Shooting for a comeback

Julius Hodge - Icon Sports MediaHi everybody,

This is Julius Hodge, ACC Player of the Year in 2004 and former member of the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks. I will be blogging here at HoopsHype.com all through the summer about my experiences as a free agent. Hope you enjoy it.

As some of you may already know, I’m now trying to get back in the NBA and have been working out with the Nets the last three months in order to prove that I belong in the league. I know there are another couple of teams that are interested, but I’m really liking the situation here in New Jersey. All these weeks with the Nets, I really think they have been very benefitial to me. The coaching staff is great and my guy Kiki Vandeweghe is helping me a lot. My jump shot, which is probably the weakest part of my game, has gotten a lot better. I’ve probably never worked as much or as hard any other time in my career.

I didn’t have much much success (or playing time for that matter) in my first two years in the NBA with Denver and Milwaukee. But I’m not bitter about it. It was hard at the beginning, I’ll admit that. You get from always being the main guy to not playing much and that’s a hard pill to swallow. But all in all, it was a learning experience. And besides, when you’re close to death, as it was my case with the shooting incident, it changes your whole perspective. You’re grateful about anything that’s given to you. You appreciate it’s a blessing just to get a chance to make a living playing basketball.

Physically, the shooting incident was a setback. Mentally, though, it was an inflection point. I believe I’m a better person now. More humble, more generous… I think not only I can help a team on the floor, but also in the locker room.

I know I have offers from teams overseas, but at this point… It’s just the NBA for me. There’s no such thing as a backup plan for me because I’m so focused in getting a job in the league right now. It’s not that my experience abroad wasn’t good. I played in Australia last season and I enjoyed it. It was pretty much my first time outside of the States and I had some adjustments to make, but life was good there. I was actually leading my team on the court and loved to be The Man again. Away from the court, it was nice also. It was 100 degrees pretty much every day, always with your shades on… Besides, I didn’t have to go through the language barrier most American players abroad have to.

Even though FIBA ball is fine, like I said my goal is the NBA. I can be a third point guard, a defensive stopper… Really, I can be an anything guy. And with all the adversity I have had to go through before, I can guarantee I’ll be a good guy anywhere I am.

Got to keep working out. Talk to you next week.

Bye!

    Good luck Julius,

Keep working hard, and you’ll find a place in the NBA. I am a Nuggets fan and have followed your career; I hope you find success in NJ, but looking at the Nuggets PG situation, they could use someone with your length and defense.

I enjoy your four years college games, and want to watch more of you wearing a NBA shirt. Just look at Josh howard (I really like to compare you two, I believe that You are better than him) you have to be under a right coach at a right time.

I remember watching you back when you were at State. I always thought you had the talent to do whatever you wanted. Sometimes it would be frustrating to watch you because I knew you had so much potential and sometimes you didn’t live up to it. I’m glad you’ve got your life back in order and I hope you live your NBA dream again. Good luck and God bless Julius.

Julius, I’m old enough to be around for a lot of State years. You rank only behind Thompson and maybe tie with Monroe in ranking my favorite State players. I still love to watch the clip against UCONN where you drive and score(and 1). Awesome. Your quotes when you were at State were priceless. Good luck with your NBA quest. I would be thrilled to see you play again.

You already know what I’m going to say:
“With God, All things are possible!” Matthew 19:26
Just continue to pray and thank God for his many blessings that he has given you thus far. Seek first the kingdom of God, and all his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Whatever you want or need, God’s got it. Remember, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Matthew 7:7

Michaela and I love you and know how hard you’re working to achieve your dream. Keep the faith and believe that you have the victory. Know that it is already done!

    Just for a little inspiration….

“Though darkness looms within my heart, the Lord declares His power,
A mighty fortress in my storm, while in this midnight hour.
The darkest night’s before the dawn, the clock is soon to strike,
And daybreak brings a miracle to change my broken life.
For hope is just a prayer away; my answer’s coming soon,
My strength is in my God above, Who hung the stars and moon.
If we didn’t sometimes suffer and endure some tribulation,
We’d never put our faith to work, a gift of our salvation.
For it’s eleven fifty-five and all I see are clouds,
Clouds of darkness pouring rain upon this storm of doubt.
But even in the darkness I can see a ray of hope,
For night gives way to morning and the sun is soon to show.
So I will follow word by word the truths within the Bible,
God’s promises will come to pass to overcome these trials.
What do I have to lose today for everything I’ve tried,
Will never work without the Lord, Who wants to be My Guide.
It seems that things are getting worse while I must sit and wait,
But Jesus will arrive on time, for He is never late.
You may be in a midnight hour, praying while you’re hurting,
Don’t try to bear this by yourself; the Lord desires your burden.
And just as there’s a midnight, you can know there is a dawn,
The night won’t last forever, then your trial will be gone.
For life is like a circle and we all must go around,
Sometimes we walk on rocky roads that lead to stable ground.
But when the midnight passes and the sun begins to rise,
We’ll understand how faith in God has brought us through our night.
For it’s the midnight hours, not the brightness of the day,
That gives us testimonies while it teaches us of faith.”
    ~Norma E.Wright

Your hard work will pay off in the end. God knows your heart and remeber even in your darkest hour, he is there with you. Much love!

Julius Hodge, I had class with you in 2005, COM 3 something, I really don’t remember, but we did an exercise on the first day of class where we had to introduce the person next to us; you were my partner. Anyways, I saw you throw one down on the Jazz in summer league play and your first step looks a lot better. You also seem more explosive to the hoop and seem to be getting off the ground as fast as ever. What do I know anyways, but I wish you all the best man. Wolfpack BB has not been the same since you left. There has been many a time that I have wished that we could have you back! Anyways, you have a bunch of supporters back here in Carolina that are wishing the best for you. Regarding Julius Hodge:
For people that don’t know about his off the court style, let me say this; Julius Hodge is the classiest kid I have ever met in all my days as a Wolfpack fan. He took the time to talk to my son at an autograph session one night before a football game. My son was so thrilled that to this day, he is still his favorite player of all time. He cried like crazy during Julius’s last game. (He was 8 at the time) What a great role model you are my man. Thank you for being you. You will make it in the League, I have no doubt. You deserve it.

I have been an NC State fan for 30 plus years. I have never wanted anyone to make it in the NBA more than you. I have tried to keep up with you since your being drafted in the NBA. It has been somewhat difficult in the last year and a half. I have followed ACC basketball for many years. There have been great players but only two players have stood out in the last 30 years that had the real fire. You were one of them. No! Michael Jordan was not the other guy. How do join you fan club?

    Hey man,

Congrats on making the Nets squad…looks like a good young movement out there. The NBA needs the nets to be good so they can move to Brooklyn and represent!
Keep posting if you can as you progress through the year; it’s been a real experience following you so far!
I think the other pg’s will be good mentors as their fundamentals seem strong…and you can diversify too, maybe backup Vince?

    Julius Dodge,

This in on behalf of most Adelaide supporters.
This probably wont last on the site long as my last comments were deleted as quickly as you left the 6ers!! If you loved Adelaide so much, why leave because of your pay being 4 days late?? Then we pay you up in full for the rest of the season and still a now show. I have read the paper yeah and you go on about your love of Adelaide and how you don’t want to leave yet the moment your pay is late you leave. Yeah you played 2 more games and yeah we lost one of them to the bunny’s of the league due the ongoing disruption of your pay dispute. You were an inspiration and now you have turned out to be nothing more than a joke!! No one else has been paid in full for the rest of the season. The guy commented before on naming his Boxmation after you sure got it right you are a “Dog!!” why let down your teammates and the thousands of fans following you because of a late payment??
Once you had been paid in full why did you not just get on with things.
Bring on Grizzard because you might have aspirations of playing in the NBA but obviously you don’t have the right attitude. Why not front the media and explain yourself?? My mates and many other people have been to every game since you have arrived admiring your hard work and slick skills and it all turn out like this. Myself and a mate after reading that you planned on taking the 6ers to the championship we went and spent $100 on a bet each because we thought you were the real deal. we generally don’t go spending are hard earned money on outrages bets on teams paying $15 but we thought you were the real deal :-(
You don’t see Brett Maher or Ballinger walking out and leaving the team because of pay disputes!! And levae the team wondering were the hell you are before the game. You always said money was not an issue and you played for the love of the game but clearly that was a crock of shit!!
It’s a sad week for basketball and just when we thought you were putting it back on the map!!

    A extremely disappointed Adelaide

So sad to see you leave Julius, you got me excited over Australian basketball again, for the first time in a long time.

I can vouch for the fact that Adelaide 36ers are poor businessmen, I’ve been trying to buy a $140 Julius Hodge top but their merchandise people don’t return calls!!!
