The all-time snub list
You know it is close to NBA All-Star time of year when the word “snub” can’t be ignored on the airwaves, the sports pages or the web. Every year there is more talk about who didn’t make the All-Star team than who did. This year Deron Williams’ long All-Star wait is over, but there is debate over whether David Lee or Josh Smith or Chris Kaman should be making appearances (it would have helped in the “fans” hadn’t deemed Allen Iverson and Kevin Garnett All-Star material this year). So in that vein, HoopsHype presents to you the ten best NBA players of all-time who never made an All-Star appearance.
10. Andre Miller
As point guards go, Andre Miller is as consistent as they come. No doubt he should have made the All-Star team in 2002, when he led the NBA in assists (10.9 per) while also putting up 17 points and five boards per outing.
9. Sam Perkins
For all the stat geeks out there, Sleepy Sam Perkins has the highest career Win Share of any non-All-Star player in NBA history. He had an extremely productive and steady 17-year NBA career, but no All-Star appearances dot his resume.
8. Eddie Johnson
No, Eddie Johnson didn’t make this list only because he is a HoopsHype contributor (but that definitely didn’t hurt his cause). EJ scored the most points in NBA history by a non-All-Star and was the League’s Sixth Man of the Year in 1989. Just so he doesn’t feel bad, we’ll name him HoopsHype’s All-Star!
7. Al Cervi
Al Cervi is truly an anomaly – a Hall of Fame player who never made an All-Star team (similar to Drazen Petrovic). One of pro basketball’s pioneers, Cervi was a league MVP and All-League performer but suffered from the fact that the All-Star Game wasn’t dreamed up until late in his career.
6. Phil Ford
A North Carolina basketball legend, Phil Ford burst onto the NBA scene his rookie year in 1979, winning Rookie of the Year, making 2nd Team All-NBA and placing eighth in MVP voting. But he’s no All-Star.
5. Marcus Camby
It might be preached that defense wins games, but it sure doesn’t gain you much in the way of personal accolades. Marcus Camby has been one of the NBA’s best defenders for years now (he’s got a Defensive Player of the Year award to prove it) and normally averages a double-double, yet he’s 0-14 in his attempts to make it into February’s All-Star festivities.
4. Byron Scott
It’s really surprising that Byron Scott didn’t make at least one All-Star team. When you think of the powerhouse Lakers teams in the 1980s, he is one of the first names that come to mind. In fact, in their 1988 championship year, Scott led the team in scoring – not Kareem or Worthy or Magic.
3. Drazen Petrovic
No doubt Drazen Petrovic had some All-Star appearances waiting in his future if his life hadn’t been tragically cut short at the age of 28. Still, his last year in the NBA he averaged over 22 points a game and made 3rd Team All-NBA, yet he wasn’t deemed All-Star material.
2. Cedric Maxwell
Cedric Maxwell is proof that having famous teammates can hurt your All-Star chances. On a star-studded Celtics team, Cornbread put up some solid numbers, including one year of 19 points and 10 boards a game, yet no All-Star nod. He is the only Finals MVP (1981) in NBA history to not make an All-Star appearance.
1. Rod Strickland
It is mind-boggling that Rod Strickland never made an All-Star team. During his peak, he reeled off five-straight seasons of about 18 points, nine assists and five boards a night. In 1998, he led the League in assists (10.5 per) and put in 18 points and five boards a game, which was good enough to earn him 2nd Team All-League honors.

In their careers? Are you joking? Their career stats are almost identical.
So why is Horford an All-star and not David Lee?
1) DEFENSE. Horford can protect the rim and defend while Lee cannot.
2) Hawks are in 2nd place in the EC and at 30-15 and have the 2nd-3rd best record in the league.
How are the high-scoring and no defense Knicks doing?
Nothing like a winning record and playing defense to give a player the nod!

Yes KG has no business on the all-star team (Rashard Lewis made that clear when he caught KG stutta steppin.)
But lets not forget the real culprit in all of this, thanks to the fans. Amar’e Stoudemire has no business starting in the All-Star game, let alone at Center. He’s a natural PF. He has never been able to average double digit rebounds, another reason to not give him C eligibility. The Suns have been struggling as of late, although their win against the Mavs was quite impressive (And Amar’e was on the bench in the 4th, so All-Star accolades go to non-closers?) Hell, he had ONE rebound. That is pathetic, especially going up against a good team in the West, with a chance to prove how strong your team is and how great you are individually.
Frankly, he should have been snubbed, allowing Gasol to start and Kaman to get reserve. Good for Z-Bo.

If this is your list of all star snubs, doesn’t this kind of serve to show they’ve done a pretty damn good job of picking all stars? Rod Strickland? Sam Perkins? Eddie Johnson? These are all guys with very good careers, but to be an all star, you generally have to be one of the two best players on a winning team, and I can’t say that any of the guys on this list really qualified.
Jan Said,

I was a huge fan of Corey Maggette for years when he was with the Clippers. He had 3 +20 ppg season, including a 22ppg, 6rpg season in 04-05 and now has onother one with the Warriors. I liked his strength, dunks and his rebounding in the clippers days very much but in the end the Clippers have naver been good enough to earn him a ASG spot. Another problem for him is that he never played more than 75 games a season and and is kind of injury prone what’s never good (if our not knee mac and play along with yao on the same team…). So Corey he was my favorite non all star player for many years.
Camby is another poor dude but he had some injury problems too in his career.
I have a feeling that Jeff Green could top this list in a few years even if I hope he’ll be an all star someday - he’s my favorite player in the league right now. He’s doing EVERYTHING very well, has a very high basketball iq, is athletically the most underrated player in the league in my opinion and reminds my a lot of Scotty Pippen but in a PF body but does nothing extraordinary well (not yet!!!). He is pulling away alot of pressure away from KD, especially on the defensive end. But if the Thunder continue to raise their level he could be the 2nd OKC guy making the all star team one day because I think Russel Westbrook has very very hard competition in the West at the Point Guard Spot…

Get real “T”, Andre Miller isn’t anywhere near as good as Billups. Were the Pistons contenders before Billups got there? No. Have they been contenders since he left? No. Were the Nuggets contenders before Billups got there? No. Have the Nuggets been contenders since Billups arrival? Yes. Just this year alone Denver is 3-5 without Billups this year, and he’s quietly averaging the most points per game of his career.
Since playing in Minnesota, Billups has always been the better scorer, better defender, better player, and most importantly, Billups is a winner, something Andre Miller really isn’t. You can point to the guys around them, but Andre Miller was on nearly the same Denver team three years ago accomplishing nothing, before getting shipped off FOR Iverson. Conversely, Billups was a steal when Denver got rid of Iverson, as Joe Dumars continues to build his championship team in Colorado.
Should Miller have been an all-star at some point, definitely, but to suggest he’s as good as a man whose been to SEVEN straight conference finals, and won the Finals MVP is just asinine.

How about Dennis Rodman?
Btw, Jalen Rose was good when he played for the nuggets and pacers. He was one of the reason that the pacers had a shot with the lakers in the finals.
Personally I think the all-star system wasn’t that good though. They want the fans to choose players that they want to see in a game. Then why don’t they let them choose the reserve too? It’s like the starting five is just a show, and the reserve is the real all-star. It’s just a show all in all so might well let the fans choose everyone.

It is always a shame when guys like Barros, Abdur-Rahim or Magloire make it, while other, way better - don’t.
My list of those who never made it…
1. Derek Harper - should be an AS at least in 87
2. Sam Perkins - always behind Hakeem, David and Karl
3. Rod Strikland - 1998: 18 ppg, 10 apg, 5 rpg, 0.512 team record - if this was not enough, then what was ?
4. Byron Scott - same as Perkins - always behind Magic, Porter and Stockton
5. Robert Horry - never had a season to be individually even close to ASG, but was a silent hero of 3 different championship teams and scored a bunch of clutch shots in the playoffs
6. Eddie Johnson - 84 and 85 he was close, but actually didn’t deserved it; anyway, he did scored over 19 thousand points in his career
7. Ron Harper - deserved it in 87, 89 and 90 while being one of NBA top scorers in Cleveland; when winning 3 rings for Bulls, his input was insufficient to be voted
8. Jerome Kersey - a solid starter for solid Blazers, deserved a nod in 88-90,
9. Michael Cooper - Horry-like case; great defender, crucial element of THAT Lakers, a bunch of team achievements, but he actually never was good enough to be an AS
10. Mychal Thompson - unbelievable he hasn’t made it even once between 81 and 84, starting for over-0.500 Blazers and recording over 15 ppg, 8 rpg ad 3 apg

“in what world is broy better than monta?”
How about the REAL world? Roy is much more efficient than Monta, for one. His %s are 48-35-79, compared to Monta’s 46-29-75, and Roy scores 23 PPG on 17 FGA, while Ellis scores 26 on 22 FGA. Monta also averages 4.1 Turnovers to Roy’s 2.2. And while Monta does average slightly more points and assists(5.6 - 5.0) than Roy, Ellis plays almost 4 more MPG, and the Warriors play at a much higher pace than the Blazers. Also, Roy’s PER (Player Efficiency Rating) is 22.6, compared to Monta’s 17.1. I think the most telling stat would have to be Win Shares, where Roy has totalled 6.2 this season, and Ellis just 1.2. Finally, Roy was selected over Ellis by the coaches, not the fans, which clearly means he is the better player.

When fans pick starters and coaches pick reserves, there will always be players left off..who should play. It’s the fans fault. They vote highlight reel. I am terrified that so many basketball enthusiasts have left out such an “incrrredible player” that has been snubbed year in and year out while playing amazing minutes for the Lakers. Perhaps it is because of the “he is not as good as his Dad” labels he has unfairly been dealt with throughout his NBA career, his deal with LA Gear, or because he doesn’t necessarily “feel out a stat sheet”, but we all know that Luke Walton should have been an All Star reserve for 4-5 years in this league.
His 06-07 numbers: 11.4 PPG 5 Rpg, 4.3 Assists 1 steal (47% FG)

the man came to NBA on one leg at 32 and could always pull 20-10-3-2 when Portland needed him and unleashed him for over 30 min.
at 37, he still had a number of 20-30 pt games.
the man nearly won 6th man award as a rook, and was always in the talks about All Star game yet never made it.
on pure talent, he’s easily on top of this list. on NBA achievements, i think he should still make it.

Just look at this season; Billups goes down, the Nuggets start losing. Billups comes back, the Nuggets start winning. Ron Harper, for sure. In 88-89 he was 18.6ppg 5.0rpg 5.3apg 2.3spg .511fgp on a team that won 57 games. He lost out when they picked Mark Jackson (16.9ppg 4.7rpg 8.6apg 1.9spg .467fgp) rather than a fourth Cavalier.
Harper’s rookie year he went 22.9ppg 4.8rpg 4.8rpg 2.5spg .455fgp. Jeff Malone 22.0ppg 2.7rpg 3.7rpg .9spg .457 was for some reason picked ahead of him.
Harper was playing arguably the best basketball of his career (22ppg 6.9rpg 7.0apg 2.0spg .442fgp) When he was traded to the Clippers, where he played even better until his knee injury. Even though he was not the same player afterwards, he still had four straight seasons between 18-20.1ppg 4.8-6.1rpg 4.5-5.4apg 1.7-2.2spg. The most questionable All Star in that stretch was probably Dan Majerle in 1992 (17.3ppg 5.9rpg 3.3apg 1.6apg .478fgp). Sean Elliott had Harper in fgp in 1993, but other than that, Harper had better numbers across the board. And was just as good if not better than Sprewell in 1994.
Somehow, he was never that player that got picked, even as a replacement for injury. The guy went from being a 20ppg scorer for the Clippers to being the steady point guard for five championship teams, reeling in his game to be a part of winners, yet coaches never voted him onto a squad.
He certainly deserves to be on this list more than a token player like Cervi, more notable as a player coach (although his title came as coach only), since his playing days were barely on the edge of the early NBA.
somone said Rodman? He made two All Star games.

re: Andre Miller’s 2001/2002 season: 16-5-10.9
You can blame the voting system for not differentiating between guard positions, an argument that still exists today.
That all-star team had only 2 PG’s chosen, Kidd and Baron Davis
You can argue against B-Diddy, but he had his Hornets in the playoffs, while the Cav’s finished 29-53, second last in the Eastern Conference. Fact is, Andre MIller was not better than the other guards voted onto the team.
Jason Kidd 15-7-10
Baron Davis 18-4-8
Ray Allen 22-4-3
Vince Carter 24-5-4
Allen Iverson 26-4-4
Tracy McGrady 26-8-5
Paul Pierce 26-7-3
Michael Jordan 23-6-5 (was voted as a forward on this team)
mawbsta Said,

as for Rod Strickland not being on the team… he was certainly a good point guard, but as I recall he wasn’t very well liked, which is suicide at the voting stalls. He was aloof, distant and rubbed teammates and the media the wrong way, and fans pick up on that negativity.
As it was he was playing in Portland where Stockton and Payton were in their primes and Kidd was making a lot of noise from the jump. Hard to argue against those guys to start with, and perennial choices like Mitch Richmond, sentimental favorites like Clyde Drexler and flavor of the month Eddie Jones and Nick the quick’s are always going to get noticed. When he moved back to the East, he had to compete with Tim and Penny Hardaway, fan favorites Terrell Brandon, Joe Dumars, Reggie Miller and a guy named Michael.
He was good, but not that good.
mawbsta Said,

Sam Perkins = not an all-star
I don’t recall if he was listed as an F or a C on the ballot, but it wouldn’t have mattered because he played in an era where Kareem, Hakeem, Robinson, Malone, Worthy, Chambers, Ellis, Mullins and English were scoring twice as much as he was. There was no room for him to backup C or F on any of these teams.
Okay… fair enough he can sub in for Mark Eaton or Kevin Duckworth in 89, but so could Otis Thorpe or AC green
Al Cervi??? AL CERVI??… Al Cervi (yes I said it thrice) played 4 NBA seasons averaging 9ppg 3ast… even in the 50’s that was hella-low. This is an ‘all-time SNUB list’ so you can’t be snubbed if the game didn’t exist. Stick to the point of the article. To be considered an ALL-TIME SNUB, it is assumed that you would be consistently snubbed, a la Byron Scott or at least have even an inexplicable explanation for being left off…
Josh Smith. 15ppg 8.4reb 3.2ast 1.5stl 2.2blk and anchoring Atlanta to the 2nd best record in the East, yet somehow the coaches pick teammate Al Horford???? that’s the definition of an inexplicable choice.

With a little research, here is the list I have compiled.
Honorable mentions: Toni Kukoc, Donyell Marshall, Derek Anderson.
Zach Randolph and Gerald Wallace would have been worthy of this list had they not been selected this year. With apologies to David Lee, Jamal Crawford and Chris Kaman who has been snubbed once or twice, here is the comprehensive list of ALL-TIME Snubs, including some names already listed above (hey, I didn’t say I disagreed with the whole list.)
10. Eddie Johnson (damn that john drew)
9. Andre Iguodala
8. Josh Smith
7. Mike Bibby
6. Sam Perkins
5. Byron Scott
4. Lamar Odom
3. Andre Miller
2. Marcus Camby
1. Rod Strickland
Maybe I am favoring the modern era, but when names like Al Cervi get mentioned, it’s time to rethink the list and dig deeper for some players that fans have actually watched, appreciated and most importantly, heard of!

ummmm….can anyone confirm that Cherokee Parks and Chris Kaman aren’t the same player….I mean, have you ever seen them together, or in the same place at the same time….think about it…

Great list Jeff, but it would be a crime not to mention the guy who Shaq (according to Shaq himself) got his signature dunk from, Rony Seikaly. He averaged at least 16 pts and 10 reb for 5 straight years and has careers averages of 14.7ppg and 9.5rpg. That along with numerouse 20-20 and 30-20 games.

P.S. Love the Pavel Podkolzin reference. Remember the hype around him?

when pavel podkolzin made a real block in a game and stared at his hand with utter amazement was an all-star moment for me

Andre Miller’s a very good player, but he only played at an all-star level that one year on Cleveland.
Also, the guy who said Luke Walton should be an all-star: that’s ridiculous. 11-5-4 on a borderline playoff team would not be enough even if you play shutdown d. Luke Walton is a huge liability on the defensive end. If you’re going to make the argument that role players should get all-star nods, Walton would be far down on the list. Shane Battier is 10 times the player Walton is.

Purvis Short- averaged 28 ppg in ‘85 and 25 in ‘86.
Kevin Porter- led the league in assists 4 times. Only player besides Stockton, Isiah and Magic to average over 13 apg.
The ex-Illini team
Eddie J.
Derek Harper
Nick Anderson
Kendall Gill
Deron Williams (until last week)

Better known as an ABA/NBA coach in the 70s and 80s, Kevin Loughery was also a trivia question as a player - he averaged 20 points a game in two different seasons without making the All Star team.

I don’t have any additions to the list, although I do agree with Harper. That year when the Knicks made the finals, there was talk of Harper being Finals MVP had the Knicks won. Anyways, I just wanted to throw into this conversation something that I believe Kenny Smith said, there should be two roster spots on each All-Star team that are voted on by the players.
