , jason richardson is really really good for a guy who lacks basic fundamentals the jury is still out on adam morrison and omeka cant stay healthy. I would hope for mj sake he can put together a 45 win team in the eastern confrence but i dont think he has it in him. Not because he doesnt want to win its because he won as a player with players like will purdue and jed buschler so he thinks its okay to draft players like kwame brown because he thinks its possible to win with bad talent.

sometimes I wonder about the sanity of the average NBA fan. Cherokee Parks!? Big Country Reeves. Both of which haven’t played in the NBA in 2 and 3 years respectively. Both of which would scoff if even asked because they are enjoying life. Both of which an NBA team would be paying the vet’s 1.2 million to play 10-15 unpreductive minutes a game and cheer. Great idea. It is not a wonder why incompetant NBA owners, personnel and coaches can get away with puuting an inferior product on the court yet continue to count on fans for their source of siphoning cash to accomidate the contracts of players who care about their production about as much as they care about their mastery of basketball fundamentals. Cherokee Parks or Big Country Reeves…you’d make a great GM.

Brantly - You just don’t know when you can grab talent. Just because Amare’s a tough guy doesn’t mean he’s the best center around the league. And if you analyze the center positions properly, you’d notice that nobody beats Pat Burke. Maybe Yao Ming but surely not Amare. D’Antoni is a stupid coach and doesn’t let Pat Burke have enough minutes to show his skills. You know Brantly, it’s just funny how “fans” or should I say “analysts” like you just follows what other people usually say. I’m sure once the Bobcats get Pat Burke, it would be a damn steal and they’d go straight to the top.

Guys lets settle down…….the Bobcats arent in the worst of troubles, they have a solid CENTER in Emeka Okafor and while the rest of the league is overflowing with power forwards (probably the position with the most talent in the league) they are one of the only teams lacking talent at that position. Hell consider that half the NBA has 2 starting PF’s like Memphis. Supply is up and demand is down for the position so it wouldnt be overly difficult to pick up a balanced but slightly offensive power forward to match with Okafor like say Pat Burke…..bahahaha. Seriuosly though a Charlie Villanueva, Donyell Marshall, Kris Humphries, David Lee, Ike Diogu, Andray Blatche, Stromile Swift, Tim Thomas, Al Harrington, Ronnie Turiaf, or Vladimir Radmanovic should be among the considered. Also consider that many teams are looking for talent and/or potential in the swingman positions. You dont need to be exec of the year to make some of these trades…..

I actually like the idea of signing Esteban Batista to a minimum contract. I went to the Bobcats/Heat game last weekend and was not impressed with the reserve bigs that Charlotte offered. Jameel Watkins fouled out in less than 20 minutes; we need someone off the bench who can contribute more than foul shots for the other team.

Why is Jordan working in the front office?

The guy drafted Kwame Brown! He should be banned from analyzing basketball talent. The Cats need to move this guy out of a decision making position as soon as possible.

I agree with edgar that there is some good (not great )players out there that can be had with the right trade combo.

He would of looked okay with the Bobcats.Bobcats roster just slowly keeps improving and improving

I second brian boitono. They really should consider signing Bryant “Big Country” Reeves or Cheeroke Parks to a long term contract. Another big man to watch out for is Yinka Dare. He has been getting in great shape and figures to be one of hte elite big men in the league if he elects to return. Any of these guys would be a great addition to any team and I would expect each of them to be fully capable of averaging 20-10 a game and making AT LEAST the all nba third team.

Health, like many teams, is what their season depends on. They are likely to get similar numbers from Morrison, if his minutes are about the same. Good shooting from Carrol could be expected as well. The likelihood of Richardson and Okafor playing a full 82 games, well, lets not put all our ponies in one pen on that one.

I still don’t know which is better, the thought that Olowakandi may not be a bust (I mean, it is pretty damn obvious for a few years now that he is), or with some more burn Pat Burke has a chance to be better than a first NBA team talent. Wow.

Their best bet for MJ to even sniff another championship in his lfietime is to hit the lottery for another year, swoop up another quality big. Hat tip to the fellow who mentioned Hibbert.

marc jackson does have talent , but he has bounced across the league ever since his good year in golden state. they could have used him, but there’s got to be a reason he doesn’t have a regular spot on someone’s roster.
maybe this is actually a good non-move in disguise. they are one or two active bigs/bangers away from the playoffs. as it stands they are one of my favorite teams to watch, hermann especially. i was kidding with the fortson mention earlier but he might be a good fit if he is available.

  43. russellbuzz Said,

Thanks, but no thanks in regards to Fortson. He hasn’t been a contributor for years for a reason. One thing Charlotte doesn’t need is an undersized power forward with good rebounding skills but minimal offensive skills. Also, he’s never fully healthy and is way overpaid. He also has a rep as a thug that doesn’t fit in with Charlotte’s team mentality. He’s known as a locker room cancer. I’d rather stick with Jared Dudley who is an outstanding competitor and has big heart.

Call me a dreamer or label me insane but check this. WHAT IF…
Jordan called Kobe (to cast a vision), then called Jerry & Mitch offering the ‘Stache, J-Rich, May & Othella (to get the money right) maybe toss in some cash? Say the Lakers and Kobe agree to the deal. Then Charlotte trots out a starting crew of.

    Brezec
    Okafor
    Wallace
    Kobe
    Felton

    Bench:
    CJ Watson, McInnis
    Carroll, Dudley, Anderson
    Hermann, Davidson
    Watkins
Hollins, and one other random 7 footer

With Wallace’s complimentary style of play and Okafor having to do nothing more than defend and rebound, this team could win the East.

Check the match ups and role players and see if you agree.

Of course this is totally impossible since Kobe would never play under Jordan’s shadow that way and it’s Charlotte. It ain’t big enough for a player of Kobe’s magnitude.

    Back to reality.

  46. Rashidi Said,

    October 18, 2007 @ 6:22 pm

Herrmann is a tough call. He is really the ultimate tweener. He can shoot the lights out which you like from a SF, but he has terrible ball skills. In all honesty I might have a better left hand than him, which is saying something. He is very strong, and coupled with his size he could get away with playing PF, but he isn’t a great rebounder and has no post game. He fits with the running concept the rest of the team has now, but what happens when that gets taken away?

Also concerning is Vincent would prefer to play with a traditional lineup that would have Okafor at PF (where he hurts the offense), and play with a bigger guy at C. The Bobcats don’t have this other big guy. They have Primoz Brezec and Ryan Hollins.

The Cats will need to address this via free agency, and these are the available guys.

Chris Webber - Only wants to play for Detroit but would be the best option.

Earl Boykins - Not a big, but Jeff McInnis won’t cut it as the only backup point either. PF/C should be their top priority though.

Michael Sweetney - Honestly he isn’t too different from Sean May, and he’d get the minutes he’d need to develop a bit, although I’d have some concerns about his running game if he’s out of shape. In shape, he is actually surprisingly quick.

Danny Fortson - Thug but wouldn’t be a bad thing on this team. I’d rather have Sweetney’s potential and offense, not to mention you can’t depend on a guy who could get suspended at any time.

Alan Henderson - Could be had for minimum if he still wants to play.

Maurice Taylor - Same here, not too different from Marc Jackson who they were considering. Probably the best right-now fit in terms of ability and cost.

Michael Olowokandi - Terrible player but would offer some shot blocking beyond Okafor.

Kelvin Cato - I’d prefer Cato to Kandi, for work ethic/turnover purposes.

Chris Taft - Young and has a lot of potential, not sure if he’s recovered from the injury that sidelined him last year though.

Slava Medvedenko - Probably not a good fit.

Esteban Batista - Recently cut but he’s not that good either.

    Vitaly Potapenko - Center depth

Othella Harrington has 2.3 million left on his deal and could end up being a medical retirement or potential buyout, which is attractive to teams with too many players and too few roster spots.

Houston’s Jackie Butler is a realistic trade target.

Miami # 2 in the East?

    Am I missing something?

Did they improve that much over the summer? Will Fat Shaq be that much better this year? When & where did Antoine Walker find motivation? Isn’t Mourning on the verge of retiring? Is that the same Anfernee Hardaway that had a career ending knee injury OVER a decade ago? Is that the same Smush Parker that stunk it up with the Lakers last year? Is that Jason Williams shadow I see on the court?

I don’t know who is worse off dwyane wade or kobe.

Kobe has a bunch of young unmotivated players around him. Wade has a bunch of old wash up players around him. Both teams are well over the salary cap (Shaq will still get 20 mil EACH of the next three seasons, Kwame Brown is getting 9 mil this season!). Both teams are in the rebuilding mode (someone please let Pat Riley know before he tries to sign Allan Houstan, this is not 1999!).

At least wade has time on his hands, unless his leg injuries becoming nagging.

After three years as a season ticket holder, I am glad I gave them up. Got comps for the two games against the Hawks, the ‘Cats looked real lame. Playoffs? Don’t believe the hype, fun to watch depends on who they’re playing. They will still be an expansion team for years to come. It will take longer than the four years it took the Hornets to make the playoffs and create a buzz.

anthony i put heat number 2 because, i think shaq’s agony of a divorce will make him return to old form at least for the year, wade will be back,
and they will make a trade by feb

there off season moves have sucked, they drafted nbdl player in d.cook,a.walker is out of shape, haslem has reached his pick,as for injured jwill, mourning is gettting old,and wade much find new moves, since the league was torchered by his penetration 2 years ago,
i see 2 top 12 players in the league still in dwade&oneal, who are unselfish and ready to turn around

its good to see someone write about the ‘cats, obviously it had to involve MJ-he wownt be getting us wins in the court, He merley makes trades and drafts players, Its going to come down more to Vincent and his coaching staff not Jordan.

Herrmann is a natural SF not a PF if he can regain last years form he will scare defences as for Primoz expect this to be his last year in the NBA. If he can regain any of 2005-2006 back Charlotte will be a playoff team.

    djhott,

    wade is solid.

I am just not sold on shaq. it may take a divorce to motivate him, but I saw him slow down last year. I definitely expect him to show flashes of his old self here and there, maybe for even a month long stretch, but I don’t see him doing it all year.

I don’t see the heat having much trade value either. who do you think they would or could trade?

  64. djhott Said,

anthony i think shaq just had a mental let down last year that lot of people dont talk about, and now he will comeback and average 20pts 10rebs,and be a big present, but yea they have no trade value, at all,
    they have 2 allstars-wade,shaq
jwill-because he makes 8mil in the end of a contract, may be interesting,
but he is said to be better than smush, like everyone expected, but i would have to say that miami has the worst roleplayers of anyteam, take, shaq, and wade away, then they couldnt beat-last years florida gators ncaa team, but since i still like them a trade that may work, at the best
would be-jwill ,there arent any, all the players that should be traded have already left, and nobody would get anything for the heat scrubs,
but if i had to make a trade i guess, i would say-jwill,d.cook,and wayne simien-thats about 12 mil 8 coming off next year with jwill, to laclippers
for freeagent of next year, corey maggette8mil, and dan dickau

miami gets that 3rd player they need, who isnt overpaid,or overrated, injury prone in maggette

    new heat
    g-s.parker g-d.dickau
    g-d.wade g-p.hardaway
    f-c.maggette f-d.wright
    f-u.haslem f-a.walker
    c-shaq c-a.mourning

because, the clippers arent going to make the playoffs, and maggette will bolt anyway-with the trade the clippers loose, but add simien inside, to help the injury of brand, and they get a young guy to develop in cook-
so what they save about 4mil, but miami totally wins, and if they could pull of this trade, they would really be a number 1or 2 seed in the east, not just from a fans standpoint, im out like the mavs in the 1st rd

and there is no way-even tho this trade would help both teams, that la and phoenix make a kobe, for s.marion, barbosa trade

and what can charlotte do now that morrison is hurt, no morrison,no sean may, starters play 40mpg now
and can u imagine, phoenix-if they got kobe

    g-s.nash g-m.banks
    g-k.bryant g-d.strawberry
    f-r.bell f-g.hill
    f-boris diaw f-free agent
    c-a.stodemirec-b.skinner

3all nba 1st teamers,2allnba1stteam defenders, kobe, bell, hall of famer of the bench in g-hill,and diaw gets to start, team is still missing a real center, but a athletic pf all nba in stoudemire, to go with the 2best guards in the 2000,era-and the defender shooter in bell, is enough to pass, the spurs, and the celtics in the championship

and rajon rhondo, will be nice for the c’s

The Bobcats had something going for them this season…up until the last month.

Going into the ‘07-’08 training camp, the Charlotte Bobcats were already lacking in depth at the 4 and 5 and still need a decent backup PG. But, things got worse.

Ever-tubby-and-injured-but-promising Sean May is out for the season with microfracture surgery. Disappointing (to those who were blind) rookie Adam Morrison out for the season with a torn ACL. Sam Vincent’s off/def identity not shaping up nicely (time will tell, however, for it is the preseason).

I’m expecting the Bob’s to perform worse this year. Okafor just isn’t improving as much as they’d like…and there’s really no one else at the 4 & 5 besides the 2004 draft pick. That leaves a humongous defensive liability…G-Wall can’t do it all!

The performances of the resigned Hermann and Carroll are suspect as well…for the very reason that they performed well during a contract year. However, I am hopeful that these 1-dimensional sharpshooters will continue their hot streak.

It’s depressing to see the gloom outlook for what was such a promising team. The risky selection of Sam Vincent as head coach, followed by no improvement to weaknesses in PF/C and PG depths, as well as current injuries to key players, leave me feeling that this team won’t improve for a while…nor will MJ’s reputation as a great player but poor exec.

Adam morrison is out for the year? Things just got tougher for the Bobcats and jordan.

I think Sterling would fire Dunleavy before he lets Maggatte get away. However, if Elgin Baylor (worst general manager in sports franchise history) has a say he might trade Maggatte straight up for the washed up J. Will.

Neither Jerry or Jim Buss would ever trade Kobe to Phoenix. Not in the same division, not to the Suns.

Seriously, you guys need to shut up and understand one thing. Pat Burke is the best center in the league, well maybe Yao is better but the point is, he’s way better than Amare who everyone is raving about. Get Pat Burke and give him the starting job (unlike D’Antoni) and you got yourself a championship team with a high salary cap.

It’s really funny how you guys just don’t understand talent and yet you feel that your opinions are right. Pathetic.

You know, after thinking for a while, I kind of agree with analyst about the Pat Burke thing. Sure, he may not be the best center around the league, STILL not better than Amare in my opinion, but he’s got talent. I’ve watched my Phoenix Suns’ Greatest Games DVD and I must say, in one of those games, he was impressive. I think it was on 2006 against the Miami Heat, the guy scored like 12 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, 2 blocks in just 10 minutes of action, including 8 in OT, the Suns won that game with Nash struggling in the field and Amare injured. Pat Burke totally stepped up and was a big reason for this victory. Hey, his job wasn’t easy, he had Shaq guarding him in his 10 minutes of action. This is what I call potential, unlike the one they say that Bynum has.

Samuel Dalembert, Brandon Haywood. Emka could stay healthy and avg. a double double every night if he didn’t have to pick up the slack for these no defense centers. NO MORE SOFT NON-DEFENSIVE CENTERS. Also I would like to see the bobcats drop a lot of the dead wieght. They seem to have gotten a big name with J-Rich, now lets follow Detroit’s lead and get quality role player’s to come off the bench. A veteran back up for Felton could help relieve the minuets as well as offer some guidance, I hope MJ is grooming this kid because his potential is through the roof. Sean May needs to stop following the Grant Hill training program. but it is too early to trade him or morrison, they are two quality role players.

Trade Block -Davidson, Dudley, Herman, Hollins, McInnis,Knight

Get a Defensive Center, A Defensive PF for Reserve, A quality back up PG/SG and we are playoff bound.
